There is no scientifically definitive list of the most reliable cars ever made. Reliability studies measure different things: some track owner-reported problems during the first few years, while others estimate how likely a vehicle is to reach very high mileage. A single exceptionally durable car can also demonstrate what is possible without proving that every example will perform the same way.
The models below combine long-term data, production history, documented durability, and real-world ownership evidence. They are not maintenance-free cars, and some are expensive to repair. Before buying any used vehicle, verify its specific year, engine, transmission, condition, and service history.

How to interpret this list
iSeeCars’ 2025 longevity study analyzed data from nearly 400 million vehicles and calculated the predicted probability of reaching at least 250,000 miles. That is a useful measure of long-term durability, but it is not a guarantee. J.D. Power’s 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study measured problems reported by original owners of 2022-model-year vehicles after three years, while Consumer Reports uses subscriber-reported problems to estimate predicted reliability, particularly for newer cars.

Those methods answer different questions. A new car can have a strong three-year reliability score without having decades of evidence behind it. Conversely, an older model can have a remarkable durability record while still requiring costly age-related repairs today.

1. Toyota Land Cruiser
The Toyota Land Cruiser belongs on any serious historical reliability list. Its lineage reaches back to the 1951 BJ, and Toyota reported selling its 10-millionth Land Cruiser in 2019. The model earned its reputation through conservative engineering, rugged construction, worldwide use in severe environments, and broad parts availability.
That reputation is sometimes misunderstood. A Land Cruiser is not cheap to own simply because it is durable. Four-wheel-drive hardware, suspension components, cooling systems, electronics, and body repairs can all be expensive. Rust is especially important on older examples. A well-maintained high-mileage Land Cruiser may be a better purchase than a neglected low-mileage one, but both deserve a professional inspection.
2. Toyota 4Runner
The 4Runner was second overall in iSeeCars’ 2025 longest-lasting-vehicles study. Its predicted probability of reaching at least 250,000 miles was 32.9%, compared with 4.8% for the average vehicle in the study.

Their body-on-frame design and relatively conservative mechanical layout suit owners who prioritize durability over fuel economy and car-like handling. Used buyers should inspect the frame carefully, particularly in states where road salt is used. Four-wheel-drive operation, suspension wear, leaks, and evidence of towing abuse also matter. A 4Runner can last a very long time, but replacing its aging truck components is not inexpensive.
3. Toyota Sequoia
The Sequoia ranked first in iSeeCars’ 2025 study, with a 39.1% predicted probability of reaching 250,000 miles—more than eight times the average vehicle’s probability in that analysis.
Its size brings a different ownership equation from a Corolla or Prius. Tires, brakes, fuel, suspension parts, and cooling-system repairs cost more, and towing can accelerate wear. When inspecting a used Sequoia, check the frame and body for rust, confirm that the four-wheel-drive system works, and look for cooling-system, timing-system, and towing-related maintenance. The longevity statistic makes the Sequoia a strong candidate; it does not make a neglected one a bargain.
4. Toyota Corolla
The Corolla demonstrates how a high-volume car can achieve durable ownership through mature, mass-produced mechanical systems. iSeeCars gave it a 3.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, above the 2.6% average for passenger cars in that study.

- Wide application: This socket wrench set is perfect for home improvement, carpentry tools, construction, auto repair, woodwork, and other DIY projects. This tool makes for a beautiful unique gift for men on various occasions like Father's Day, Birthday or anniversary.
That figure is lower than the percentages for several larger Toyota models because passenger cars and SUVs were analyzed in different groups. The Corolla remains appealing because it is generally inexpensive to service, widely supported by independent repair shops, and available with a long supply of used and aftermarket parts.
Do not treat every Corolla as interchangeable. A major redesign can introduce new engines, transmissions, electronics, or manufacturing issues. Research the specific model year, check for oil consumption or transmission complaints, and favor documented maintenance over a badge-based assumption of reliability.
5. Toyota Camry
The Camry has a long durability record and is particularly compelling in conventional four-cylinder form and among well-maintained hybrid versions. In iSeeCars’ 2025 study, the Camry had a 9.0% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, while the Camry Hybrid reached 10.2%.
The important qualification is that reliability can change after a redesign. Consumer Reports reported that the Camry’s predicted-reliability score fell to average after the 2025 redesign before improving in a subsequent survey. That is a reminder to avoid broad claims such as “all Camrys are bulletproof.”

6. Toyota Prius
The Prius has unusually strong long-term evidence for a hybrid. It recorded a 12.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles in iSeeCars’ 2025 passenger-car ranking, placing it third among passenger cars and third among the hybrid models analyzed.
That data does not support the common claim that a Prius battery normally fails at around 100,000 miles. Battery life depends on age, climate, mileage, cooling-system maintenance, and the condition of the individual vehicle. A high-mileage Prius should not automatically be rejected, but it should receive a hybrid-system inspection before purchase.

Also check the battery cooling intake, warning lights, brake operation, fluid leaks, and service records. A battery replacement can be a major expense, so obtain a repair estimate for the exact generation rather than relying on general internet averages.
7. Honda Civic
The Civic ranked fourth among passenger cars in iSeeCars’ 2025 study, with a 10.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. Its long production history, high sales volume, broad parts supply, and relatively simple mechanical layouts in many generations all work in its favor.
“Honda Civic” covers too many different vehicles to be a complete reliability assessment. Engine, transmission, year, body style, and trim can materially change the ownership experience. Performance versions and modified cars deserve extra scrutiny because hard use, tuning, and poor-quality parts can obscure the underlying model’s reputation.
During a pre-purchase inspection, look for accident repairs, oil consumption, neglected fluid changes, transmission hesitation, overheating, and suspension damage. A stock car with consistent records is generally a safer bet than a heavily modified example, even if the modified car has fewer miles.
8. Honda Accord
The Accord had an 8.8% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles in iSeeCars’ 2025 passenger-car study. It also tied the redesigned Camry with a Consumer Reports reliability score of 74 in the cited comparison, behind the Toyota Crown.
As with the Civic, the model name covers many different mechanical combinations. Some older V6 Accords use timing belts, so documented belt replacement is an important purchasing requirement. Certain older automatic-transmission generations also warrant closer research and a careful road test.
Check for smooth gear changes, engine leaks, overheating, warning lights, suspension noise, and evidence of skipped maintenance. A good Accord can be durable and practical, but the exact engine, transmission, and model year matter more than the emblem on the trunk.

9. Lexus LS 430
The 2001–2006 Lexus LS 430 combines Toyota-developed mechanical durability with conservative engineering and a mature luxury-car design. iSeeCars estimates an average usable lifespan of 136,203 miles and a 15.9% chance of reaching 200,000 miles.
The LS 430’s weakness is not necessarily its core engine or transmission; it is the number of expensive systems attached to an aging luxury car. Air suspension components, electronic accessories, window regulators, cooling-system parts, rubber seals, and interior mechanisms can fail with age. Applicable V8 versions also require timing-belt service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLow mileage is not automatically an advantage. A rarely driven LS 430 may have more age-related deterioration than a regularly used and serviced example. Buy on condition and records, and reserve money for repairs that would be minor on a basic sedan but costly on a luxury flagship.
10. Volvo P1800
The Volvo P1800 has the most extraordinary individual mileage record on this list. Irv Gordon’s 1966 Volvo 1800S reached 3,000,000 miles on September 18, 2013. Guinness World Records later listed the car at 3,039,122 miles as of May 1, 2014.
This is remarkable evidence that the model’s basic mechanical design can endure exceptional use. It is not a population-wide reliability statistic. Gordon drove unusually high annual mileage, maintained the car meticulously, and the vehicle received replacement and refurbishment work over its life. The record therefore shows what is possible with a durable car and extraordinary commitment—not what an ordinary P1800 will do without extensive maintenance.
Today, condition and originality are major concerns. Parts availability, corrosion, previous restoration quality, electrical work, and specialist labor can matter more than the model’s famous mileage record. It is a historic-car purchase, not a cheap route to trouble-free transportation.

How to buy one without being misled by the reputation
- Get the 17-character VIN. Do not rely only on a seller’s description of the year, trim, or engine.
- Check NHTSA.gov/Recalls. Look for unrepaired safety recalls using the individual VIN. Recall status can vary from one vehicle to another, and recall repairs are completed free by the manufacturer’s dealer network.
- Request maintenance records. Look specifically for timing-belt replacement, transmission-fluid service, cooling-system repairs, hybrid-system work, and four-wheel-drive maintenance where applicable.
- Inspect the structure. Check the frame, subframes, floor, suspension mounting points, and body for rust, flood damage, poor accident repairs, and corrosion hidden under undercoating.
- Use an independent mechanic. A pre-purchase inspection can identify leaks, worn suspension, overheating, drivetrain noise, brake problems, and electronic faults before money changes hands.
- Budget for wear items. Price tires, brakes, struts, bushings, batteries, timing belts, hybrid components, and drivetrain repairs before deciding what the car is worth.
- Judge condition before mileage. A high-mileage car with complete records may be a better purchase than a low-mileage vehicle that sat unused or was poorly maintained.
What the reliability evidence does not prove
Toyota and Honda do not make cars that never break. Every manufacturer has weak model years, recalls, redesign-related problems, owner-neglected examples, and vehicles damaged by rust or accidents. Consumer Reports notes that new or extensively redesigned models can be less predictable than mature carryover designs.
Likewise, a 250,000-mile probability is not a maintenance-free rating. Cars that reach that mileage usually require scheduled servicing, replacement wear items, and sometimes major drivetrain work. A recall-free vehicle is not automatically more reliable either: recalls concern safety defects or regulatory noncompliance, not every possible mechanical failure.
FAQ
What is the most reliable car ever made?
There is no authoritative all-time winner because reliability studies use different methods. The Toyota Land Cruiser has one of the strongest historical durability reputations, while the Toyota Sequoia led iSeeCars’ 2025 longevity study with a 39.1% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

Which reliable car is cheapest to maintain?
The Toyota Corolla is usually the most economical choice among the models listed because it is common, mechanically straightforward in many generations, and supported by widely available parts and repair shops. The specific year and condition still matter more than the badge.
Is a Prius reliable after 200,000 miles?
It can be. The Prius had a 12.2% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles in iSeeCars’ 2025 passenger-car analysis. At that mileage, have the hybrid system, battery condition, cooling system, brakes, and service history checked before buying.
Does high mileage mean a car is unreliable?
No. Mileage is only one variable. Maintenance, rust, accident history, climate, driving conditions, and the quality of previous repairs can be more important. A documented high-mileage car may be safer to buy than a low-mileage vehicle with neglected maintenance.
The Bottom Line
The Toyota Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Sequoia, Corolla, Camry, Prius, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Lexus LS 430, and Volvo P1800 all have credible claims to exceptional durability—but for different reasons. The Toyota SUVs benefit from strong longevity data and rugged construction; the Corolla, Camry, Prius, Civic, and Accord combine long production histories with strong high-mileage evidence; and the LS 430 and P1800 stand out as historical examples with important age and maintenance qualifications.
