Best Radio-Controlled Cars for 2022: The Right RC Vehicle for Every Driver

The Traxxas Maxx was the best all-around RC vehicle for the 2022 market, but the Losi Mini-B, TRX-4, T-Maxx, Typhon, SCX24, TT-02, and MTX7 fit very different buyers. Compare terrain, speed, included equipment, total cost, and maintenance before choosing.

For most adult buyers in the 2022 market, the original Traxxas Maxx 4×4 VXL (model 89076-4) is the best all-around choice. It combines 4WD traction, a brushless 4S power system, high speed, a compact 1/10-scale footprint, and a large replacement-parts and upgrade ecosystem. However, it is not the best choice for everyone: its battery and charger were sold separately, it can be too fast for inexperienced children, and it is excessive for indoor driving or technical rock crawling.

Choose the Losi Mini-B brushed RTR for a smaller, less expensive complete package; the Traxxas TRX-4 for crawling and scale trail driving; the Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3 for nitro sound and hands-on engine maintenance; or the Axial SCX24 for tiny indoor and backyard crawling. This is a historical guide to 2022-era models and pricing, with availability notes updated through August 10, 2026.

Quick verdict: the best RC vehicles for different buyers

“Best radio-controlled car” is not really one ranking problem. A high-speed buggy, a rock crawler, a nitro monster truck, and a competition touring-car kit are built for entirely different kinds of driving. The table below is a more useful starting point than a single universal ranking.

Category 2022 pick Why it stands out
Best overall Traxxas Maxx 4×4 VXL, 89076-4 Fast, versatile 4WD basher with a compact footprint and strong parts support
Best small/value model Losi Mini-B 1/16 brushed RTR, LOS01016 Complete package with battery and charger, suitable for small spaces
Best crawler Traxxas TRX-4 Portal axles, locking differentials, selectable high/low transmission, and scale trail capability
Best nitro monster truck Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3 Traditional fuel-powered experience with engine tuning, sound, 4WD, and a two-speed transmission
Best fast buggy Arrma Typhon 4×4 3S BLX Stable 1/8-scale buggy layout and manufacturer-rated 50-plus-mph capability
Best tiny crawler Axial SCX24 Complete 1/24-scale 4WD crawler that works indoors and outdoors
Best build project Tamiya TT-02 Accessible 1/10-scale 4WD on-road chassis with a large body and upgrade ecosystem
Best competition kit Mugen MTX7 Serious nitro touring-car chassis for experienced club racers—not a beginner RTR

These are editorial recommendations based on each vehicle’s configuration, included equipment, intended terrain, and ownership demands. They are not the result of a controlled comparative test.

Which one should you buy?

  • You want speed, jumps, grass, and backyard bashing: Buy the Traxxas Maxx. Choose the Arrma Typhon 3S instead if you prefer a lower, more stable buggy.
  • You want a small complete hobby-grade model: Buy the brushed Losi Mini-B.
  • You want a small but faster model: Consider the later brushless Losi Mini-B, but do not confuse it with the 2022 brushed LOS01016.
  • You want rocks, trails, and scale realism: Buy the full-featured Traxxas TRX-4.
  • You want a tiny indoor crawler: Buy an Axial SCX24 RTR.
  • You specifically want fuel, engine noise, and tuning: Buy the Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3 only if you are prepared for nitro maintenance.
  • You want to assemble and learn how an RC car works: Choose a Tamiya TT-02 kit.
  • You want organized nitro touring-car competition: Look at the Mugen MTX7, but budget for a complete build and setup—not just the chassis kit.

What “radio-controlled car” means in this guide

RC retailers often use “car” as a general term. Several recommendations here are technically trucks: the Maxx and T-Maxx are monster trucks, the TRX-4 and SCX24 are crawlers or trail trucks, and the Typhon is a buggy. That distinction matters because body style and vehicle type predict how the model behaves.

Vehicle type Best use What to expect
Monster truck Grass, dirt, jumps, and general bashing High ground clearance and large tires, usually with a higher center of gravity
Buggy Dirt tracks, packed surfaces, and fast off-road driving Lower body, lower center of gravity, and more precise handling than a monster truck
Short-course truck Mixed-surface driving and track-style bashing Pickup-like body, wide stance, and a compromise between a buggy and monster truck
Crawler or trail truck Rocks, roots, ledges, and slow technical driving High torque, low gearing, articulation, and control rather than outright speed
On-road touring car Pavement and prepared tracks Low ground clearance and responsive handling; unsuitable for rough grass and rocks

Hobby-grade versus toy-grade RC cars

A hobby-grade model is usually a better long-term purchase for an older child, teenager, or adult who is willing to learn basic maintenance. Typical characteristics include:

#1 Best Overall
BLUEJAY Remote Control Car, 2.4GHz High Speed 33KM/H RC Cars Toys
  • 33KM/H Speedy 1:12 RC Cars: Powered by a strong RC 380 motor, the rc car can reach speeds up to 33 km/h at full speed! First-rate rc truck at this price. Enjoy your racing with 2.4GHz no delay remote controller, which has a control distance of 50 meters. Great off-road monster truck ever
  • ABS Chassis and Durable Car Frame: The whole chassis of the remote control car is made of ABS plastic and the main body is made of aluminium alloy material, which is more durable and with improved impact resistance, less weight of the RC car body
  • LED Headlights and Chassis Lights: This remote control monster truck is equipped with a Headlight, Illuminating the road ahead when playing at night. You never deny this 1:12 scale phenomenal realistic RC Truck
  • 70 mins Running Time & Rechargeable Battery: The car uses 7.4V 1400mAh rechargeable battery, 2 batteries included. It can run for up to 70 minutes at a time(35 Mins for each battery), allowing you to experience continuous and uninterrupted gaming hours
  • RC Car Toy Gifts: A great gift for birthdays and many other occasions. If you are looking for an exciting and extra cool present, you will love our toy-grade RC cars. Put your work on hold, go out with your kids, and enjoy family time
  • Proportional steering and throttle rather than simple left/right and stop/go controls.
  • Replaceable electronics, suspension arms, drivetrain components, and body parts.
  • Published exploded diagrams and replacement-part catalogs.
  • Adjustable suspension, gearing, radio settings, or differential configuration.
  • A path to repairs and upgrades instead of replacing the entire vehicle after a crash.

Hobby-grade does not mean indestructible, maintenance-free, or automatically easy. A fast brushless truck may be more expensive to operate than a toy-grade vehicle because it reaches crash speeds quickly and can damage tires, suspension parts, driveshafts, and gears. For a first-time buyer, repairability is valuable—but so is choosing a model whose speed matches the available space and driver.

Important RC terminology before you shop

RTR, roller, and kit

  • RTR, or Ready-to-Run: The vehicle is assembled and normally includes the radio system. Battery and charger may or may not be included, so check the exact SKU.
  • Roller: The chassis is assembled but lacks some or all electronics. You may need a motor, electronic speed controller, steering servo, receiver, transmitter, and battery.
  • Kit: You assemble the vehicle. Depending on the product, the kit may require a motor, ESC, radio, servo, battery, charger, body, tires, paint, or nitro engine.

The Mugen MTX7 illustrates why this distinction matters: Mugen lists the 1/10 nitro touring chassis as requiring a radio, two servos, receiver, receiver battery, 12-class engine, exhaust components, wheels, tires, body, fuel, and starting equipment. The Tamiya TT-02 Type-S similarly requires radio equipment, steering servo, ESC, battery, charger, body, and paint. An inexpensive-looking kit can therefore cost more than an RTR before it has driven a single lap.

Brushed, brushless, and nitro power

Power system Advantages Trade-offs
Brushed electric Lower initial cost, simple operation, and an approachable entry point Usually less efficient and less powerful than brushless; motor brushes wear over time
Brushless electric Higher efficiency and power potential, stronger sustained performance, and more speed Higher purchase cost and greater stress on tires, drivetrain parts, and batteries
Nitro Engine sound, fuel stops, tuning, heat, and a more mechanical ownership experience Break-in, tuning, cleaning, fuel, starting equipment, noise, and greater skill requirements

There is no universal rule that electric is always faster or nitro is always more powerful. Speed depends on the complete model, motor or engine, gearing, battery or fuel setup, tires, and surface.

2WD versus 4WD

4WD generally makes it easier to put power down on grass, loose dirt, gravel, and uneven terrain. It is more forgiving when the driver applies throttle in a turn. The trade-off is additional drivetrain complexity, more rotating parts, and more maintenance points.

2WD is often lighter, mechanically simpler, and predictable on prepared surfaces. It can also be the preferred layout for some forms of racing. The Losi Mini-B is a 2WD buggy, while the Maxx, Typhon, TRX-4, and SCX24 use 4WD configurations.

The detailed recommendations

Best overall: Traxxas Maxx 4×4 VXL, model 89076-4

Best for: Adults and experienced teenagers who want a fast outdoor basher that can handle more than a smooth driveway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original Maxx is the most balanced 2022 recommendation. Its compact 1/10-scale footprint is easier to store and transport than a larger extreme-performance truck, while its 4WD chassis, VXL brushless system, and 4S capability give it substantially more performance than a small brushed model. It is suitable for open dirt, short grass, packed surfaces, and jumps when driven within the limits of the terrain and the driver.

The original model’s owner’s manual identifies a 55-plus-mph capability for model 89076-4. A later Traxxas Maxx product listing advertised 60-plus mph for a subsequent version or listing. Those figures should not be merged: the battery, gearing, surface, and model revision all matter. The advertised top speed is a manufacturer claim, not a promise of the speed you will see on grass or rough dirt.

Included: The assembled vehicle and radio system.

Required extras: A compatible 3S or 4S LiPo battery, LiPo-capable charger, and a safe charging setup. Traxxas explicitly states that the battery and charger are sold separately. You should also budget for spare body clips, tires, suspension arms, driveshafts, and other crash parts.

Strengths: High performance, 4WD traction, compact size, strong upgrade and replacement-part support, and a broad range of outdoor uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weaknesses: High first-day cost once the battery and charger are added; potentially expensive crash damage; and too much speed for small yards, crowded areas, or inexperienced young drivers.

Maintenance burden: Moderate. Inspect the vehicle after each hard run, remove grass and dirt, check wheel nuts and screws, and look for bent suspension or damaged driveshafts.

2022 price context: The Maxx was a roughly $570-class vehicle and radio package in the 2022 market reference used for this guide, before the battery and charger. Treat that figure as period context rather than a universal MSRP. The added battery, charger, charging equipment, and first crash parts make the practical ready-to-drive budget materially higher.

Do not buy it if: You want a complete package with no accessory shopping, have only indoor space, want slow technical crawling, or are unwilling to learn basic repairs.

Verify that a listing is the original 89076-4 model by checking the original Maxx manual and the exact part number. Traxxas’ later Maxx product page should not be assumed to describe the 2022 SKU.

Best compact and complete package: Losi Mini-B 1/16 brushed RTR, LOS01016

Best for: Beginners, small driveways, basements, indoor tracks, and buyers who want a genuine hobby-grade vehicle without the cost or space requirements of a full-size basher.

The Mini-B is a small 2WD racing buggy, not an all-terrain monster truck. Its compact dimensions, aluminum chassis, oil-filled shocks, and proportional controls make it more substantial than a toy-grade car. It works particularly well on smooth indoor flooring, pavement, short packed surfaces, and small tracks. It is less forgiving than a 4WD truck on long grass, loose gravel, deep dirt, and uneven ground.

The brushed 2022-era RTR includes a 650mAh 2S LiPo battery, USB charger, 2.4GHz radio, and four transmitter batteries. That is its major advantage over the Maxx and Typhon: a buyer can normally open the box and begin driving without first selecting a battery connector, charger, or LiPo storage setup.

1/14 Brushless RC Cars for Adults Fast 50+ mph, RC Trucks 4x4 Offroad Waterproof, Electric Powered High Speed Remote Control Car, Fast Extreme All Terrain RC Truggy with 3S Battery for Snow Sand
  • RTR Built for Extreme Speed Bashing: Rugged chassis components, including steel differential outdrives and metal gearbox internals, durable steel universal drive shaft, a heavy-duty drivetrain, and more contribute to unstoppable bashing performance. The composite front bumper lets you fearlessly tackle almost anything that stands in your way.
  • Aluminum Alloy Chassis: Made of 6061 aluminum, the laser-etched chassis plate with a metal center body support and strong composite brace for maximum durability. Designed to resist impacts and minimize damage, its reinforced and upgraded chassis ensures it can handle the toughest terrains, offering up to 50% longer durability than typical models.
  • Brushless Extreme Speed Truggy: Hobby 2852 4200KV, 4 pole high-torque motor with metal heatsink. Waterproof receiver and 45A ESC (compatible 2S/3S battery) make this car more potential and upgradeable.
  • Release the Monster: This 4x4 RC car can reach an amazing speed of fast 50+ mph (80 km/h), rocketing from 0 to 80 km/h in mere seconds thanks to its 3S power. Dual batteries push your fun to the limit with an incredible 44 minutes of extended playtime!
  • All-terrain: Multi-terrain airless style tires with a diameter of 111mm are suitable for running on grass, gravel and dirt roads. The extra paddle tires easily conquer extreme terrain such as sand, snow, mud.

Strengths: Low entry complexity, compact size, oil-filled shocks, repairable hobby-grade construction, and lower likely running costs than a large brushless basher.

Weaknesses: 2WD traction, short runtime from its small battery, limited rough-terrain capability, and less excitement for buyers seeking large jumps or 50-mph driving.

Maintenance burden: Low to moderate. Small vehicles still collect dirt and need screw, wheel, gear, and bearing checks, but the brushed system is less demanding than a high-power brushless setup.

2022 price context: A contemporaneous retailer listing placed the brushed RTR at approximately $159.99. The price was a retailer reference, not a universal price guarantee. With the battery and charger included, it was one of the clearest low-complexity entries into hobby-grade RC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official LOS01016 specification page is important because some retailers use “Mini-B” without distinguishing the brushed and brushless versions. Losi’s page indicates that the brushed model is no longer a current product, so availability in 2026 may depend on remaining stock or used listings.

Brushless mini upgrade: Losi Mini-B brushless, LOS01024T2

Best for: Buyers who like the Mini-B’s small footprint but want more acceleration and speed.

This is a later and substantially different Mini-B, not the 2022 brushed LOS01016. The brushless model uses a 6000Kv motor/ESC combination, a metal-gear transmission, and a 2S Smart battery and charger. Losi advertises approximately 30 mph for this version.

Its transmitter provides throttle limiting at 50%, 75%, and 100%, which is useful for learning or for younger, supervised drivers. The model remains a small 2WD buggy, however; more power does not turn it into a grass truck or a 4WD basher.

See the official LOS01024T2 listing before buying. Its later listed price of approximately $229.99 should not be substituted for the 2022 brushed model’s $159.99 retailer reference.

Best crawler and scale trail truck: Traxxas TRX-4

Best for: Technical trails, rocks, roots, ledges, mud, and realistic low-speed driving.

The full-featured TRX-4 is the strongest 2022 choice for crawling because it is designed around control and obstacle clearance rather than top speed. Its notable equipment includes:

  • Portal axles that raise the differential housings and improve ground clearance.
  • Remote-locking differentials for changing traction behavior from the transmitter.
  • A selectable high/low transmission for faster trail travel and slow technical sections.
  • A steel ladder frame for a scale-truck chassis layout.
  • Oil-filled aluminum shocks.
  • A stated steering angle of approximately 45 degrees.

Those features make the TRX-4 capable over obstacles that would stop a conventional road car or buggy. They do not make it a fast basher. The portal axles, low-range gearing, and locking differentials solve crawling problems, not high-speed handling problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Included and required: Check the exact body and RTR package for the battery and charger. Do not assume every TRX-4 listing contains the same accessories.

Strengths: Excellent low-speed control, realistic scale appearance, strong obstacle performance, and a large ecosystem of bodies, tires, and accessories.

Weaknesses: Heavy and expensive compared with a simple buggy; slow by design; and over-equipped for a buyer who only wants speed.

Maintenance burden: Moderate. Clean mud and grit from the axles and drivetrain, inspect linkages and driveshafts, and dry the model after wet running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important version warning: The TRX-4 Sport is not simply the same vehicle with a different body. Traxxas describes the Sport as having a simpler configuration; locking differentials and the high/low transmission are not included in the same standard form and require optional upgrades. Compare the TRX-4 feature article with the TRX-Series guide before assuming a Sport has the full TRX-4 equipment.

Best nitro monster truck: Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3

Best for: Experienced users who specifically want nitro fuel, engine sound, tuning, heat, and mechanical involvement.

The T-Maxx 3.3 remains a legitimate choice for someone who sees RC as a small-engine hobby rather than a convenient electric toy. Its 4WD monster-truck layout, two-speed transmission, and nitro engine provide a very different experience from a brushless electric model.

It is not the default beginner recommendation. Ownership includes fuel, engine break-in, tuning, cleaning, starting equipment, and attention to operating temperature. The manufacturer’s manual warns that the model is intended for experienced users and should not be operated in water, mud, snow, or wet grass because moisture can damage the engine and electronics. Fuel and exhaust also create noise, heat, and location restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengths: Authentic nitro sound and smell, long driving sessions with fuel refills, mechanical adjustability, 4WD traction, and strong enthusiast appeal.

Weaknesses: More difficult starting procedure, fuel cost, tuning sensitivity, cleaning after use, hot components, noise, and less convenient storage than an electric model.

Maintenance burden: High compared with the electric recommendations.

Read the T-Maxx 3.3 manual before buying. Its safety and wet-weather warnings are central buying information, not minor footnotes. This is a vehicle for a driver who wants the nitro process—not simply the fastest way to drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fast buggy alternative: Arrma Typhon 4×4 3S BLX

Best for: Fast dirt driving, packed surfaces, jumps, and buyers who prefer a low, stable buggy to a tall monster truck.

The Typhon 3S BLX offers a 1/8-scale 4WD buggy platform, brushless electronics, waterproof electronics, and a manufacturer-rated 50-plus-mph capability. Its lower center of gravity and buggy body make it feel more planted than a monster truck on smooth dirt and pavement. It is a strong alternative to the Maxx for someone who values fast off-road handling over maximum ground clearance.

The 50-plus-mph claim refers to an appropriate 3S LiPo battery and suitable conditions. The vehicle and radio do not by themselves create that speed. Battery and charger were not included, and the required shopping list may also include a charging bag, transmitter batteries, spare tires, and suspension parts.

Strengths: Stable buggy handling, 1/8 scale, 4WD traction, high speed, and waterproof electronics according to the manufacturer’s product information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weaknesses: It is less useful than a monster truck in tall grass or on rough obstacles; high-speed crashes are costly; and the original 2022 SKU is no longer available as a current product listing.

Maintenance burden: Moderate.

Check the exact product number. The black Typhon 3S listing is ARA102696, while an older red listing is ARA102722. The ARA102696 page documents the 3S system and included/excluded equipment, and the ARA102722 page shows the older product’s discontinued status. Do not treat this as a current-stock recommendation without checking remaining inventory and parts support.

Best tiny crawler: Axial SCX24

Best for: Apartments, desks, basements, indoor obstacle courses, camping, and low-speed backyard trail driving.

The SCX24 solves the space problem better than any large crawler. Its 1/24 scale, steel frame rails, worm-drive axles, and full-time 4WD allow it to navigate small obstacles indoors and outdoors. It is slow, but that is the point: the driver works out lines, tire placement, and throttle control instead of simply holding the trigger open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SCX24 Deadbolt RTR listing includes the vehicle, radio, 2S battery, USB charger, and transmitter batteries, so there is nothing else required to begin driving. Electronics are described as water-resistant rather than an invitation to submerge the vehicle.

Strengths: Small footprint, complete RTR package, low-speed control, indoor usability, full-time 4WD, and relatively approachable ownership.

Weaknesses: Very slow, easy to hang up on obstacles that a larger crawler would clear, and less satisfying for anyone seeking jumps or speed.

Maintenance burden: Low. Remove dust and hair from the axles, check screws and wheel nuts, and dry the model after damp use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  • Monster Jam Official Grave Digger Remote Control Monster Truck, 1:24 Scale, 2.4 GHz, for Ages 4 and Up

Use the exact SKU AXI90081 when researching the Deadbolt. The official product page documents the RTR contents, while Axial’s SCX24 platform page provides broader platform context. Several 2022-era SCX24 body and color variants may be discontinued by 2026, so verify the exact listing rather than assuming every historical version is still available.

Best build project: Tamiya TT-02

Best for: A buyer who wants to assemble, understand, and customize an RC car rather than drive immediately after opening the box.

The TT-02 is an accessible 1/10-scale shaft-drive 4WD on-road chassis. It is a good foundation for learning how differentials, suspension, steering, gearing, and body fitment work. The broad selection of Tamiya bodies also makes it attractive to readers who want an actual road-car shape rather than a truck or crawler.

The TT-02 Type-S improves the chassis with more setup-oriented equipment, but it remains a kit. Depending on the exact package, the buyer must supply a motor, ESC, radio transmitter and receiver, steering servo, battery, charger, body, and polycarbonate paint. Tamiya’s standard TT-02 kit is similarly not an RTR car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best terrain: Pavement and prepared surfaces. The low-clearance on-road design is not intended for tall grass, rocks, mud, or large jumps.

Strengths: Assembly experience, simple 4WD layout, body choice, upgrade potential, and an easy path into on-road hobby driving.

Weaknesses: It is not ready to drive; the final cost depends on the electronics and body chosen; and it is a poor choice for rough off-road terrain.

Maintenance burden: Moderate, with the initial build being the largest time commitment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Tamiya’s TT-02 Type-S listing and standard TT-02 listing for the exact completion requirements.

Best competition-oriented nitro option: Mugen MTX7

Best for: Experienced club racers who already understand nitro touring cars, chassis setup, and race preparation.

The Mugen MTX7 is a serious 1/10 nitro touring-car chassis with competition-oriented construction and adjustable geometry. It belongs in a competition-kit category, not in a general “best RC car for a family” category.

Mugen identifies numerous required additions: a 12-class engine, exhaust and manifold components, 2-channel radio, receiver, two servos, receiver battery, wheels, tires, body, paint, fuel, starter equipment, and setup tools. The chassis kit therefore cannot be compared directly with a complete Losi Mini-B or SCX24 RTR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reported 2022 price near $670 should be treated as retail or reseller context rather than a verified manufacturer MSRP. The actual ready-to-race cost can be substantially higher once the engine, radio, servos, body, tires, fuel, starter, and replacement parts are included.

Strengths: Race-focused design, adjustability, and a serious platform for organized nitro touring competition.

Weaknesses: High total cost, extensive assembly and setup, nitro maintenance, and poor suitability for casual backyard driving.

Use Mugen’s official MTX7 specification page as the equipment checklist. It is not an all-in-one vehicle simply because a retailer lists one chassis price.

Losi Mini-B brushless LOS01024T2 Later listing around $229.99; not the 2022 brushed price 2S Smart battery and charger included in the listed RTR package Optional second battery, tires, and small crash parts
Arrma Typhon 3S Varied by 2022 retailer and now-discontinued SKU Add an appropriate 2S/3S-compatible battery according to the manual, LiPo charger, and charging setup; the 50-plus-mph claim is a 3S configuration Budget for the battery, charger, transmitter batteries if absent, charging equipment, tires, and suspension parts
Traxxas TRX-4 Varied by body and RTR version Verify whether the particular package includes a battery and charger Allow for battery/charger if absent, plus crawler tires, links, bearings, and cleaning supplies
Axial SCX24 RTR Varied by 2022 body and color variant The AXI90081 package includes the vehicle, radio, 2S battery, USB charger, and transmitter batteries No required startup accessories; budget mainly for optional tires, bodies, and small replacement parts
Tamiya TT-02 Type-S Kit price varies by retailer and specification Add motor, ESC, radio, steering servo, battery, charger, body, and paint as required by the kit The complete ready-to-drive cost can be several times the bare kit price depending on electronics and body choices
Mugen MTX7 Reported near $670 for the chassis kit in 2022 Add engine, exhaust, radio, two servos, receiver battery, body, wheels, tires, fuel, starter, and tools A complete race-ready build may exceed $1,000; do not compare the kit price with RTR prices

For any used or discontinued model, ask the seller specifically whether the battery, charger, radio, body, and transmitter batteries are present and working. “RTR” does not always mean “everything needed is in the box.”

Electric versus nitro: which ownership experience fits?

Consideration Electric Nitro
Convenience Charge a battery, switch on, and drive Fill fuel, start the engine, tune it, and allow it to warm up
Noise Electric motor and gear noise; generally easier for residential use Much louder; location and neighbor restrictions matter
Maintenance Clean dirt, inspect hardware, monitor batteries, and replace crash parts All of the electric maintenance plus break-in, tuning, fuel-system care, heat management, and after-run cleaning
Running cost Battery replacement and charging electricity; tires and parts are common wear items Fuel, glow or starting equipment, engine maintenance, and parts
Weather Some models have waterproof or water-resistant electronics, but wet running still requires drying and inspection Wet conditions can damage the engine and electronics and are specifically restricted in the T-Maxx manual
Mechanical involvement Lower, especially with a brushed RTR High; tuning and engine behavior are part of the appeal
Best reason to choose it Fast, repeatable, and convenient driving Sound, fuel, engine tuning, and traditional RC involvement

Nitro is not simply “faster electric.” A T-Maxx makes sense when the driver wants the nitro experience. If the goal is reliable speed with the least preparation, a brushless electric vehicle is usually the more appropriate direction.

How terrain changes the recommendation

  • Smooth pavement: The Tamiya TT-02 is the natural build-oriented choice. The Mini-B also works well where its small tires and 2WD layout have adequate grip.
  • Short grass and packed dirt: The Maxx is the most versatile recommendation. The Typhon is effective on smooth, packed surfaces but has less clearance for rough grass.
  • Loose gravel and jumps: Favor a 4WD basher such as the Maxx. Use an open area and expect tires and suspension components to be wear items.
  • Rocks, roots, and ledges: Choose the TRX-4. Its portal axles, low range, and locking differentials are designed for this job.
  • Indoor flooring or a small apartment: Choose the brushed Mini-B for faster driving or the SCX24 for obstacle-course crawling.
  • Wet ground: Check the exact manufacturer wording. “Waterproof” or “water-resistant electronics” does not mean indefinite submersion or maintenance-free storage. Dry and clean the vehicle after any wet run.
  • Residential neighborhoods: Electric is usually more practical. The T-Maxx’s exhaust, fuel, and noise make it unsuitable for many shared or densely populated spaces.

Safety and maintenance essentials

LiPo battery safety

  • Use a charger and battery combination approved for the model and battery chemistry.
  • Follow the battery and charger manual for balance charging, storage voltage, charging rate, and inspection.
  • Never charge a LiPo unattended or continue using a battery that is swollen, punctured, hot, or otherwise damaged.
  • Use the recommended charging setup or bag where appropriate, but remember that a charging bag does not make unattended charging safe.
  • Disconnect the battery after driving and store it as directed by the battery manufacturer.

Before and after each run

  1. Check wheel nuts, body clips, suspension arms, driveshafts, steering links, and visible screws.
  2. Confirm that the throttle and steering respond correctly before entering the driving area.
  3. Keep fingers, clothing, hair, and loose objects away from rotating wheels and gears.
  4. Keep high-speed vehicles away from roads, people, pets, windows, and property.
  5. Allow the motor, ESC, battery, and—on nitro models—the engine and exhaust to cool before handling.
  6. Remove grass, stones, mud, and hair from the drivetrain.
  7. After wet running, dry the vehicle and inspect bearings, gears, axles, and electrical connections. Water-resistant electronics are not a substitute for maintenance.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying a vehicle that cannot drive on day one

The Maxx, Typhon, TT-02, and MTX7 require different combinations of batteries, chargers, electronics, fuel, or starting equipment. Before ordering, create two columns: included and not included. For the Maxx and Typhon, the battery and charger are the most common omissions. For the TT-02 and MTX7, the omissions are much more extensive.

Confusing model revisions

Retailers often shorten names to “Maxx,” “Mini-B,” “TRX-4,” or “Typhon.” Always match the model number:

  • Traxxas Maxx: 89076-4 for the original 2022 model.
  • Losi Mini-B brushed: LOS01016.
  • Losi Mini-B brushless: LOS01024T2.
  • Arrma Typhon 3S: ARA102696 or older ARA102722.
  • Axial SCX24 Deadbolt: AXI90081.

A later model may have a different motor, ESC, battery connector, radio system, body, charger, speed claim, or warranty. Do not use a current product page as proof that the exact product was available in 2022.

Expecting every 4WD model to be an all-terrain vehicle

Four-wheel drive improves traction, but it does not erase ground-clearance, tire, suspension, or body-design limits. The TT-02 is a 4WD on-road chassis; it is not a grass-and-rock truck. The TRX-4 is highly capable over rocks but is deliberately slow. The Typhon is fast and stable but lower than the Maxx.

Buying a crawler for speed

Product images of a crawler climbing an obstacle can make it look dramatic, but crawling is a low-speed, high-control activity. Buy the TRX-4 or SCX24 because you enjoy picking lines and overcoming obstacles—not because you expect a speed contest.

Giving a fast brushless model to an inexperienced child

Large brushless vehicles can reach speeds that exceed the available space and the driver’s reaction time. Start with a suitable open area, reduced power where the manufacturer supports it, and adult supervision. The brushless Mini-B is easier to manage because its transmitter offers 50%, 75%, and 100% throttle settings, but it still requires responsible operation.

What the prominent 2022 list got right—and what it left out

A CNET article dated December 15, 2022, identified the Traxxas Maxx as its overall pick, the Losi Mini-B 1/16 as runner-up, the Mugen MTX7 as a “money is no object” choice, the TRX-4 as its crawler pick, and the T-Maxx 3.3 as its monster-truck pick. The category framework remains useful; the vehicles represent distinct types of RC ownership. The period list is preserved in references including this bibliographic citation and a secondary reproduction.

The weakness is that the list does not establish a transparent test method, controlled speed or durability testing, total ownership cost, or a consistent distinction between RTR vehicles and competition kits. The Mugen MTX7 is the clearest example: it may be an excellent competition chassis, but it is a poor general recommendation if the reader believes “best” means a complete vehicle that can be driven immediately.

A better buying decision accounts for use case, terrain, power system, 2WD or 4WD layout, completion level, included equipment, speed, repairability, parts availability, noise, footprint, safety, and maintenance.

Availability in 2026: verify before buying a 2022 model

This guide is specifically about the 2022 market, not a claim that every model remains in production. As of August 10, 2026, the original Arrma Typhon 3S is listed as no longer available, and the brushed Mini-B and some older SCX24 variants may also be discontinued or difficult to source new. A remaining-stock or used listing can still be worthwhile, but check:

  • Whether replacement arms, gears, tires, bodies, and electronics are still available.
  • Whether the battery connector and charger are included.
  • Whether the battery is swollen, damaged, or too old to use safely.
  • Whether the exact radio transmitter and receiver are present.
  • Whether a later revision is being substituted for the original model.
  • Whether the seller is quoting a current price, an archived 2022 price, or a used-market price.

Replacement models can differ in battery connector, charger, radio system, body, motor, ESC, price, warranty, and support. For a current purchase, use the historical model numbers in this guide as identification references—not as a reason to ignore a newer equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Traxxas Maxx a good first hobby-grade RC car?

It can be a good first hobby-grade model for an adult or experienced teenager who has open outdoor space and accepts the cost of a battery, charger, and crash parts. It is not an ideal first model for a young or inexperienced driver because the original 89076-4 can reach a manufacturer-stated 55-plus mph with the appropriate setup.

Do RC cars include the battery and charger?

It depends on the exact SKU. The 2022 Losi Mini-B brushed RTR and Axial SCX24 Deadbolt RTR included a battery and charger. The Traxxas Maxx and Arrma Typhon 3S required a separately purchased battery and charger. Tamiya TT-02 and Mugen MTX7 kits require substantially more equipment.

What is the difference between the Traxxas TRX-4 and TRX-4 Sport?

The full-featured TRX-4 includes equipment such as portal axles, remote-locking differentials, and a selectable high/low transmission. The TRX-4 Sport uses a simpler configuration and does not include the same locking-differential and high/low-transmission equipment as standard. Check the exact version before buying.

Is nitro better than electric RC?

Neither is universally better. Electric is quieter, easier to start, and more convenient. Nitro is better for someone who specifically wants engine sound, fuel, tuning, heat, and mechanical involvement. Nitro also requires more maintenance and is less suitable for wet conditions and densely populated areas.

Can I still buy these 2022 RC models in 2026?

Some may be available as remaining stock or used vehicles, but the original Arrma Typhon 3S is listed as no longer available, and some Mini-B and SCX24 variants are discontinued or difficult to find new. Verify the exact SKU and the availability of replacement parts before purchasing.

The Bottom Line

Buy the original Traxxas Maxx 4×4 VXL 89076-4 if you want the broadest mix of speed, 4WD traction, outdoor versatility, and upgrade potential. Buy the brushed Losi Mini-B if you want a smaller, cheaper, more complete first hobby-grade package. Choose the TRX-4 or SCX24 for crawling, the T-Maxx 3.3 for a deliberate nitro hobby, the TT-02 for building, and the Mugen MTX7 only for a serious competition project. The correct choice depends less on the highest advertised speed than on where you will drive, what you are willing to maintain, and whether the box contains everything required to start.
