The 12 Best V12 Engines Ever Made

The best V12 engines are not defined by horsepower alone. These 12 standouts span marque-defining road cars, F1 and endurance racing, luxury refinement and railway service.

There is no objective winner among the best V12 engines ever made: a Formula One engine, a luxury-car V12 and a 79-litre railway diesel answer very different engineering questions. This selection weighs historical influence, competition success, engineering distinction, longevity, range of applications and character—not peak power alone. The entries are grouped by what makes each engine remarkable, rather than presented as a universal ranking.

What makes a V12 one of the best?

“Best” depends on the job. For this list, a strong case can come from defining a marque, winning at the highest level of competition, remaining adaptable across generations, reaching an exceptional engineering milestone, or serving a role that a smaller, more conventional engine could not fill. Output figures matter, but only when tied to the particular engine version and vehicle.

The list includes road cars, racing engines and one railway diesel. That broad scope is deliberate: V12 architecture has served far more than high-performance cars. Where a claim comes from a manufacturer or an automotive publication, it is attributed; those sources’ specifications and judgments should not be mistaken for a common, independent test.

V12s that defined road-car lineages

1. Ferrari Colombo V12

Why it belongs: The Colombo 3.0 is a defining Ferrari powerplant of the 1960s, according to Top Gear. Its place here rests on historical influence and its association with Ferrari’s identity, not a claim that it beats later V12s on output. Top Gear also praises its sound, a subjective judgment rather than a measurable engineering advantage.

2. Lamborghini Bizzarrini V12

Why it belongs: Its exceptional strength is a long, adaptable lineage. Goodwood traces the engine, designed by Giotto Bizzarrini, from its debut in the 350 GT through the Miura, Countach, Diablo and Murciélago.

Goodwood reports 284PS from 3.5 litres in the 350 GT, then 350PS from a 3.9-litre version in the Miura by 1966. In the 2010 Murciélago LP670-4 Super Veloce, the lineage reached a 6.5-litre, 670PS version. Those figures belong to different models and stages of development; the enduring achievement is the engine family’s evolution, not a like-for-like output comparison.

3. Aston Martin’s V12 lineage

Why it belongs: Aston Martin’s V12 story spans distinct generations and models, making it a notable road-car lineage rather than one unchanged engine specification. The company dates the DB7 Vantage V12’s launch to 1999. It says the Vanquish version reached 460bhp in 2001 and the Vantage S version 520bhp. Later, Aston describes the DBS Superleggera as using a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 and the DBS 770 Ultimate as having a 750bhp version. These are manufacturer-reported figures for particular models.

4. Mercedes-Benz M120

Why it belongs: The M120 moved among markedly different kinds of cars. Top Gear says Mercedes developed it for the S-Class in the early 1990s; larger 7.1- and 7.3-litre AMG forms followed, and the engine later appeared in the CLK GTR and Pagani Zonda. Goodwood also points to its longevity and motorsport pedigree. That breadth—from luxury car to competition and supercar applications—is its central distinction. The specific development history and sizes here are reported by those publications, not independently verified Mercedes technical specifications.

5. Rolls-Royce N74B68

Why it belongs: It represents a different V12 ideal: quiet, effortless luxury rather than a high-revving sports-car experience. Top Gear identifies the N74B68 as a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 used in the Phantom and reports 664lb-ft. The magazine also reports a 60dB reading at 70mph; that figure is a publication-reported observation, not a general sound-level specification for every Phantom or driving condition.

V12s with a competition legacy

6. BMW S70/2

Why it belongs: The S70/2 connected a road-going V12 to a remarkable competition story through the McLaren F1 and related racing derivatives. Goodwood describes the McLaren F1 engine as a 6.1-litre unit producing 618PS with a 7,500rpm redline. Top Gear instead gives 627bhp for the Paul Rosche-designed engine developed specifically for the F1. These are the publications’ respective figures and units; they should not be collapsed into a single supposedly exact output.

BMW Group’s 1999 historical release reports that the McLaren F1 won Le Mans in 1995 and that the BMW V12 LMR won the Sebring 12-Hour. These results give the S70/2 story a competition dimension well beyond an impressive road-car specification.

7. Honda RA121E

Why it belongs: Top Gear identifies the RA121E as the V12 in the McLaren MP4/6 driven by Ayrton Senna in 1991, and calls it the only V12 ever to win an F1 title. That makes it a standout for motorsport achievement. The distinction is Top Gear’s; without a Honda technical history here, a more detailed account of its construction or output would go beyond the available evidence.

8. Ferrari F140 and its racing derivatives

Why it belongs: The F140 family has continued across Ferrari road cars and competition applications. Goodwood says the 65-degree V12 began in the Enzo in 2002, where it produced 660PS, and notes that the MC12 GT1 won constructors’ titles in 2005 and 2007.

The family’s later road-car versions illustrate how much specifications can vary within a name. Ferrari reported 800cv at 8,500rpm for the 6.5-litre 812 Superfast V12 in its 2017 announcement. Goodwood reported 840PS at up to 9,250rpm for the Daytona SP3’s F140HC in 2022. Those are model-specific manufacturer and publication figures, respectively—not proof that one version is categorically better.

V12s that push engineering in different directions

9. Cosworth RA for the Aston Martin Valkyrie

Why it belongs: The Valkyrie’s naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 is notable for combining a 6.5-litre capacity with an unusually high rev ceiling. Goodwood reports output above 1,000PS and revs beyond 11,000rpm; Top Gear’s September 2026 roundup gives a redline of 11,100rpm. These are publication-reported claims for the Valkyrie engine, not figures for every Aston Martin V12. Aston Martin’s separate history page gives 835PS for a later V12 flagship, but does not clearly tie that figure in the supplied description to a named model, so it cannot be used as a direct comparison here.

10. Cosworth GMA V12

Why it belongs: The Cosworth-built engine for Gordon Murray Automotive’s T.50 and T.33 stands out for its rev ceiling. Goodwood describes it as a 3.9-litre V12 reaching 12,100rpm, a figure Top Gear repeated in its September 2026 roundup. Both publications contrast it with the larger, lower-revving Valkyrie engine. A high rev limit is a notable engineering distinction, not a complete measure of an engine’s overall quality.

11. BMW’s 5.4-litre V12

Why it belongs: BMW’s 1999 account gives this V12 a different kind of distinction: production reach. BMW Group reported that more than 90,000 BMW V-12s had left its Dingolfing plant by the end of 1998—roughly 23,000 for 8 Series coupes and 68,000 for two generations of 7 Series sedans. The release says its 5.4-litre V12 produced 326 horsepower and 361lb-ft at 3,900rpm after a 1995 increase from 300 horsepower. This is a separate road-car achievement from the S70/2’s McLaren and racing story; the two should not be confused.

A V12 beyond the car world

12. Paxman Valenta

Why it belongs: The Valenta makes the list’s broad interpretation explicit. Top Gear describes it as a 79-litre V12 diesel used in the InterCity 125 and other heavy-duty applications, and says it set a diesel train speed record in 1987. Its scale and railway role are a striking counterpoint to compact, high-revving road and racing engines. The record claim comes from an automotive publication; it is not independently established here by a rail-industry source.

Which V12 is best for which measure?

  • Historical Ferrari identity: the Colombo V12 is the defining 1960s example in Top Gear’s account.
  • Longevity and adaptation across flagships: the Lamborghini Bizzarrini lineage has a particularly strong case, from the 350 GT to the Murciélago.
  • Road-car and competition crossover: the BMW S70/2 stands out through the McLaren F1 and the results reported for related racing cars.
  • F1 championship distinction: Top Gear singles out Honda’s RA121E as the only V12 to win an F1 title.
  • High-rev engineering: the GMA V12’s reported 12,100rpm ceiling is a standout, while the Valkyrie Cosworth offers a different combination of capacity, output and revs.
  • Luxury refinement: the Rolls-Royce N74B68 represents the V12 as a quiet, torque-rich engine rather than a track-focused one.
  • Scale beyond passenger cars: the Paxman Valenta demonstrates how far V12 applications extend into heavy-duty rail service.

No one entry dominates all of those measures. The answer changes with the question: influence, race results, refinement, production reach, rev ceiling or sheer breadth of application.
