The 20 Weirdest Pickup Trucks Ever Made

A pickup can be a wagon with a bed, a convertible, or a truck with a ramp built into its side. These 20 unusual examples show just how broad the idea can get.

Pickup-truck weirdness is not just unusual styling. It can mean a side that turns into a loading ramp, a wagon converted into a tiny truck, a convertible roof, or a cabin that opens into the bed. This list uses those distinctive body layouts, cargo solutions, donor vehicles, and role combinations as its criteria—not a claim of objectively ranked oddness. The examples draw on MotorTrend’s collection of unusual production trucks and Gadget Review’s candidate list; neither establishes a definitive top twenty.

20 unusual pickups, and what made each one different

The order below is editorial, not a universal ranking. Some trucks are strange because their cargo access is ingenious; others look unlikely, borrow passenger-car hardware, or combine pickup utility with a very different vehicle role. Production totals are included only where the cited account provides them, and should be read as reported figures rather than a complete factory-record audit.

  1. 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside: a loading ramp in the side

A hinged panel in the side of the Corvair Rampside folded down to create a ramp, making it easier to load cargo at bed height. Chevrolet also offered the Loadside, which lacked that side-loading arrangement. MotorTrend reports that Chevrolet sold 17,786 Rampsides and 2,844 Loadside trucks from 1961 through 1964. The unusual feature was more than a styling flourish: it changed how a person could move a bulky load into the bed. Source: MotorTrend.

  2. 1978 Subaru BRAT: rear-facing seats in the bed

Derived from the GL wagon, the BRAT placed two rear-facing seats in the cargo bed. That gave passengers an unconventional, exposed place to ride while preserving the basic shape of a compact pickup. MotorTrend connects the layout to tariff considerations, but that explanation is best treated as a reported account rather than a settled policy history without a primary source. Source: MotorTrend.

  3. 1978 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup: a car-based, front-wheel-drive truck

The Rabbit Pickup took a compact passenger-car starting point and gave it a bed nearly five and a half feet long. MotorTrend reports an 1,100-pound payload capacity and an optional diesel. Its front-wheel-drive, car-based layout challenged the conventional expectation that a pickup needed rear-wheel drive or a body-on-frame chassis. Source: MotorTrend.

  4. 1982 Dodge Rampage: a compact pickup from a passenger-car platform

The Rampage brought the small front-wheel-drive pickup idea to Dodge’s lineup. Its car-derived architecture set it apart from the larger, more conventional trucks buyers might picture first. The unusual part was not a single trick panel or special seat, but the decision to adapt passenger-car packaging to pickup work. Source: MotorTrend.

  5. 1983 Plymouth Scamp: the Rampage idea with a one-year run

Plymouth offered its own version of the compact, front-wheel-drive car-based pickup as the Scamp. MotorTrend says it lasted one model year, making it an especially brief variation on the concept. It belongs here both for its unusual architecture and its short-lived place in the lineup. Source: MotorTrend.

  6. 1989 Dodge Dakota Convertible: a pickup with a manually operated soft top

Dodge sent Dakota Sport models to American Sunroof Company for a roll bar and manually operated convertible top. The result kept a pickup bed but made the cab open-air. MotorTrend reports sales of just under 3,000 in 1989, just over 900 in 1990, and nine in 1991. Those are figures reported by that 2025 account, not a fresh review of Dodge’s underlying sales records. 7. 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche: the cabin could become part of the cargo area

The Avalanche’s fold-down Midgate opened a path from the bed into the cabin. With the rear seats folded and the Midgate lowered, the usable load space could extend forward. The trade-off was direct: expanding the load path meant opening the passenger compartment to the elements. Source: MotorTrend.

  8. 2002 Subaru Baja: a wagon that could open into its bed

Based on the Outback, the Baja blended a passenger wagon and a small pickup. A removable Switchback panel connected the bed with the cabin, allowing long items to pass forward when needed. It shares the wagon-to-pickup premise of the BRAT, but passengers remained inside the enclosed cabin rather than sitting in exposed, rear-facing bed seats. MotorTrend reports about 30,000 Bajas produced before the model ended after 2006; that is an attributed approximate figure. Source: MotorTrend.

  9. 2003 Chevrolet SSR: a retro roadster with a pickup bed

The SSR combined a retro-inspired roadster appearance with pickup proportions and a retractable hardtop. That roof made it unusual even among specialty trucks: its open-air character came from a powered hardtop arrangement, not the Dakota’s manually operated convertible top. MotorTrend describes the early version as using a 5.3-liter V8 and notes a powertrain update for 2005. Exact specifications and performance claims are not detailed here because the cited editorial account is not a substitute for primary GM documentation. Source: MotorTrend.

  10. 2006 SsangYong Actyon Sports: a pickup with conspicuous styling

Based on the Actyon, the Actyon Sports stands out for a visual treatment that departs from the familiar boxy pickup formula. That is an aesthetic judgment, not an objective engineering defect: the unusualness lies in its distinctive shape and passenger-vehicle-derived design. Source: MotorTrend.

  11. 2024 Tesla Cybertruck: angular form and steer-by-wire

The Cybertruck brought an exceptionally angular design and stainless-steel exterior panels to the modern electric-pickup market. MotorTrend also identifies steer-by-wire among its unusual features. This is a design-era example rather than a settled judgment about long-term ownership or reliability; current specifications, feature status, recalls, and availability can change and should be checked against Tesla and regulator information before making a buying decision. 12. GMC Sierra Classic Gentleman Jim: a special-edition name that raises the eyebrows

Gadget Review includes the Gentleman Jim among its unusual pickup candidates. Its place on this list rests on the distinction of a named special edition rather than a documented mechanical oddity. The article flags uncertainty around some special-edition production counts, so no total is presented here. Source: Gadget Review.

  13. Ford Sky Ranger: a niche special-edition pickup

The Sky Ranger appears in Gadget Review’s list of distinctive pickups. It is an example of how a limited-edition treatment can make a familiar truck unusual, even when a reliable production total is not established by the cited account. Source: Gadget Review.

  14. Dodge Ram Rod Hall Signature Edition: a truck tied to a named off-road identity

Gadget Review includes the Rod Hall Signature Edition among its unusual variants. Its distinction is its specialized identity within the Ram line, rather than a cargo-access feature like the Rampside or Midgate. The cited list does not provide a verified production figure for use here. Source: Gadget Review.

  15. Ford F-150 Night Edition: a distinctive treatment of a mainstream truck

The Night Edition is one of the special treatments named by Gadget Review. It belongs on a list like this because unusual pickups are not limited to radical body engineering: a memorable trim identity can also set a truck apart. No confirmed production total is asserted. Source: Gadget Review.

  16. Dodge Midnight Express: a special edition with a dramatic name

Gadget Review names the Midnight Express among its unusual Dodge pickups. The edition’s distinction is its special-edition character; the cited account does not establish a dependable production count, so none is repeated here. Source: Gadget Review.

  17. GMC California Sundancer: a regionally styled special edition

The California Sundancer is another variant in Gadget Review’s candidate inventory. Its name and special-edition status give it an unusual place in pickup history, but the cited source does not establish a production figure suitable to present as fact. Source: Gadget Review.

  18. Chevrolet K10 Snow Chaser: a truck presented for a specific setting

Gadget Review includes the K10 Snow Chaser among its special-edition examples. The name signals a distinct, setting-specific identity, contrasting with trucks whose oddity comes from a convertible roof or an opening between cab and bed. No verified count is given here. Source: Gadget Review.

  19. GMC Sierra Indy 500: pickup meets event-branded edition

The Sierra Indy 500 is included in Gadget Review’s list of special-edition trucks. It represents a different kind of unusualness: an event-linked identity applied to a production pickup, rather than a different basic body layout. The source does not establish a verified production total for this article to quote. Source: Gadget Review.

  20. Dodge D100 Spirit of ’76: a commemorative edition

Gadget Review’s candidate list includes the Spirit of ’76 D100, a commemorative-style special edition. It rounds out the twenty with a reminder that truck oddities can reflect a particular moment or theme as much as a mechanical experiment. A confirmed production count is not asserted. Source: Gadget Review.

Why these trucks count as weird

The strongest examples alter what a pickup can do or how it is packaged. The Rampside changed the loading route with a hinged side ramp; the Avalanche and Baja created ways to extend cargo into the cabin; and the BRAT put rear-facing seats in the bed. The Rabbit Pickup, Rampage, Scamp, and Baja also show how passenger-car or wagon platforms could be reworked into pickups. By contrast, the Dakota Convertible and SSR made open-air motoring part of the truck concept, while the special editions stand out primarily through their limited or distinctive identity.

That variety is why the order should not be mistaken for a measurable ranking. The candidate lists are useful starting points, but counts for several editions are disputed, estimated, or unverified in Gadget Review’s account. Where a production figure matters, it should be checked against manufacturer records rather than repeated as settled fact.
