The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is confirmed for Sunday, August 23, 2026, as the inaugural NTT IndyCar Series street race around Washington, D.C.’s National Mall. The temporary seven-turn circuit is currently listed by IndyCar at approximately 1.7 miles, using Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, 7th Street, Independence Avenue and 3rd Street NW.
The race was initially planned for 125 laps, but an August 3 update expanded it to 147 laps and 249.9 miles—effectively a 250-mile IndyCar race. Saturday, August 22, will feature practice, qualifying, the return of IROC and other fan programming. This guide separates the original March layout announcement from the current race distance, ticket, schedule and traffic information. Last updated: August 10, 2026.

Official Freedom 250 track map

The map is the best reference for understanding the layout, but it is not a detailed corner guide. IndyCar has published the numbered seven-turn graphic without an official text description of every corner’s direction, radius or technical classification. Descriptions such as “hairpin,” “dogleg” or a precise apex direction should therefore be treated as map interpretation or secondary analysis, not as official corner names.

How a lap works
The released circuit is easier to understand as a sequence of street corridors than as a conventional permanent-race track. Cars circulate around a compact section of the National Mall, with the long Pennsylvania Avenue run contrasting sharply with the tighter section near the museums and government buildings.
- Start and finish on 3rd Street NW. The start-finish line is located on 3rd Street NW. The final part of the lap returns the cars to this section before they begin the next circuit.
- Turn onto Pennsylvania Avenue. From the 3rd Street portion, the course turns onto Pennsylvania Avenue NW. This is the circuit’s signature straight and the most visually recognizable racing section.
- The Pennsylvania Avenue frontstretch. The straight is approximately 0.4 mile long. Its length should give drivers time to build a draft before the next braking and turning sequence, although the actual passing picture will not be known until IndyCar runs on the completed course.
- The technical section near 9th Street. The lap moves into the tighter area around 9th Street, Constitution Avenue, the National Archives and the National Gallery of Art. This is the most confined-looking portion of the official map, with public-road geometry, barriers and nearby buildings leaving less room for correction than the open Pennsylvania Avenue section.
- Back toward 7th Street. The layout doubles back toward 7th Street and crosses the National Mall area. The official map shows the numbered turns and pedestrian bridges, but not a complete corner-by-corner engineering narrative.
- Independence Avenue. The circuit turns onto Independence Avenue near the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum before beginning the return leg.
- Return to 3rd Street. The final sequence brings the cars back toward 3rd Street NW and the start-finish line, completing the approximately 1.7-mile lap.
For a visual preview, IndyCar also published an official virtual lap of the Washington, D.C., circuit. It is useful for orientation, but the numbered course map remains the primary reference for the released layout.
What was revealed on March 9?
IndyCar and the event organizers formally revealed the temporary course, event logo and red-white-and-blue show car on March 9, 2026. The announcement established the basic layout: seven turns, an originally reported length of approximately 1.66 miles, a 0.4-mile Pennsylvania Avenue frontstretch, pit lane between Turns 1 and 2 and a start-finish line on 3rd Street NW.
It also presented the event as the first NTT IndyCar Series race on the National Mall and surrounding Washington streets. That wording is more precise than calling it the first motor race ever held anywhere in Washington, D.C.
Recommended Free Tools
The stated design priorities were fan access, views of national landmarks, safety and competitive racing. The setting is unusually prominent for a street course: the route is framed by the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, National Archives, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and the National Mall.
The original announcement is documented in IndyCar’s March 9 course and logo release.
1.66 miles or 1.7 miles? Both figures appear in the coverage
The apparent length discrepancy reflects different stages of event information rather than two separately published layouts.
- March announcement and contemporary reporting: approximately 1.66 miles.
- Current IndyCar schedule: approximately 1.7 miles.
- Current race distance: 147 laps and 249.9 miles.
The safest wording is: “The seven-turn circuit was announced at 1.66 miles and is currently rounded by IndyCar to 1.7 miles.” The exact surveyed or homologated length should not be presented as definitively 1.66 or 1.70 miles unless organizers publish a more precise measurement.

The organizer calls the event a 250-mile race; IndyCar lists the more precise total as 249.9 miles.
The major update: 125 laps became 147
Early coverage often repeated a 125-lap plan or described the race distance as undecided. That information is now outdated. On August 3, the organizer announced that the race would be expanded by 22 laps to create a roughly 250-mile event. IndyCar’s current schedule page confirms the final listing of 147 laps and 249.9 miles.
The change adds nearly 18 percent to the original lap count. The organizer said the longer distance is expected to require an additional pit stop, which could make fuel saving, tire management, caution timing and pit-lane execution more important. That is an organizer expectation, not a guarantee of the number of stops the teams will make once conditions, tire wear and cautions are known.

Landmarks along the course
The Freedom 250’s most distinctive feature is its setting. However, a landmark being promoted in event imagery does not mean every spectator can see it from every section of track.
| Landmark or area | Relationship to the course |
|---|---|
| U.S. Capitol | Primarily a prominent visual backdrop from portions of the circuit and spectator areas. |
| Washington Monument | A major skyline and National Mall backdrop, rather than a building directly beside every racing section. |
| National Archives | Immediately near the tighter section around Constitution Avenue and 9th Street. |
| National Gallery of Art | Near the course and the event’s paddock area. |
| Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Near the Independence Avenue portion of the circuit. |
| National Mall | The broader public-space setting crossed or bordered by several sections of the temporary course. |
Fencing, buildings, pedestrian bridges, grandstands and the short circuit layout will affect sightlines. Visitors should choose a spectator zone based on the section they most want to watch rather than assuming that the major landmarks will all be visible from one location.
Start-finish, pit lane, paddock and pedestrian bridges
- Start-finish: 3rd Street NW.
- Pit lane: Pennsylvania Avenue, between Turns 1 and 2.
- Paddock: The WillScot-presented paddock is shown in the event area near Constitution Avenue and the National Gallery of Art.
- Pedestrian bridges: The official map identifies several crossing points, including the NTT Bridge, F250GP Bridge, Bitdeer Bridge and Boeing Bridge, along with other accessible crossings.
- Mobility access: The organizer says the Bitdeer Bridge includes lift service for mobility-challenged guests.
The paddock is part of the event footprint, but that does not mean it is open to general-admission ticket holders. The ticket policy says no paddock or pit-lane passes are being offered because of space limitations.
The official track-activation and partner information includes additional details about bridge and event-area activations.

Is the Freedom 250 free to attend?
General admission is free, but the event is not unrestricted walk-up access. Fans needed a ticket for one of two designated zones, and the general-admission request window closed on June 7, 2026. The organizer currently says that no additional general-admission tickets are available.
Tickets are non-transferable and cannot be resold. A ticket for one zone does not provide access to the other, and all general-admission areas remain subject to venue capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- STARS: Outside the track, between 12th and 7th streets, south of Pennsylvania Avenue.
- STRIPES: Primarily inside the track between 7th and 3rd streets, and between Pennsylvania and Independence avenues.
Grandstands and viewing platforms are limited and first-come, first-served. General admission does not include paddock or pit-lane access. No paddock or pit passes are being offered because the available space is limited.
A separate paid hospitality option, the Champions Club, offers elevated views between Turns 4 and 5, climate-controlled facilities, food and beverages. Pricing and availability are volatile; check the organizer’s Champions Club update before making plans.

What can spectators bring?
The venue requires clear bags no larger than 12 × 6 × 12 inches. Medically necessary items and diaper bags are exceptions, but they are subject to inspection.
Among the prohibited items are:
- Non-clear bags and backpacks
- Coolers
- Alcohol and outside food
- Weapons and knives
- Aerosols, including bug spray and sunscreen
- Cameras with lenses longer than 10 inches
- Tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and GoPro or similar video devices
- Drones
- Bicycles, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades
- Chairs and large seating devices
Because the list can be updated and security screening may affect entry times, review the Freedom 250 gate regulations before leaving for the circuit. Metal detectors will be part of the security operation, according to reporting by the Associated Press.
D.C. road closures and parking restrictions
The biggest practical impact for Washington residents and visitors is the length of the buildout and removal period. The disruption is much longer than the roughly two-hour IndyCar race.
The updated Metropolitan Police Department traffic advisory says:
- Partial lane and curb-lane closures began during the buildout period.
- Emergency no-parking restrictions affect several course roads from July through early September.
- Major closures begin August 14.
- Additional full closures begin August 18.
- Race-weekend restrictions run from 3:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 23.
- Closures affect portions of Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, 7th Street, 9th Street, 12th Street, 3rd Street, Independence Avenue and Southwest access routes.
The MPD advisory warns that closure times are subject to change and that illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed and towed. The District’s official transportation-updates page directs travelers to current road closures, parking restrictions and travel information.
If you are traveling near race weekend, do not rely only on a static track diagram or an old news story. Check the live MPD advisory and District updates shortly before departure.
Why the layout could produce interesting racing
It is too early to call the circuit a guaranteed passing success, but the map presents a clear contrast between speed and precision.
- Pennsylvania Avenue should be the principal high-speed approach. At approximately 0.4 mile, it is the longest uninterrupted-looking section and the most plausible place for a draft to develop before a braking zone. That is an inference from the layout, not an official prediction of where overtakes will occur.
- The 9th Street and Archives section should reward precision. The tighter middle portion appears less forgiving than the long avenue section. Temporary walls and public-road geometry can punish a small mistake.
- The short lap magnifies traffic and caution effects. At approximately 1.7 miles, the field will circulate frequently, so the timing of yellow flags and pit stops could quickly reshuffle track position.
- The extra 22 laps increase the strategic importance. Moving from the original 125-lap plan to 147 laps makes fuel, tires and pit timing more consequential. The organizer expects the added distance to require an additional stop, but actual strategy will depend on race conditions.
Reports have circulated estimates of roughly 180–185 mph or nearly 200 mph on parts of the course. Those are estimates or attributed expectations, not official measured speeds or circuit records. The first running will establish the actual performance envelope.

A temporary IndyCar circuit through the National Mall requires considerably more preparation than simply closing a few lanes. The following figures come from Associated Press reporting and statements attributed to organizer Bud Denker; they should not be read as independently audited specifications.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- More than 220 manhole covers reportedly had to be welded or otherwise secured.
- Approximately 50 deeply recessed covers reportedly require silicone treatment to reduce bumps.
- Organizers are building approximately 1,800 trackside walls, each weighing about 10,000 pounds.
- About one-third of the track reportedly needs road improvement, with the organizer estimating the cost below $3 million.
- The event was planned around approximately 130,000 spectators per day.
- The organizer said it received 288,000 free-ticket requests. Requests are not the same as attendance.
- Metal detectors will be staffed as part of the security plan.
The race is expected to proceed in rain unless lightning or significant standing water creates unsafe conditions, according to the organizer’s stated operating expectations as reported by AP. That does not promise racing in every weather condition; spectators should check official event alerts for any delay or change.

How the race was authorized
The event was formalized through Executive Order 14381, signed January 30, 2026, and published in the Federal Register on February 4.
The order directed the secretaries of the Interior and Transportation to designate a suitable route through Washington, expedite permits and approvals, and coordinate with the District government. It should not be described as the document that supplied a complete final track design or guaranteed every operational detail. The detailed circuit, spectator arrangements, traffic plan and venue rules came through subsequent IndyCar, Freedom 250, District and MPD updates.
What remains unknown
The event is confirmed, but some details will only become clear as the first race approaches or after cars run on the completed course:

- Corner-by-corner characteristics: The official map labels seven turns but does not publish a full technical narrative naming each corner’s direction, radius or braking demands.
- Actual speeds and lap times: Reported speed figures are estimates, not achieved circuit records.
- Competitive outlook: The final entry list, qualifying order, tire behavior, passing opportunities and caution frequency cannot be known in advance.
- Future races: The Freedom 250 is an inaugural event connected to the 250th-anniversary celebration. AP reported that Bud Denker did not commit to a second Washington race, while Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed interest in future events. No 2027 continuation should be assumed.
Bottom line for fans and D.C. travelers
The Freedom 250 is no longer merely a proposed Washington street race. It is a confirmed August 2026 IndyCar event on a seven-turn, approximately 1.7-mile course that uses Pennsylvania Avenue, the National Mall area and several of the city’s most recognizable streets and landmarks.
The details most likely to cause confusion are now settled: the race is scheduled for Sunday, August 23; the current distance is 147 laps and 249.9 miles; and general admission is free but requires a zone-specific ticket. The details most likely to affect local travel are still dynamic: road closures, parking restrictions, security rules and access arrangements should be checked against the latest MPD advisory, District transportation updates, Freedom 250 information and IndyCar schedule before publication or travel.
Last updated: August 10, 2026. Race distance, ticket availability, road closures, schedule and venue policies may change. Verify current information with the official IndyCar, Freedom 250, District of Columbia and MPD pages.
