The Toyota RAV4 was America’s best-selling SUV in 2025, with 437,260 U.S. sales. The Honda CR-V followed with 368,618, while the Ford Explorer was the highest-ranked three-row SUV. This ranking defines “most popular” as the highest U.S. sales volume for an individual SUV nameplate—not the best SUV overall, the most reliable SUV, or the largest combined sales total for an automaker’s SUV lineup.

1. Toyota RAV4: 437,260 sales

The Toyota RAV4 was the clear sales leader among individual SUV nameplates in the 2025 dataset. Its 437,260 sales put it nearly 69,000 units ahead of the Honda CR-V in second place. Sales increased 1.48% from 2024, and Toyota described 2025 as the RAV4’s best-ever year.

  • 5. Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.

The RAV4’s appeal is straightforward: it occupies the highly competitive compact-crossover class, offers a practical cabin and cargo area, and is available in several configurations, including hybrid-oriented variants. That combination gives it a broad audience ranging from small families and commuters to buyers who want more utility than a sedan without moving to a larger three-row SUV.

Popularity does not automatically make the RAV4 the right choice for every buyer. Shoppers should still compare powertrains, pricing, rear-seat space, cargo dimensions, towing requirements, and the equipment included at the trim level they can afford.

2. Honda CR-V: 368,618 sales

The Honda CR-V ranked second with 368,618 U.S. sales, up 1.44% year over year. Like the RAV4, it is a compact crossover aimed at a wide range of buyers rather than a narrow enthusiast audience.

Its sales strength reflects the priorities that drive much of the mainstream SUV market: useful passenger space, a family-friendly layout, fuel-economy-focused powertrain choices, and a cargo area that is easier to use than the trunk of many conventional cars. The CR-V is also large enough for everyday family duties while remaining smaller and generally easier to maneuver than a three-row SUV.

Honda documentation for the 2026 CR-V describes foldable rear seatbacks, cargo hooks, tie-down anchors, and a cargo storage area. Those features matter in daily use because cargo capacity is not just a maximum cubic-foot number; the ability to secure groceries, luggage, sports equipment, and smaller objects can be just as important.

3. Ford Explorer: 198,819 sales

The Ford Explorer was third overall with 198,819 sales, increasing 4.02% compared with 2024. It was also the highest-ranked three-row SUV in the list.

Ford positions the Explorer as a family SUV with seating for up to seven, depending on configuration. For the 2026 model, Ford advertises up to 85.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The Explorer therefore serves a different need from the RAV4, CR-V, Rogue, and Equinox: buyers can use the third row when needed and fold seats when they need to carry larger loads.

The trade-off is size. A three-row SUV can be more useful for larger families, but it may be less convenient in tight parking spaces and can cost more to buy, fuel, insure, and maintain than a compact crossover. A buyer who rarely uses the third row may get better value from a smaller SUV.

4. Nissan Rogue: 195,451 sales

The Nissan Rogue recorded 195,451 sales in 2025, placing fourth. It remained one of America’s highest-volume SUVs despite a 13.29% decline from 2024.

The Rogue competes directly in the compact-crossover segment, where buyers typically want a raised driving position, manageable exterior dimensions, practical cargo space, and reasonable operating costs. Its position near the top of the ranking shows that a single-year sales decline did not erase its substantial market presence.

The result also illustrates why both volume and trend are useful. A model can sell far more vehicles than most competitors while still losing ground from one year to the next. Prospective buyers should look at current pricing, incentives, inventory, updated equipment, and the specific model year rather than treating a prior year’s ranking as a guarantee of today’s best deal.

5. Chevrolet Equinox: 191,059 sales

Chevrolet sold 191,059 Equinox SUVs in the United States in 2025, a 4.74% improvement from 2024. Edmunds also identified the Equinox among the leading vehicles in its 2025 U.S. analysis.

The Equinox is Chevrolet’s high-volume compact SUV and competes for buyers who want a mainstream, two-row vehicle for commuting, errands, and family transportation. Its position is notable because the model sits only a few thousand sales behind the Rogue, making the middle of the ranking relatively close.

As with the other compact SUVs here, the most useful comparison is not simply the nameplate. Check the rear-seat room, cargo-floor height, available all-wheel drive, driver-assistance features, engine and transmission specifications, and standard equipment on the exact trim being considered.

6. Jeep Grand Cherokee: 187,640 sales

The Jeep Grand Cherokee ranked sixth with 187,640 sales, down 4.43% from 2024. It was the highest-ranked Jeep nameplate in this individual-model ranking.

The Grand Cherokee occupies a larger and more premium-leaning position than the compact crossovers above it. It appeals to buyers who want a more substantial SUV, available off-road capability, and the image associated with the Jeep brand. Depending on configuration, it can also be considered by shoppers who need more space or towing ability than a typical compact crossover provides.

Its size and capability come with potential compromises, including higher purchase and operating costs than smaller SUVs. Buyers should also distinguish the two-row Grand Cherokee from the three-row Grand Cherokee L, because seating capacity, dimensions, cargo space, and pricing differ.

7. Subaru Crosstrek: 175,151 sales

The Subaru Crosstrek sold 175,151 units in 2025, up 6.33% year over year. That made it the strongest-growing Subaru nameplate in this top 10 and the list’s highest-ranked subcompact crossover.

The Crosstrek’s formula combines a relatively small footprint with SUV-like ground clearance, available all-wheel drive, and a practical hatchback body. It is particularly relevant to buyers who want an easier-to-park vehicle for city and suburban use but still value foul-weather traction and access to light outdoor activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its smaller size can also be a limitation. The Crosstrek may not provide the rear-seat or cargo room that a CR-V, RAV4, Forester, or Explorer offers. Families should compare actual cargo measurements and child-seat requirements instead of assuming that every SUV body style provides similar interior space.

8. Subaru Forester: 159,677 sales

The Subaru Forester reached 159,677 sales in 2025, up a modest 0.82%. Its essentially flat year-over-year result still placed it eighth among individual SUV nameplates.

The Forester is a compact SUV with a practical, upright cabin and a strong focus on visibility, everyday usability, and all-weather capability. Compared with the smaller Crosstrek, it gives buyers more interior space while retaining a relatively manageable footprint.

The Forester is a good example of why “popular” and “best” are different categories. Sales confirm that many American buyers choose it, but they do not prove that it has the ideal fuel economy, acceleration, ride quality, technology, or cargo layout for every shopper.

9. Jeep Wrangler: 151,440 sales

The Jeep Wrangler recorded 151,440 sales in 2025, an increase of 10.14%. It was the fastest-growing model in this top 10 by percentage and the only vehicle on the list whose defining appeal is overtly off-road-oriented.

The Wrangler’s removable roof and doors, available four-wheel-drive systems, rugged styling, and trail capability set it apart from the family crossovers that dominate the rest of the ranking. Buyers choose it for experiences and capability that a RAV4, CR-V, or Equinox is not designed to replicate.

Those strengths involve compromises. Road noise, ride comfort, fuel economy, cargo practicality, and everyday convenience can vary significantly by body style, engine, tire, and trim. A Wrangler can be a highly capable off-road vehicle, but its sales volume should not be interpreted as evidence that it is the most comfortable or efficient daily driver in the group.

10. Ford Escape: 132,480 sales

The Ford Escape finished tenth with 132,480 sales, down 8.05% from 2024. It narrowly outsold the Ford Bronco, which recorded 132,216 sales in the same dataset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Escape is a compact crossover intended for buyers who want a practical, relatively easy-to-live-with SUV. Its position at the bottom of this list is still significant: selling more than 132,000 vehicles in one U.S. calendar year places it ahead of the vast majority of individual vehicle nameplates.

The close result against the Bronco is a useful reminder that “SUV” covers very different products. The Escape is a mainstream compact crossover, while the Bronco is designed around more conspicuous off-road capability and styling. They may appear in the same broad sales category, but they target different buyers.

What the ranking says about the American SUV market

Compact crossovers dominate the list. The RAV4, CR-V, Rogue, Equinox, Crosstrek, Forester, and Escape all emphasize practical everyday transportation rather than specialized performance. They are small enough for normal commuting and parking but offer the seating position, cargo flexibility, and available all-wheel drive that many buyers now expect from an SUV.

The market is not exclusively practical, however. The Explorer demonstrates continued demand for three-row family vehicles, while the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler show that buyers still choose SUVs for greater size, brand identity, towing, or off-road capability.

Edmunds reported that SUVs accounted for 60.9% of U.S. retail registrations in 2025. That figure uses a different methodology from the broader model-sales table: Edmunds’ state-level popularity analysis focuses on new retail registrations to individuals and excludes rental and government registrations. It should therefore be used as market context, not combined directly with the sales totals above.

2026 update: the Honda CR-V led through the first half

Early 2026 reporting changes the short-term picture but does not replace the completed 2025 ranking. Through the first half of 2026, the Honda CR-V had become the best-selling individual light vehicle in the United States, with GlobalData-based reporting estimating approximately 226,114 units.

The same reports put the Toyota RAV4 at approximately 153,955 units and attributed some of its weakness to inventory and production disruption during the model transition. These are partial-year figures, and the source relies on estimates. They should be presented as a first-half 2026 market update—not as a final 2026 annual SUV ranking.

In short: the RAV4 was the full-year 2025 SUV sales leader, while the CR-V led the U.S. market through the first half of 2026. A complete 2026 ranking requires the entire calendar year and a consistent model-level dataset.

How to use this list when shopping

  • Choose by mission first. A compact crossover is usually the logical starting point for commuting and small-family use. A three-row SUV makes more sense when the extra seats are used regularly. An off-road model is appropriate when trail capability is a genuine priority.
  • Compare the exact trim and model year. Standard safety equipment, infotainment, powertrains, all-wheel drive, and cargo features can change between trims and years.
  • Measure for your real cargo. Bring a stroller, cooler, sports bag, pet crate, or child-seat dimensions when possible. Published maximum cargo volume is not the same as usable space in every configuration.
  • Separate sales popularity from objective performance. These figures do not establish reliability, crash-test performance, resale value, fuel economy, or owner satisfaction.
  • Check total cost. Include insurance, tires, fuel or charging, maintenance, registration, and financing—not just the advertised purchase price.

Useful gear for owners of popular SUVs

Because the vehicles on this list are commonly used for family transportation, errands, road trips, pets, and outdoor equipment, cargo management is one of the most broadly useful accessory categories. A SUV cargo organizer can help separate groceries, emergency supplies, cleaning products, and smaller items that would otherwise slide around the cargo floor.

Fitment is not universal. Before buying, check the product’s dimensions, attachment method, cargo-floor configuration, and compatibility with the exact vehicle year and trim. A model-specific organizer may attach differently from a folding universal design.

An all-weather SUV cargo liner is another practical option for owners who carry muddy shoes, pets, sports equipment, gardening supplies, or leaking grocery bags. Toyota’s RAV4 materials specifically highlight weather floor and cargo mats, but the correct liner remains dependent on the vehicle, model year, trim, and floor configuration. Do not assume that a liner advertised for one RAV4, CR-V, Explorer, or Forester fits every version of that nameplate.

For road trips, a portable tire inflator can be a useful emergency tool, but compare its power source, pressure range, hose length, gauge specifications, and intended vehicle coverage. It is a convenience and preparedness item, not a substitute for inspecting a damaged tire or obtaining professional roadside help.

Other potentially useful categories include vehicle-specific cargo nets, seat-back protectors, roof cargo bags, roof boxes, and OBD-II diagnostic scanners. Roof-mounted products require particular care: verify roof-load limits, crossbar requirements, fit, weather resistance, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions. For an OBD-II scanner, check compatibility with the model year and the product’s stated vehicle coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular SUV in America?

The Toyota RAV4 was the most popular SUV by full-year U.S. sales in 2025, with 437,260 vehicles sold in the model-level dataset used here.

Did the Honda CR-V outsell the Toyota RAV4?

The RAV4 outsold the CR-V for full-year 2025. However, early 2026 reporting placed the CR-V first in the United States through the first half of the year. Those partial-year estimates are not a final 2026 ranking.

Are these the best SUVs to buy?

They are the 10 highest-volume individual SUV nameplates in the cited 2025 U.S. sales compilation. Sales popularity does not prove that a vehicle is the best choice for reliability, safety, fuel economy, price, towing, off-road use, or owner satisfaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might SUV rankings differ between websites?

Sources may count manufacturer-reported sales, retail registrations, fleet sales, estimates, or global deliveries differently. Tesla, for example, generally reports global deliveries rather than a detailed U.S. model-by-model sales breakdown, and Edmunds’ retail-registration analysis excludes rental and government registrations.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 U.S. SUV sales race was led decisively by the Toyota RAV4, followed by the Honda CR-V. The Ford Explorer was the leading three-row model, while the Subaru Crosstrek and Jeep Wrangler posted the strongest year-over-year growth among the top 10. Use the ranking as a measure of market demand—not as a substitute for comparing the specific capabilities, costs, safety information, and equipment that matter to your household.
