Subaru’s truck history is not one continuous pickup line. It includes the Japan-market Sambar kei truck, the North America-oriented BRAT built from Leone 4WD foundations, and the Legacy/Outback-based Baja crossover pickup. Subaru still lists a Sambar Truck in Japan, but the official material reviewed does not announce a new BRAT, Baja, or other future Subaru pickup.
Did Subaru ever make a pickup truck?
Yes—but the answer depends on the market and what you mean by “truck.” Subaru’s Sambar is a compact Japanese kei truck. The BRAT and Baja were North America-oriented vehicles with passenger-car roots and open cargo beds. They are distinct designs, not successive generations of one pickup model.
| Model | Era | Market | Vehicle basis and layout | Drivetrain | Intended role | Current availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sambar Truck | Debuted February 1961 | Japan | Subaru 360-based kei truck with a low deck and cargo bed | Current Subaru Japan listings include 2WD and 4WD configurations | Small-scale utility suited to narrow streets | Listed by Subaru Japan; the March 2026 update release identifies Daihatsu as OEM supplier |
| BRAT | Introduced in 1977 | Designed as an export recreational vehicle for North America | Leone 4WD-based vehicle with a two-seat cabin and cargo bed behind | Based on the Leone 4WD | Passenger-vehicle character combined with open-bed utility | Not listed as a current model in the official sources reviewed |
| Baja | Announced in 2002 as a 2003 model | North America | Legacy/Outback-based four-door crossover pickup | Legacy/Outback AWD system | Passenger-car comfort and driving dynamics with pickup-style utility | Not listed as a current model in the official sources reviewed |

What is the Subaru Sambar Truck?
The Sambar is Subaru’s small Japanese truck, first introduced in February 1961. Subaru says it was based on the Subaru 360 and emphasizes its low deck, roomy cargo bed, stability, and ability to navigate narrow streets. Its purpose and scale set it apart from the larger passenger-car-derived BRAT and Baja.

Today’s Sambar is a Japan-market kei truck
Subaru Japan currently lists the Sambar Truck with gasoline trims and combinations of 2WD or 4WD and manual transmission or CVT. The specification page lists a standard bed floor length of 2,030 mm, width of 1,410 mm, and height of 285 mm; the Grand Cab’s bed floor length is 1,990 mm. These measurements describe the listed configurations, not a claim that every Sambar trim has identical bed dimensions. See the [current specifications] for trim-specific details.
Subaru-badged, Daihatsu-supplied
In its March 26, 2026 update announcement, Subaru said the Sambar Truck is supplied by Daihatsu as an OEM vehicle. The update expanded Smart Assist detection functions, including detection of crossing bicycles and certain scenarios involving opposing traffic and pedestrians. This makes the current Sambar a Subaru-badged truck sold in Japan; it does not establish that Subaru has resumed manufacturing its own kei truck or that the model is sold in North America. See [Subaru’s March 2026 announcement].

What was the Subaru BRAT?
Subaru introduced the BRAT in 1977 as an export recreational vehicle designed for North America. Subaru’s heritage account describes it as based on the Leone 4WD, with two seats in the cabin and a cargo bed behind. That combination—passenger-vehicle cabin and open bed—is the essential distinction of the BRAT. It was not simply a Sambar adapted for a different market.
Subaru’s [official heritage timeline] documents the BRAT’s market focus and basic layout. Those facts are enough to identify its role without assuming additional motives or specifications that the source does not establish.

What was the Subaru Baja?
The Baja took a different approach: it blended a four-door passenger vehicle with pickup form. Subaru announced it for North America in January 2002, after showing the ST-X concept in Los Angeles in January 2000. The launch release said the Baja was based on the Legacy/Outback platform and AWD system and specified a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder SOHC engine. Subaru planned dealership arrival in fall 2002 as a 2003 model.
Subaru described it as “a new breed of crossover vehicle that blends the feeling of freedom and ruggedness of a compact four-door pickup truck with the driving dynamics, safety, and comfort of a passenger car.” The launch description captures why the Baja is best understood as a crossover pickup, rather than as a conventional truck or a direct continuation of the BRAT. Details are in Subaru’s [January 8, 2002 launch release].

Is the Subaru Baja coming back?
There is no announced Baja revival in the official sources reviewed. They establish a current Sambar Truck listing in Japan and its March 2026 update, but do not establish a new BRAT, Baja, or other Subaru pickup planned for future release. Enthusiast speculation, renderings, and rumors are not the same as a Subaru announcement. Broader product or electrification plans likewise do not, on their own, confirm a pickup program. Subaru’s [newsroom] is the place to check for a future official announcement.
Does Subaru still make a small truck?
Subaru Japan lists the Sambar Truck, including 2WD and 4WD versions, and Subaru announced an update on March 26, 2026. Its market is Japan; the listing is not evidence of current North American sales. For exact engine, trim, transmission, and bed details, consult Subaru Japan’s [Sambar Truck page] and [specification page].
