The list was based on warranty-issue data from 55,000 vehicles insured by Warranty Direct—not a survey of every car on UK roads, and not a guide to the most reliable cars today.
What the 2006 ranking measures
New Atlas published the Warranty Direct Top 100 Most Reliable Used Cars Of The Past Decade on 21 May 2006. Its “last decade” means the period before that publication, not the decade before today. New Atlas described the index as an independent comparison of failure frequency among 55,000 vehicles insured by Warranty Direct, a UK warranty provider.

That is a selected insured population, not necessarily representative of all UK cars, all vehicles of each model, or other countries. The article does not give the calculation formula, vehicle ages, mileage exposure, model-year breakdown, or uncertainty estimates. The ranks therefore show the published order within that dataset; they do not establish a specific failure probability or mean that any model is trouble-free.

How to use the list if you are buying a car now
Treat the ranking as a historical clue, not as a shortlist for a present-day purchase. A nameplate can cover different generations and configurations, and this list does not identify which ones its positions describe. For a specific car, compare evidence for its exact model year and configuration, then assess the individual vehicle.

- Look for current reliability information that identifies the model year and, where available, engine and transmission.
- Check service records, inspection results, mileage, and the car’s present condition. A model’s historical rank cannot reveal how a particular example was maintained.
- Use up-to-date local-market information for price, parts availability, and repair costs; the 2006 ranking does not cover those questions.
Consumer Reports offers a useful example of why dates and methods matter, not a confirmation of this ranking. Its reliability guide says its own scores run from 1 to 100 and are derived from member reports of vehicle problems, with problem severity weighted (Consumer Reports reliability guide). Its separate used-car analysis covers owner-reported problems in model years 2016–2021 (Consumer Reports analysis of long-term car reliability). Those sources use a different evidence base and cannot validate the 2006 order.
