2022 Chevy Bolt EUV First Drive Review: Bigger, Smarter and More Affordable, Too

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV adds genuinely useful rear-seat room and Super Cruise to the quick, affordable Bolt formula. Its slow DC charging, modest cargo area and VIN-specific battery-recall history matter just as much.

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is the more useful Bolt for families and commuters, but not because it carries much more stuff. Chevrolet stretched the wheelbase by 2.9 inches, added genuinely comfortable rear-seat space and introduced Super Cruise to the Chevrolet brand. The trade-offs are equally important: the EUV has slightly less cargo room than the smaller Bolt EV, remains front-wheel drive, charges slowly on road trips and does not ride like a polished premium crossover.

That makes the Bolt EUV a strong local and suburban electric car—quick, easy to drive and practical to charge at home. It is a less convincing choice for frequent long-distance travel. Buyers considering one used should also treat the high-voltage battery recall as a VIN-specific due-diligence item, not a footnote.

A longer Bolt with more useful passenger space

The Bolt EUV was an all-new companion to the refreshed 2022 Bolt EV, not a replacement for it. Chevrolet gave the EUV a longer body and wheelbase, then used most of the additional length where passengers would notice it: in the second row.

Specification 2022 Bolt EUV 2022 Bolt EV
Wheelbase 105.3 inches 102.4 inches
Overall length 169.5 inches 163.2 inches
Rear legroom 39.1 inches 36.0 inches
Passenger volume 96.5 cubic feet 93.9 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind rear seat 16.3 cubic feet 16.6 cubic feet
Maximum cargo volume with rear seats folded 56.9 cubic feet 57.0 cubic feet

Those figures come from Chevrolet’s official Bolt EV and Bolt EUV specifications. They explain the EUV’s central contradiction: it feels more spacious inside, especially in the back, but it does not provide a meaningful cargo advantage over the smaller hatchback.

The “EUV” name and upright shape can also create expectations the vehicle does not meet. There is no all-wheel-drive option, and the EUV’s ground clearance is not a meaningful step toward off-road or rough-road capability. Think of it as a roomier electric hatchback with crossover-inspired proportions, not a small electric SUV designed for trails, snow or serious cargo duty.

What changed inside for 2022

Chevrolet made the cabin look and operate more like a modern car than the outgoing Bolt’s interior. The EUV received a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8-inch reconfigurable instrument display, electronic shift controls and a dedicated button for one-pedal driving. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, reducing the need to plug in a phone every time you got behind the wheel.

The standard driver-assistance and safety equipment was also substantial for the class. Chevrolet listed automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, following-distance indication and automatic high beams as standard equipment. The detailed equipment summary is available in Chevrolet’s 2022 Bolt EUV media information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The front seats and dashboard benefited from the redesign, and available ventilated seats helped the EUV feel more upscale in better-equipped versions. It still was not a luxury cabin. Much of the interior used hard plastic, and some details felt cost-conscious. MotorTrend noted that the front USB ports sat deep in the phone-storage cubby, while the tested rear-seat arrangement provided one USB-A and one USB-C port for back-seat passengers. Those are small complaints, but they matter in a vehicle marketed as a family-friendly upgrade.

Rear-seat comfort is the real upgrade

The EUV’s 39.1 inches of rear legroom is the feature that justifies choosing it over the Bolt EV. A tall adult can sit behind another tall adult without the cramped-knee feeling common in small electric cars. Autoblog reported that a six-foot passenger sitting behind another six-footer had ample space to stretch out, which is a more useful description of the EUV’s advantage than simply calling it “larger.”

Rear headroom is less generous, and the cargo area remains modest. With 16.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats, the EUV is adequate for groceries, backpacks and everyday errands, but it is not especially capacious for a vehicle with SUV-like styling. Folding the rear seats increases the official maximum to 56.9 cubic feet, but the EUV’s practical advantage is passenger comfort rather than hauling volume.

Quick acceleration and excellent regenerative controls

The Bolt EUV uses a single permanent-magnet electric motor driving the front wheels. Output is 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. That is enough to make the EUV feel much quicker than its modest price and practical shape suggest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing recorded 0-to-60-mph times of 6.7 seconds by MotorTrend and 6.8 seconds by Car and Driver. Those are test results rather than a guarantee for every vehicle or condition, but they accurately describe the EUV’s character: it has immediate launch response and strong passing power. The front tires can spin if the accelerator is applied aggressively, especially on a poor or wet surface, so the instant torque needs a little restraint.

The best part of the driving experience may be the regenerative-braking hardware and software. One-pedal driving can bring the car to a complete stop using the accelerator pedal, while a steering-wheel-mounted Regen on Demand paddle lets the driver add controlled deceleration without moving to the brake pedal. In urban traffic, those controls make the EUV smooth and easy to operate. Drivers who dislike strong regenerative braking can adapt to the system, but the Bolt gives them useful ways to control it rather than forcing one fixed behavior.

Ride and handling depend on the road beneath it

Road-test opinions on the Bolt EUV’s ride quality were notably divided. MotorTrend criticized the suspension’s body control, reporting harsh impacts and unsettled behavior over rough pavement. It was more positive about the steering feedback and the regenerative controls.

Car and Driver reached a more favorable conclusion after driving the EUV on damaged Michigan roads, finding it composed and smooth enough while remaining nimble around town. That publication criticized the steering for lacking feel, the opposite emphasis from MotorTrend’s assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defensible conclusion is not that one tester was right and the other was wrong. The EUV is easy to place in traffic, maneuverable in town and generally competent as a commuter. Its ride can feel considerably less settled on broken pavement, depending on the road surface and your expectations. It is not a sports car, and it does not deliver the quiet, absorbent ride some buyers expect from a more expensive EV.

For a daily driver, the quick motor, compact footprint and one-pedal controls are more important than ultimate handling precision. For buyers choosing between the EUV and newer, more refined electric crossovers, the suspension tuning and cabin materials reveal the age of the underlying vehicle.

Range is useful; highway charging is the limitation

The Bolt EUV has a 65-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 247-mile EPA-estimated range. That is 12 miles less than the 2022 Bolt EV’s 259-mile EPA rating, despite the EUV’s longer body and more spacious cabin.

EPA range is the right standardized number for comparing vehicles, but it is not a promise of highway distance. In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway test, the Bolt EUV traveled 190 miles. That result is specific to the test route, weather, speed and conditions, so it should not be treated as a universal range guarantee. It is valuable context, however, for anyone who expects to spend a lot of time at interstate speeds.

Charging method Chevrolet’s published guidance or independent result What it means
120-volt household outlet Approximately 4 miles of range per hour Useful as a backup or for low daily mileage, but slow for regular full charging
240-volt AC charging Approximately 7 hours for a full charge The practical home-charging solution for most owners
DC fast charging Up to 95 miles in 30 minutes, according to Chevrolet Actual results vary with charger output, temperature, battery state of charge and vehicle settings
Independent DC fast-charge test 53-kW maximum and 10-to-90-percent charge in 84 minutes, according to Car and Driver Repeated highway stops can be much longer than those in newer EVs

The EUV’s AC charging performance is perfectly workable when the car is plugged in overnight. Owners with only a 120-volt outlet can add a small amount of range each hour, but that approach becomes inconvenient if the car is driven extensively every day. If home charging is part of the purchase plan, compare a J1772 EV charger only after checking the EUV’s connector compatibility, the charger’s amperage, the home circuit’s capacity and the requirements for safe installation. The equipment is only as useful as the electrical service supporting it.

DC fast charging is where the Bolt EUV falls behind. Chevrolet’s claim of up to 95 miles in 30 minutes is dependent on conditions and charger output. Car and Driver’s measured 53-kW peak and 84-minute 10-to-90-percent session show the more important road-trip reality: the EUV can make a long trip, but it asks for more time at charging stations than many newer EVs.

SEGUMA 32A Level 2 EV Charger, J1772 Charger with NEMA 14-50 Plug
  • High Charging Speed: The Seguma 32amp Level 2 EV charger equipped with NEMA 14-50 plug, provides faster charging (approx. 6 times faster) compared to standard Level 1 EV chargers, allowing you to charge your electric vehicle more quickly
  • Adjustable Charging Current from 32A to 10A: This ev charger level 2 comes with adjustable amperage range of 10A/16A/20A/24A/32Amp. Simply touch the "A" button to select the proper charging speed according to your specific needs
  • Intelligent 1.77" TFT Display: The smart large size TFT screen on the NEMA 14-50 level 2 EV charger provides clear and real-time updates on the key charging information including charging current/voltage/power kWh, charging time and work status, etc
  • Clear LED Indicators: The humanized designed LED indicator on the electric vehicle charger control box can show the real-time charging status of your EV, promptly alerting you to any concerns
  • Intelligent Charging: Feature with advanced chipset, ev charger station offers extra protection against over and under voltage, overcharging, and overheating. The IP66 home ev charger auto shuts off once your vehicle is fully charged, enhancing car safety

That distinction changes how the vehicle should be used. For a commuter who leaves home with a full battery, 247 EPA miles is a useful cushion. For a driver planning several high-speed charging stops in one day, the combination of highway efficiency and slow charging becomes tiring. The Bolt EUV is much better at replacing gasoline for local driving than at imitating a fast-charging road-trip vehicle.

Super Cruise is impressive—and unusually complicated to justify here

The 2022 Bolt EUV was the first Chevrolet vehicle to offer GM’s Super Cruise. In this application, the system combined adaptive cruise control, lane centering and a driver-facing camera that monitored the driver’s face and eyes. On compatible roads, it could control steering, acceleration and braking while the driver remained responsible for supervision.

Super Cruise did not work everywhere. It depended on GM-mapped divided, restricted-access highways, clear lane markings and conditions the system considered suitable. It was not a self-driving system, and the driver had to remain attentive. The 2022 Bolt EUV also lacked the automatic lane-change capability associated with some later GM applications.

When the mapped-road conditions were right, Super Cruise was a genuine differentiator. It could reduce fatigue during a long, steady highway drive more effectively than ordinary adaptive cruise control because it handled lane centering without requiring constant steering input.

There is also a contradiction in the feature’s positioning. Super Cruise is most appealing on long highway journeys, but the Bolt EUV’s slow DC charging and mediocre high-speed efficiency make it less attractive for frequent long-distance travel. Car and Driver considered the system impressive while questioning how necessary it was in a vehicle that was not especially well suited to repeated road trips. Buyers should view it as an optional convenience feature, not evidence that the Bolt EUV is a premium long-distance cruiser.

Launch pricing made the basic EUV the value play

In the contemporary launch and testing context, Chevrolet listed the Bolt EUV’s base price at $33,995. MotorTrend tested a Premier priced at $43,685, while Car and Driver tested a heavily equipped Premier Launch Edition at $43,995. Those figures describe launch-era new-car pricing, not what a used 2022 Bolt EUV should cost today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both road tests made a similar value argument: the entry-level or moderately equipped EUV made more sense than loading the car with every available option. MotorTrend identified a $2,200 Super Cruise package and a $2,495 Sun and Sound package as major contributors to the tested car’s price.

For a used buyer, local transaction prices can vary substantially with mileage, trim, battery-recall history, location, title history, incentives and condition. Compare actual local listings rather than treating the original MSRP as a current market value. A well-priced LT may deliver the core EUV experience without paying a large premium for equipment you do not need; a Premier can be worthwhile if its comfort and technology features are priorities.

Used 2022 Bolt EUV buyers must verify the battery recall by VIN

Do not buy a 2022 Bolt EUV based only on the model year or a seller’s statement that “the recall was done.” The 2022 EUV was included in GM’s high-voltage battery safety recall population. GM attributed the fire risk to the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in certain LG battery cells.

GM’s recall information says eligible 2020–2022 Bolt EVs and 2022 Bolt EUVs could receive advanced diagnostic software. The software initially limited the battery to an 80-percent maximum state of charge and could restore 100-percent charging after approximately 6,200 miles if it detected no anomaly. Certain vehicles instead required battery-module replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2023 NHTSA-hosted recall notice identified the final remedy under GM recall N212345944 and instructed owners to contact a Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV-certified dealer even if an earlier software update had already been performed. The notice said the remedy was free. Because completion is VIN-specific and campaign records can change, use the official tools rather than inferring status from the year or trim:

  1. Obtain the vehicle’s complete 17-digit VIN from the car and the seller’s paperwork.
  2. Check the Bolt EUV battery recall by VIN through GM’s official recall resource.
  3. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall information and compare the result with the GM record.
  4. If the record is unclear, ask a Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV-certified dealer to confirm the completed remedy before finalizing the purchase.
  5. Request service documentation and make sure an earlier software update has not been mistaken for the final required remedy.

A vehicle with open recall work is not automatically a bad purchase, but the status must be resolved and documented. Also evaluate the ordinary used-car factors—mileage, title history, accident history, condition and local pricing—because recall completion alone does not establish the overall condition or value of a particular EUV.

Who should buy the 2022 Bolt EUV?

The EUV makes the most sense for a driver who can charge at home, usually travels locally or regionally, needs a genuinely usable back seat and values quick acceleration more than maximum cargo capacity. It is particularly well suited to commuting, school runs and urban driving, where one-pedal operation and compact dimensions reduce daily effort.

It is a weaker choice for someone who frequently drives hundreds of highway miles, expects short charging stops, needs all-wheel drive, carries bulky cargo or wants a luxurious interior. Those buyers may find the EUV’s small cargo area, surface-sensitive ride and slow DC charging frustrating even if its purchase price is attractive.

2022 Chevy Bolt EUV strengths and weaknesses

What it does well

  • Comfortable rear-seat legroom for a small EV
  • Strong 200-horsepower, 266-pound-foot electric-motor response
  • 247-mile EPA-estimated range for local and regional use
  • Excellent one-pedal driving and Regen on Demand controls
  • Modern infotainment and a useful digital instrument display
  • Available Super Cruise, unusual at this price when new
  • Practical overnight charging from a 240-volt connection

Where it gives ground

  • Cargo volume is fractionally lower than the Bolt EV’s
  • No all-wheel drive and no meaningful off-road positioning
  • DC fast charging peaks at a modest level by newer-EV standards
  • Highway range can be well below the EPA estimate
  • Ride quality drew conflicting but legitimate criticism
  • Hard cabin plastics and awkward front USB placement
  • Battery-recall history makes VIN verification essential

Final first-drive verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV improved the Bolt formula in the place that matters most for a family commuter: the rear seat. It also brought a fresher cabin, excellent regenerative controls and an unusually sophisticated highway-assistance option to an affordable Chevrolet EV.

But the longer body did not turn the Bolt into a more capable utility vehicle. Cargo capacity barely changed, all-wheel drive remained unavailable, and the older battery and charging architecture made long trips less convenient than the EUV’s Super Cruise feature might suggest. The result is a practical, quick and affordable daily EV—not a fully modern road-trip machine.

As a used purchase, the EUV can still be compelling if its owner can charge at home and the battery recall has been verified by VIN. Without that verification, the attractive price is not enough reason to proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV a real SUV?

It has a taller, crossover-inspired shape, but it is better understood as a roomier electric hatchback. It has front-wheel drive, no all-wheel-drive option and no meaningful off-road focus. Its biggest practical improvement is rear-seat legroom, not cargo capacity or ground clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How far can the 2022 Bolt EUV travel on a charge?

Its EPA-estimated range is 247 miles. Real-world results vary with speed, temperature, terrain and climate use. In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway test, it traveled 190 miles, so frequent high-speed travel should be planned with a meaningful margin.

Is Super Cruise on the 2022 Bolt EUV self-driving?

No. Super Cruise can control steering, acceleration and braking on compatible GM-mapped divided highways, but it requires an attentive driver and clear lane markings. The 2022 Bolt EUV also did not have automatic lane changes.

Should I buy a used 2022 Bolt EUV after the battery recall?

Only after checking the specific vehicle’s 17-digit VIN through GM and NHTSA and confirming the final remedy with a Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV-certified dealer if necessary. Some vehicles received diagnostic software, while others required battery-module replacement. Model year alone does not prove recall completion.

The Bottom Line

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV is a better family commuter than the smaller Bolt EV because its rear seat is genuinely roomy, not because it offers more cargo space. It is quick, efficient enough for everyday use and unusually easy to drive in traffic. Its slow DC charging, limited highway range in testing, mixed ride quality and recall history keep it from being an all-purpose EV recommendation.

Buy one for local and suburban driving, install or use practical home charging, and verify the battery remedy by VIN before purchase. Treat Super Cruise as a useful optional convenience—not as a substitute for a newer long-distance EV architecture.
