The Tesla Model 3 is the most American-made vehicle you can buy today under Cars.com’s 2026 American-Made Index. The Tesla Model Y ranks second, followed by the Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda Ridgeline.
The surprising part is the badge mix: five of the top 10 vehicles come from Honda or Acura, while no Ford or Chevrolet appears in the top 10. That is because American-made and American-branded are different measurements. Cars.com’s ranking looks at where a vehicle is assembled, where its parts and powertrain originate, and the automaker’s U.S. manufacturing workforce—not simply who owns the brand.
This ranking covers 2026 model-year vehicles and reflects information checked through August 10, 2026. “Cars” is being used broadly: the list includes electric sedans, SUVs, pickups and a minivan.

Important: The AALA figure means U.S./Canadian equipment content by value. It is not a U.S.-only percentage and does not mean that the same percentage of every individual vehicle’s parts were made in the United States. The figures can vary by trim, powertrain, plant and production mix.
How Cars.com defines American-made
Cars.com’s American-Made Index is a composite manufacturing and economic-contribution ranking. For the 2026 model year, Cars.com evaluated approximately 379 vehicles and published 86 qualifying entries.
The index considers:
- Where final assembly takes place.
- The percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts or equipment content.
- The country of origin for available engines or electric motors.
- The country of origin for available transmissions.
- The automaker’s U.S. manufacturing workforce.
Cars.com does not publish the precise weighting or a model-by-model score calculation. It scores vehicles on a 100-point scale and uses heavier curb weight as a tiebreaker when necessary. Therefore, the AMI is not a simple ranking of the AALA percentage. A vehicle with 75% North American content will not automatically outrank every vehicle with 74%.
Cars.com also applies eligibility rules. Vehicles can be excluded because they exceed 8,500 pounds of gross vehicle weight rating, are produced in very low volume, are fleet-only, are about to be discontinued or moved out of the United States, were not yet on sale during the study period, fail minimum sales or inventory thresholds, or lack enough verifiable data. Those rules help explain why a vehicle with a high content percentage may not appear in the current top 10.

The ranking, vehicle by vehicle
1. Tesla Model 3
Displayed starting price: $36,990
Assembly: Fremont, California
AALA content: 75% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Electric sedan
The Model 3 takes the No. 1 position because it combines U.S. assembly with a high reported North American content figure and U.S.-sourced motor and transmission fields in the 2026 data reviewed by Cars.com and NHTSA. Under this particular composite methodology, it is the most American-made vehicle on the current list.
It is the logical choice for a shopper who wants a relatively affordable EV sedan and places a high value on domestic manufacturing. Its sedan shape may also appeal to buyers who do not need the cargo height or seating position of an SUV.
The AMI does not answer whether the Model 3 is the right EV for you. Before buying, check access to home charging, public charging on your regular routes, insurance costs, service availability and Tesla’s direct-sales and service model. Software-dependent controls and changing pricing and equipment can also affect the ownership experience. The ranking does not mean every Model 3 version has identical sourcing or that it is the most American by every possible definition.

Displayed starting price: $39,990
Assembly: Fremont, California, or Austin, Texas
AALA content: 70% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Electric crossover SUV
The Model Y ranks second with U.S. assembly, a 70% North American content figure and U.S.-sourced motor and transmission fields in the reviewed data. It offers the same basic domestic-manufacturing appeal as the Model 3 but in a more practical crossover format.
Choose it over the Model 3 if you need a higher seating position, a larger hatchback opening or more flexible cargo space. It is a better fit for many households that want an EV but do not want a traditional sedan.
There is an important vehicle-specific caveat: Model Y production can come from Fremont or Austin. Tesla’s current Model Y page shows multiple 2026 versions with different prices, equipment and range, so do not apply one price, range figure or assembly assumption to every Model Y. Confirm the exact vehicle’s window sticker and VIN-related information before purchasing.

3. Jeep Gladiator
Displayed starting price: $39,820
Assembly: Toledo, Ohio
AALA content: 74% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Midsize pickup
The Gladiator is the highest-ranked conventional pickup and rises to third place in the 2026 index. Its Toledo assembly location and 74% North American content give it a strong manufacturing profile.

The Gladiator is best for a buyer who specifically wants an open-air, off-road-oriented pickup. Removable roof and door features and Jeep’s trail-focused identity make it a specialized vehicle rather than a generic family truck.
That specialization brings compromises. Ride comfort, wind noise, fuel economy, rear-seat practicality and purchase price should all be considered. The Gladiator ranks above the Ridgeline in the AMI, but that does not make it the better pickup for a commuter, family or cargo user. Compare towing, payload, bed utility and off-road requirements separately.
4. Jeep Grand Cherokee
Displayed starting price: $38,920
Assembly: Detroit, Michigan
AALA content: 73% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Midsize SUV
The Grand Cherokee ranks fourth after a sharp improvement in the 2026 index. Cars.com reports that its domestic content increased significantly, helping lift it well above its 2025 position.
It suits buyers who want a traditional midsize SUV with a strong domestic-manufacturing profile and more SUV capability than a sedan. The Grand Cherokee family also includes the three-row Grand Cherokee L, but shoppers must distinguish the two-row Grand Cherokee from the L when comparing price, space and configuration.
For 2026, Jeep advertises a new 2.0-liter Hurricane four-cylinder for applicable configurations, rated by Jeep at 324 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, with claimed fuel economy of 23 mpg combined and a claimed range of 529 miles. Those figures are Jeep’s claims and must be matched to the specific version being considered; they are not measures used to create the AMI ranking.

5. Honda Ridgeline
Displayed starting price: $40,795
Assembly: Lincoln, Alabama
AALA content: 75% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Midsize pickup
The Ridgeline ties the Model 3 for the highest verified AALA content figure among the top 10, although it ranks fifth overall because Cars.com uses more than the content percentage. Its U.S. assembly and high North American equipment content make it one of the strongest choices for a buyer focused on manufacturing contribution.
Its buyer profile is different from the Gladiator’s. The Ridgeline is aimed at people who want a pickup bed but also expect a comfortable, family-friendly road vehicle. It is worth comparing with the Gladiator and full-size pickups for towing, payload, off-road ability, bed length and cabin usability.
Calling it the most American-made pickup requires a qualification: it ranks higher than the Gladiator in the AMI, but the Gladiator may be the better choice for someone whose priority is open-air driving and serious off-road character. Manufacturing rank and truck capability are separate judgments.
6. Honda Odyssey
Displayed starting price: $42,795
Assembly: Lincoln, Alabama
AALA content: 70% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Minivan
The Odyssey’s sixth-place finish demonstrates why manufacturing-based rankings can favor practical vehicles over more fashionable body styles. It combines Alabama assembly with 70% U.S./Canadian content.
For families, the Odyssey’s sliding doors, multiple seating rows and flexible cargo layout may matter more than an SUV’s styling. It is the strongest fit here for parents who regularly carry children, car seats, passengers and bulky cargo.

The trade-off is not manufacturing-related. Some shoppers prefer an SUV’s appearance, available all-weather hardware or greater trail capability. If those features matter more than maximum interior flexibility, compare the Odyssey with the Grand Cherokee, Passport and MDX rather than assuming the highest family utility makes it universally best.
7. Lexus TX 350
Displayed starting price: $56,940
Assembly: Princeton, Indiana
AALA content: 65% U.S./Canadian equipment content
Type: Luxury three-row SUV
The Lexus TX 350 ranks seventh, showing that a Japanese luxury badge can sit ahead of many vehicles marketed as domestic. Its Princeton, Indiana assembly location and 65% North American content are the key manufacturing factors.
The TX 350 is a good fit for buyers who want a large, premium three-row SUV while placing meaningful weight on U.S. assembly and manufacturing. Its upscale positioning may appeal to shoppers who would otherwise consider the Acura MDX or a domestic luxury SUV.
Keep the model designation precise. The top-10 entry is the TX 350; the TX 500h and TX 550h+ should not automatically be treated as equally American-made because powertrain and content figures can vary by version. Also budget for the size, fuel consumption, premium maintenance and luxury-SUV ownership costs.
8. Honda Accord
Displayed starting price: $28,395
Assembly: Marysville, Ohio
AALA content: No exact 2026 figure assigned here
The Accord is the most affordable conventional vehicle in the top 10 and the clearest choice for a buyer who wants a familiar midsize sedan rather than an EV, SUV, pickup or minivan. Its long-standing Marysville manufacturing footprint helped it reach eighth place in the AMI.
Honda offers the 2026 Accord as a gas sedan and a hybrid. Honda’s current model page lists the sedan at $28,395 and the hybrid at $33,795. The powertrain distinction matters: Edmunds reports that the gas Accord uses a U.S.-built engine and transmission, while the hybrid powertrain is sourced from Japan.

This is also a reminder that a nameplate does not necessarily have one universal sourcing profile.
9. Acura MDX
Displayed starting price: $51,800
Assembly: East Liberty, Ohio
AALA content: 70% for the listed front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions
The MDX places Acura in the top 10 and gives premium-SUV shoppers a strong domestic-manufacturing option. The listed versions carry 70% U.S./Canadian content and are assembled in Ohio.
It is best suited to buyers who want a premium three-row SUV without giving up the practical advantages of U.S. assembly and North American content. Compare it with the Lexus TX 350 and Grand Cherokee L for third-row space, price, fuel economy and equipment.
Do not assume that every MDX has the same sourcing. NHTSA lists different content levels for some variants, including the all-wheel-drive Type S. Verify the trim and powertrain rather than applying the 70% figure to an entire MDX inventory.
10. Honda Passport
Displayed starting price: $44,950

The Passport rounds out the list with Alabama assembly and 65% North American content. It is the most direct fit for buyers who want SUV practicality without paying for or managing a third row.
The Passport should be compared with the Grand Cherokee, Ridgeline and Acura MDX on price, passenger and cargo space, towing, fuel economy, powertrain and luxury equipment. It may be the best match for a particular buyer even though it ranks tenth for manufacturing contribution.

Five of the top 10 vehicles carry Honda or Acura badges: the Ridgeline, Odyssey, Accord, MDX and Passport. Lexus contributes the TX 350. Tesla supplies two entries, and Jeep supplies two.
This is not evidence that Honda, Acura or Lexus are U.S.-owned brands. It shows that a foreign-owned automaker can create a larger U.S. economic footprint for a particular vehicle than a nominally American brand.
These companies assemble significant vehicle volumes in U.S. plants, source some engines, transmissions or motors from the United States, and combine relatively high North American content with substantial production. Cars.com’s workforce factor also rewards automakers with large U.S. manufacturing operations. Across the full 2026 index, Cars.com says Toyota contributed 14 vehicles and Honda contributed 13, while GM, Ford and Stellantis contributed 13, nine and six respectively.
The grille badge is therefore a poor shortcut. A vehicle’s actual manufacturing footprint depends on the model, plant, powertrain and supply chain—not only on the nationality associated with the marque.
What 75% American-made really means
It does not mean that 75% of the vehicle was made in the United States.
Under the American Automobile Labeling Act, the AALA percentage is the share of equipment content from the United States and Canada combined, calculated by value. It is not a count of parts. One expensive component can affect the percentage more than many inexpensive components.
NHTSA explains that the figure is calculated on a carline basis rather than for every individual vehicle, may be rounded to the nearest 5%, and does not reveal the origin of every component. It also excludes final assembly, distribution and other non-parts costs. The Canadian portion cannot be separated from the U.S. portion using the combined number alone.
For that reason, the accurate wording is U.S./Canadian equipment content or North American content. Calling the figure “American parts” overstates what the data proves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the window sticker can tell you
For most new passenger vehicles, the AALA label on the window sticker identifies:
- The percentage of U.S./Canadian equipment content.
- Foreign countries that individually supply at least 15% of equipment content, up to two countries.
- The final assembly point.
- The country of origin for the engine or electric motor.
- The country of origin for the transmission.
- A statement explaining what the content figure excludes.
The sticker is more useful than a generic internet list when a model is built at multiple plants or sold with gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric powertrains. A Model Y from Fremont may not have the same production details as one from Austin. An Accord gas model may differ from an Accord hybrid. MDX content can vary by trim and drivetrain.
Why the 2026 ranking changed
The 2026 index contains 86 qualifying vehicles, compared with 99 in 2025. The Model 3 and Model Y remain first and second, but the rest of the top 10 changed substantially:
- The Jeep Gladiator moved into third place.
- The Jeep Grand Cherokee climbed sharply to fourth after a significant increase in domestic content.
- Honda occupies half of the top 10.
- The 2025 Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 are no longer in the 2026 top 10.
- EV representation across the entire index fell from 11 vehicles to five.
Cars.com attributes some of these changes to vehicle availability, production changes, tariffs and the expiration of federal EV incentives in late 2025. Those factors help explain the year-over-year movement, but they should not be treated as the sole cause of every individual ranking change.

Why the Volkswagen ID.4 is missing despite high content
The 2026 NHTSA AALA data lists Volkswagen ID.4 versions at 75% or 76% U.S./Canadian content. Yet the ID.4 does not appear in the 2026 Cars.com top 10.
The reason is the difference between a government content table and a current-production ranking. Volkswagen discontinued ID.4 production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant in mid-April 2026 while using the plant for higher-volume products. Volkswagen’s first-quarter 2026 report confirms the production change, and Cars.com reports that remaining 2026 inventory may still be sold.
That means an ID.4 may still be available from a dealer even though it is no longer being built in the United States. It is a crucial distinction between the highest domestic-content model shown in a data table and a current-production contender in an annual ranking.
Best choice by type of buyer
Cars.com’s AMI supplies the manufacturing ranking. The recommendations below are practical interpretations, not additional Cars.com scores or quality ratings.

How to verify the exact vehicle before buying
- Find the vehicle’s window sticker. Use the sticker attached to the vehicle or obtain the VIN-specific version from the dealer.
- Confirm final assembly. Check the listed city and state instead of assuming that every example of the nameplate is U.S.-assembled.
- Read the U.S./Canadian content figure. Treat it as value-based North American content, not a literal part count.
- Check the engine or motor origin. This is especially important for vehicles offered with gas, hybrid or electric powertrains.
- Check the transmission origin. The powertrain may be sourced differently even within one model line.
- Match the trim and drivetrain. Compare the sticker’s exact configuration with the vehicle advertised online.
- Confirm the VIN. Make sure the sticker belongs to the vehicle you are inspecting and not a similarly equipped example.
- Ask the dealer about inventory status. A current model can be remaining inventory rather than a vehicle still in U.S. production.
What this ranking does not measure
The AMI measures manufacturing contribution, not whether a vehicle is the best purchase. It does not rank:
- Reliability or predicted repair costs.
- Crash-test performance or driver-assistance quality.
- Ride comfort, handling or interior quality.
- Fuel or electricity costs.
- Charging access and road-trip convenience.
- Towing, payload or off-road performance.
- Insurance premiums, maintenance costs or resale value.
- Dealer support, local inventory or transaction price.
- Infotainment and software quality.
Those considerations can completely change the right choice. For example, the Model 3 is No. 1 for Cars.com’s manufacturing measure, but an Accord may be a better fit for a shopper who does not have reliable home charging. The Ridgeline ranks above the Gladiator, but the Gladiator may be the better tool for a buyer who prioritizes trail use and open-air capability. A content ranking should narrow the search, not make the entire buying decision.
Why other “American car” lists may disagree
There is no single universal definition of an American-made vehicle. The Kogod Auto Index uses its own methodology. Edmunds uses AALA data but combines it with its own testing and recommendations; its coverage distinguishes the vehicle with the highest domestic content from the vehicle it recommends, calling the Acura Integra the most American gas-powered car in its category while recommending the Honda Accord.
Car and Driver uses another standard: instrumented testing and editorial ratings for cars assembled in the United States, while excluding models sold from multiple locations that include non-U.S. plants. That is a quality and performance list, not a domestic-content ranking.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When comparing lists, first ask whether the source is measuring brand nationality, U.S. assembly, AALA content, total manufacturing contribution or editorial quality. Mixing those standards produces apparently contradictory results that are actually answering different questions.
The bottom line
If your definition is Cars.com’s composite measure of U.S. manufacturing contribution, the 2026 Tesla Model 3 is the top choice, followed by the Model Y. If you want a less expensive conventional sedan, the Honda Accord is the practical starting point. The Honda Odyssey is the standout family hauler, while the Honda Ridgeline is the highest-ranked general-purpose pickup and the Jeep Gladiator is the more specialized off-road alternative.
The larger lesson is more important than the order of the list: the badge on the grille does not tell you where the vehicle’s economic value was created. Check the specific window sticker, powertrain and assembly location before treating any model as more American than another.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 75% U.S./Canadian content mean that 75% of the car was made in America?
No. The AALA figure is U.S. and Canadian equipment content calculated by value. It is not a U.S.-only percentage, a count of parts or a measure of every individual vehicle. It also excludes final assembly, distribution and other non-parts costs.
Which vehicle is the most American-made under the 2026 ranking?
The Tesla Model 3 ranks No. 1 in Cars.com’s 2026 American-Made Index, followed by the Tesla Model Y. That result reflects Cars.com’s composite manufacturing methodology and does not mean the Model 3 is the best vehicle for every buyer or the most American under every possible definition.
How can I tell whether my specific car was assembled in the United States?
Check the vehicle’s window sticker. It identifies final assembly, U.S./Canadian equipment content, engine or motor origin and transmission origin. This is particularly important for models built at multiple plants or offered with different powertrains.
Why is the Volkswagen ID.4 missing even though it has high North American content?
Volkswagen’s 2026 AALA data lists ID.4 versions at 75% or 76% U.S./Canadian content, but Volkswagen discontinued U.S. ID.4 production in April 2026. Remaining vehicles may still be available from dealers, but the model was not treated as a normal current-production contender in Cars.com’s 2026 ranking.
The Bottom Line
Under Cars.com’s 2026 composite methodology, the Tesla Model 3 is the most American-made vehicle currently ranked. But the best choice depends on what you need: the Accord for an affordable sedan, the Odyssey for family practicality, the Ridgeline for a versatile pickup, the Gladiator for off-road use, or the Model Y for electric crossover utility. Always verify the exact vehicle’s window sticker because assembly location and content can change by plant, trim and powertrain.
