The car behind the headlines is Trans Am Worldwide’s limited-production 70/SS, a modern, Camaro-based tribute to the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport. During the program’s development, a supercharged 427 package was reported at approximately 1,000 horsepower. Trans Am Worldwide’s current homepage separately advertises that package at 1,100 streetable rear-wheel horsepower and limits it to 20 cars.
That is not necessarily the same configuration as the company’s current flagship. Trans Am Worldwide’s detailed model page now emphasizes the 454 LS6X lineup, including a 1,000-rwhp twin-turbo version and a 1,500-rwhp twin-turbo version. The 427, the 454 LS6X, and the original 1970 Chevelle’s engine options should not be treated as interchangeable.
The short version
| Question | Accurate answer |
|---|---|
| Who built it? | Trans Am Worldwide of Tallahassee, Florida—not Chevrolet or General Motors. |
| What is it? | A modern 70/SS Chevelle tribute with retro bodywork and a current performance-car platform. |
| What inspired it? | The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, particularly the 454 LS6 era. |
| What was the 427 claim? | An earlier or alternate supercharged 427 package reported at about 1,000 hp and later advertised by Trans Am Worldwide at 1,100 rwhp. |
| What is the current flagship? | The 454 LS6X family, with published outputs from 900 to 1,500 rwhp. |
| Is it a Chevrolet production model? | No. It is built and sold by Trans Am Worldwide. |
SEMA’s launch report identified Trans Am Worldwide as the producer and described the 70/SS as a modern-day version of the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. The public release was announced for May 14, 2022, with a reported starting price of $150,000.
What the 427 engine package actually was
The 427 was a performance package associated with the 70/SS program, not a Chevrolet engine option for a new 2024 Chevelle. Launch-era coverage described a 427-cubic-inch supercharged engine producing approximately 1,000 horsepower. Trans Am Worldwide’s current homepage uses a different and more specific description: a 427 supercharged package producing 1,100 streetable rear-wheel horsepower, with production limited to 20 units.

Those claims establish that a 427 configuration was publicly promoted. They do not establish that every 70/SS carrying a “1,000-hp” label used the same engine, tune, fuel, dyno procedure, or horsepower measurement. The company’s detailed current-model page instead presents the 454 LS6X as the top limited-edition family, including a 1,000-rwhp twin-turbo option.
The safest description is therefore: the 427 was an earlier or alternate 70/SS configuration, while the current published lineup centers on 396 and 454 LS6X packages.
What has not been publicly verified
Trans Am Worldwide’s public pages do not provide enough technical information to treat the following as settled specifications for every 427 car:
- Block casting and internal components
- Bore, stroke, and compression ratio
- Supercharger make and model
- Boost pressure and torque output
- Fuel requirement, including whether a particular tune needs E85 or race fuel
- Dyno type, correction factor, and test conditions
- Whether the original 1,000-hp claim referred to crank horsepower or rear-wheel horsepower
- Transmission and clutch specifications for every 427 build
- The exact number of completed 427 cars
- Federal and state emissions certification for each engine combination
A buyer should request a build sheet and dyno documentation rather than assuming that a headline number describes every car in the series.
Why the horsepower figures do not line up
There are three likely reasons the 70/SS figures appear inconsistent.
- Different engines: A 427 supercharged car and a 454 LS6X twin-turbo car are different configurations. A 1,000-hp 427 should not automatically be identified as the 1,000-rwhp 454.
- Different measurement points: The current model page explicitly describes the 396 and 454 figures as rear-wheel horsepower. Horsepower measured at the wheels is not directly comparable with an engine’s crank or flywheel rating. Drivetrain losses vary, so there is no universally accurate conversion percentage.
- Program development: The lineup and website descriptions appear to have changed as the 70/SS evolved. SEMA’s 2022 announcement discussed a 1,500-plus-rwhp 454 LS6/X flagship, while the current homepage separately references the 427 package at 1,100 streetable rwhp.
In practical terms, a car making 1,000 rwhp is a substantially more demanding machine than one merely carrying a 1,000-hp crank rating. The two numbers should never be compared as if they were measured at the same point.
The current 70/SS engine lineup
Trans Am Worldwide’s current detailed product page lists three families: the base 70/SS, the 396 Heritage, and the 454 LS6X Limited Edition.

| Version | Published output | Induction | Measurement note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base LT1 | 450 hp | Naturally aspirated | The page does not clearly label this figure as rear-wheel horsepower. |
| LT1 upgrade | 675 hp | Supercharged | Company-published horsepower figure; measurement basis is not clearly identified on the table. |
| 396 Heritage | 800 rwhp | Supercharged | Rear-wheel horsepower. |
| 396 Heritage | 900 rwhp | Twin-turbocharged | Rear-wheel horsepower. |
| 454 LS6X | 900 rwhp | Supercharged | Rear-wheel horsepower. |
| 454 LS6X | 1,000 rwhp | Twin-turbocharged | Rear-wheel horsepower. |
| 454 LS6X | 1,500 rwhp | Twin-turbocharged | Rear-wheel horsepower. |
The table above comes from Trans Am Worldwide’s current model information. Its homepage separately lists the 427 at 1,100 streetable rwhp. That separate homepage claim should be preserved as a separate configuration instead of being blended into the 454 LS6X figures.

How the modern 70/SS relates to the original Chevelle
The visual connection is strongest with the 1970 Chevelle SS: the long hood, broad grille, cowl-induction styling, rally stripes, and big-block references are all deliberate. The mechanical history is more complicated.
The 1970 Chevelle was famous for the 454 LS6
The iconic high-performance 1970 Chevelle engine was the 454 LS6, historically rated by Chevrolet at 450 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. That is why the modern 454 LS6X name is a more direct historical reference to the 1970 SS than the modern 427 package.
The modern car’s base 450-hp claim may evoke the original LS6’s period rating, but the comparison needs context: the old rating and the modern company figures may not use identical testing standards, and the 70/SS base engine is part of a modern Camaro-related vehicle rather than a 1970 Chevelle drivetrain.
The 427 connection is more strongly associated with 1969
427-powered Chevelle history is most closely tied to the 1969 COPO and Yenko Chevelles, including cars equipped with the L72 427 rated at 425 hp. A 427 in the modern 70/SS therefore connects the car to Chevrolet’s broader big-block and COPO mythology, but it is not a direct recreation of the standard 1970 SS powertrain.
GM’s Heritage Collection also lists a 1970 Chevelle SS with a 427-cubic-inch LS7 rated at 505 hp. That is useful evidence that a 427-powered 1970 Chevelle exists in Chevrolet’s historical collection, but it should not be presented as proof that every production 1970 SS could be ordered with that engine. The GM Heritage listing and the history of the 1969 COPO 427 are separate pieces of the story.
What the 70/SS is built on
The 70/SS is not an original Chevelle chassis with a new engine. Automotive reporting, including Carscoops’ description, identifies the car as using sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro underpinnings. Trans Am Worldwide’s own current page describes the vehicle more generally as being built on a current modern platform rather than publishing a complete chassis specification.
That makes “Camaro-based modern continuation” a more accurate description than “new Chevelle.” It also means the car benefits from modern architecture while wearing a custom body and interior designed to resemble the classic Chevrolet.
Exterior and interior changes
According to Trans Am Worldwide, the 70/SS receives a full carbon-fiber body, a cowl-induction-style hood, rally stripes, multiple wheel choices, and a redesigned interior inspired by the 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. The interior includes retro-style seats and refaced gauges, and the company lists 20 available colors for the versions shown on its current model page.

These are build choices rather than equipment that should be assumed on every 70/SS.
A 2024 LSX Magazine development report also discussed a hardtop version and a version with metal chrome bumpers being developed for a planned SEMA appearance. That report describes development work, not standard equipment across the production run.
Is the 70/SS street legal?
Trans Am Worldwide and SEMA market the high-output 70/SS versions as streetable or street-oriented. That does not automatically mean that every individual build is legal in every American state or suitable for registration under every emissions regime.
The public product pages do not establish the exact federal emissions certification, state-by-state registration status, fuel used for the advertised power, or whether every tune is legal in California and other emissions-controlled jurisdictions. A car can be described as “streetable” by its builder while still requiring careful title, inspection, emissions, insurance, and fuel verification by the buyer.
Before buying, confirm:
- How the donor vehicle identification number and title are handled
- Whether the completed car is registered as a modified vehicle, conversion, or another classification
- Which emissions equipment remains installed
- Whether the advertised output is available on ordinary pump gasoline
- Whether E85 or race fuel is required for the high-output tune
- Whether the insurer will cover the completed vehicle and its stated value
What 1,000-plus rear-wheel horsepower means in the real world
The headline power is only one part of the specification. The 1,000-rwhp and 1,500-rwhp versions place extreme demands on traction, cooling, fuel delivery, transmissions, axles, differentials, driveshafts, tires, and brakes. They may be streetable in the sense that they can be driven on public roads, but that does not make them easy daily drivers.
Rank #4
- 1970 CHEVROLET CHEVELLE OWNERS INSTRUCTION & OPERATING MANUAL - INCLUDES: Chevelle, El Camino, SS Super Sport models 70
Trans Am Worldwide says the 1,500-hp configuration receives upgraded suspension, axles, differential, and oversized brakes. That description should not be interpreted as confirmation that every 427 or 1,000-hp build uses identical hardware.
Potential ownership trade-offs include rapid tire wear, high fuel consumption, heat management challenges, driveline stress, and expensive service or replacement parts. The carbon-fiber body is visually distinctive, but repairs, paint matching, and replacement panels may cost more than they would for an ordinary mass-produced steel-bodied car.
Price and production limits
Pricing has changed with the program and depends heavily on engine, transmission, body options, interior trim, wheels, graphics, and carbon-fiber finish.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- $150,000: SEMA’s 2022 launch report gave this as the starting price.
- Approximately $195,000: Later reporting described base pricing around this level, but this should not be treated as a current official MSRP.
- Current pricing: Trans Am Worldwide’s for-sale page generally directs prospective buyers to contact the company rather than publishing a complete, fixed retail price list.
Rarity figures also apply to specific configurations:
- The company’s homepage says the 427 package is limited to 20 units.
- SEMA’s launch report and the current detailed model page describe the 454 LS6X as limited to 25 units.
- Carscoops reported 20 LS6X examples, which conflicts with the current detailed official page.
These numbers should not be combined into one universal production cap. The most defensible wording is that the 427 was advertised as a 20-car run, while the current 454 LS6X page says 25 units. Buyers should confirm the serial-number allocation directly with Trans Am Worldwide.

A 70/SS should be evaluated as a bespoke, limited-production build rather than as a normal Chevrolet with a published factory window sticker. Ask for the following in writing:
- Exact engine: Is the car a 427, 396, 454, or a replacement configuration? Is the displacement an actual engine specification or a package name?
- Dyno documentation: Does the figure represent crank horsepower or rear-wheel horsepower? What dyno, correction factor, fuel, temperature, and calibration were used?
- Street tune: Is the advertised number a pump-gas street tune, an E85 tune, or a race-fuel maximum?
- Transmission and driveline: Is it manual or automatic? What clutch, differential, axle, half-shafts, driveshaft, and transmission are installed? Does the warranty cover the stated output?
- Brakes and suspension: Which upgrades are included on that specific build, rather than merely available for the model family?
- VIN and title: How is the vehicle titled, and will the buyer’s state register and inspect it?
- Warranty and service: Who performs warranty work, and where can proprietary body, trim, and drivetrain parts be sourced?
- Production documentation: What is the build number, engine number, invoice date, and confirmed production limit for that exact package?
- Body repairs: Are replacement carbon-fiber panels available, and are repair procedures documented?
Verdict: a real 70/SS, but not a factory 2024 Chevelle
The 1,000-hp 427 story is not an invented Chevrolet press release. It belongs to Trans Am Worldwide’s evolving 70/SS tribute program, and the company still separately references a 427 supercharged package at 1,100 streetable rear-wheel horsepower with a 20-unit limit.

But calling it a “new 2024 Chevy Chevelle” is inaccurate. Chevrolet did not return the Chevelle to its production lineup. The car is a Trans Am Worldwide-built, Camaro-related continuation with carbon-fiber retro bodywork, modern hardware, and several engine families. The company’s current detailed lineup emphasizes the 396 Heritage and 454 LS6X, with the latter listed at up to 1,500 rwhp.
The most important distinction for collectors is the one between the 427 package and the 454 LS6X package. They represent different configurations, different historical references, and potentially different horsepower measurement methods. Anyone considering one should verify the exact build rather than relying on a headline number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2024 Chevelle 70/SS made by Chevrolet?
No. The 70/SS is built and sold by Trans Am Worldwide. It is a modern Chevelle-inspired tribute using modern Camaro-related underpinnings, not a General Motors production model.
Did the 70/SS really have a 1,000-hp 427 engine?
A supercharged 427 package was publicly associated with the 70/SS and reported at approximately 1,000 horsepower during the program’s development. Trans Am Worldwide’s current homepage describes a 427 package at 1,100 streetable rear-wheel horsepower and a 20-unit limit. The company’s current detailed model page focuses on the separate 454 LS6X lineup, so buyers should verify the exact configuration and dyno measurement.
Recommended Free Tools
Is the 1,000-hp figure crank horsepower or rear-wheel horsepower?
The available reports do not establish one measurement basis for every 427 car. Trans Am Worldwide explicitly labels its current 454 figures as rear-wheel horsepower, while launch-era coverage used broader horsepower language. A crank rating and a rear-wheel rating should not be compared directly.
How much does the 70/SS cost?
SEMA reported a $150,000 starting price in 2022. Later reporting placed base pricing around $195,000, while Trans Am Worldwide’s current sales pages generally require buyers to call for pricing. Final cost depends on the engine, transmission, body, interior, wheels, graphics, and other options.
How many 70/SS cars will be built?
The company’s homepage says the 427 package is limited to 20 units. The current detailed page says the 454 LS6X is limited to 25 units, while one secondary report cited 20 LS6X examples. These figures appear to refer to different or changing configurations, so a buyer should confirm the production allocation directly with Trans Am Worldwide.
Is the 1,500-hp 70/SS street legal?
Trans Am Worldwide and SEMA describe the high-output cars as streetable, but public information does not prove emissions and registration compliance in every jurisdiction. Buyers should verify the exact title, emissions equipment, fuel requirement, inspection rules, and insurance acceptance for the specific car.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 70/SS is a legitimate Trans Am Worldwide-built modern Chevelle tribute, not a new factory Chevrolet. The 427/1,000-hp claim belongs to an earlier or alternate package, while the company’s current published flagship is the 454 LS6X, offered at up to 1,500 rwhp. Verify the engine, dyno basis, fuel, title, warranty, and production number before treating any advertised specification as final.
