For a practical used electric SUV shortlist, start with the 2022 models selected by Edmunds: BMW iX, Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Kona Electric, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model X, Rivian R1S, Chevrolet Bolt EUV and Kia EV6. That list is a useful set of candidates—not a guarantee that any particular used SUV is a good buy. Match the vehicle’s exact trim and verified battery condition to your budget, passenger and cargo needs, charging access and typical driving.
The shortlist reflects Edmunds’ January 28, 2025 comparison of 2022 model-year electric SUVs, ranked by Edmunds rating with average price used as a tiebreaker. It is not a current ranking of every model year or a statement of today’s local prices. A used SUV’s condition, history and remaining warranty can matter more than its place on an editorial list.
How to use this 2022-model-year shortlist
Edmunds reported both EPA range estimates and results from its own EV Range Test. Those figures describe new-vehicle estimates or specific tested configurations; they are not promises about a used vehicle’s present-day range. For any listing, check the exact model year, trim and drivetrain, then ask for a vehicle-level battery-capacity or health report and a tested range result.
Use the models below as a decision map. Edmunds’ order was based on its ratings, with average price breaking ties; it should not be treated as a universal ranking for every buyer. A complementary buying guide from Recharged identifies the Model Y as a sensible all-around starting point, the R1S as a stronger match for three-row utility, and the EV6, Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi e-tron as targeted options for buyers prioritizing sportiness, comfort, charging behavior or luxury. These are different editorial perspectives, not one combined scoring system.

Set your priorities before comparing listings
- Budget: Compare actual local asking prices and available inventory, not an old average or an editorial ranking.
- Space: Count regular passengers, child seats and cargo. Test the rear seats and cargo area with the people and gear you expect to carry.
- Driving: Estimate ordinary daily mileage and the longest trips you take. Build in a margin for weather, speed, elevation, tires and cabin heating or cooling.
- Charging: Check whether home Level 2 charging is feasible and whether the vehicle’s port, included adapters and route-charging options suit your routine.
- Ownership cost: Get insurance, financing and tire-cost estimates, and account for repairs, charging setup and any warranty coverage that remains.
The 10 used electric SUVs on Edmunds’ 2022 list
BMW iX — a five-passenger luxury option
The iX is a five-passenger luxury SUV on Edmunds’ list. In Edmunds’ test of a particular configuration, it traveled 377 miles, compared with that configuration’s listed EPA range of 305–324 miles. That result is a publication test, not a used-car range guarantee. Confirm the exact version and condition of the vehicle you are considering, and weigh luxury-car repair and insurance costs in your ownership budget.
Kia Niro EV — an included candidate to compare against your needs
Edmunds included the 2022 Niro EV among its ten highest-rated electric SUVs in the comparison. The comparison details provided here do not establish a specific range-test result or model-specific tradeoff for it. Check the range and equipment for the exact listing, and judge its passenger and cargo space in person rather than inferring fit from its place on the list.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 — comfort and fast charging, with visibility and cargo compromises
Edmunds praised the Ioniq 5’s comfort, features and quick fast charging. It also identified cargo space and rear visibility as drawbacks. Those are reasons to inspect the actual vehicle and sit in the rear seats before buying; do not assume all trims, equipment or charging conditions perform identically.
Hyundai Kona Electric — a smaller, more affordable long-range candidate
Edmunds characterized the Kona Electric as more affordable and long-range for its size, while noting tighter rear-seat and cargo room and the absence of all-wheel drive. It may merit a look when price and range matter more than extra room, but verify the specific vehicle’s drivetrain, range and space in person.

Ford Mustang Mach-E — sporty driving and extended-range configurations
Edmunds highlighted the Mach-E’s sporty driving character and the availability of extended-range configurations. Range depends on the exact year, trim and drivetrain, so confirm the configuration from the vehicle records and compare its estimate with a battery assessment for that individual SUV.
Tesla Model Y — a broad used-market starting point
Edmunds noted the Model Y’s broad used-market availability and passenger and cargo practicality. It also flagged build-quality concerns on some units and the absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Inspect panel fit and finish, controls and features on the specific car rather than assuming consistency across listings. A Recharged buying guide separately describes it as a sensible all-around starting point, not the automatic best choice for every household.
Tesla Model X — a three-row option with a space compromise
The Model X is one of the two three-row choices identified in the shortlist, but Edmunds noted that its third row is limited. If you need the extra seats regularly, bring all intended passengers to the inspection and check access, legroom and cargo space with the seats in the positions you would use.
Rivian R1S — a three-row utility candidate
The R1S is the other three-row choice highlighted in the comparison. Recharged’s buying guide treats it as a better fit for three-row utility, while the Edmunds comparison flags service access as something to check. Before buying, identify how service and repairs would be handled where you live and verify the vehicle’s service history.

Chevrolet Bolt EUV — an affordability-focused candidate
Edmunds described the Bolt EUV as affordable, with limited cargo area and slower fast charging. It can be worth comparing if the price and day-to-day fit work for you, but test the cargo space against your actual needs and make sure its charging behavior fits your route and schedule.
Kia EV6 — a sportier alternative with less room than the Ioniq 5
Edmunds characterized the EV6 as sportier than the Ioniq 5, but with less cargo room and a less smooth ride. Recharged also identifies it as a targeted choice for sportiness. Drive the exact vehicle on roads similar to your regular routes and compare the cargo area directly with other candidates.
How to judge range and battery condition
Ask for the battery’s measured capacity or health and an estimated real-world range for the actual vehicle. An odometer reading alone cannot tell you how much usable capacity remains. Compare the result with the original range for that exact year, trim and drivetrain, while accounting for weather, speed, tires, elevation and cabin heating or cooling.
Published battery-retention averages provide context, not a forecast for the car in front of you. In its September 2026 guide, Recharged reported average remaining battery capacity of 93.9% and median capacity of 94.9% across 2,242 Recharged Score inspections. These are sample-wide inspection results, not model-specific expectations. Cars.com’s analysis of listings as of April 2026 reported that the average EV retained 97% of its range after three years and 95% after five years; those analysis figures likewise do not establish an individual SUV’s condition.

As the Recharged Experience Center Team put it: “We don’t want shoppers guessing about battery condition from the odometer. A Recharged Score inspection tests remaining capacity and estimated real-world range so similar-looking SUVs can be compared using the condition of their actual batteries.” Recharged updated that statement on September 22, 2026.

Local asking prices and supply change over time, so compare listings for the same year, trim, drivetrain, mileage and condition in your market. As a broad marketplace benchmark—not a quote for any particular SUV—Recharged reported a $27,297 median retail price and a $29,901 average across 1,796 EVs it sold during the trailing 12 months described in its September 2026 guide. Neither figure is specific to SUVs or a substitute for current local listings.
For another point of reference, Cars.com’s analysis of listings as of April 2026 included Audi e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Kona EV and Nissan Ariya variants among its under-$30,000 options. That listing analysis is a dated market snapshot, not a guarantee of availability or price where you live.
iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$40,000 rankings start with the Tesla Model X and include the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E. Its rankings use reliability, value retention and safety, drawing on data from more than 12 million new and used vehicles and NHTSA safety ratings. That method differs from Edmunds’ 2022-model-year ratings; use each ranking for its stated purpose rather than merging them into a single score.

Check charging fit before you buy
- Confirm the charging-port type on the exact vehicle and which adapters, if any, are included.
- Check compatibility with the charging stations and routes you expect to use, including any adapter or account requirements.
- Determine whether a 240-volt Level 2 home installation is feasible at your home, and get installation costs before treating home charging as a given.
- Compare charging behavior against your routine. A vehicle that works for daily home charging may be less convenient for frequent long-distance trips.
Complete a vehicle-level inspection
- Review the VIN and history. Request service records and check for open recalls. Confirm the model year, trim, drivetrain and in-service date.
- Verify battery and range evidence. Ask for a capacity or health report and a tested range estimate for that vehicle, not just an odometer reading or the model’s original EPA estimate.
- Test the equipment. Check software, keys, mobile-app access, cameras and driver-assistance functions. Make sure the features you expect are present and working.
- Inspect wear and fit. Look over the tires and underbody, and try every passenger and cargo area you will use. Take a test drive to assess ride, visibility and controls.
- Price the full ownership picture. Get insurance and financing quotes and account for tires, repairs and charging installation alongside the purchase price.
- Check remaining warranty by VIN. Ask the automaker to confirm coverage for the specific vehicle. Warranty terms depend on model year, mileage, in-service date and vehicle history; do not assume a universal battery-warranty term.
Can a used electric SUV still receive a federal tax credit?
No federal used clean vehicle credit is available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, according to the IRS. A shopper acquiring a used SUV in 2026 should not count on that credit. Older buying guides may describe eligibility rules that applied before the cutoff.
Choose the best match, then let condition break the tie
For a two-row all-around candidate, compare the Model Y with the Ioniq 5, Mach-E, Kona Electric and EV6 according to your space, driving and charging priorities. For regular three-row use, examine the R1S and Model X in person, paying particular attention to third-row usability and local service access. If luxury or price is the main priority, compare the iX, Bolt EUV and Niro EV against actual local listings and ownership costs rather than assuming that a category label guarantees value.
When two SUVs meet the same use case, favor the one with stronger vehicle-specific battery evidence, documented service history, a clean recall status, working equipment and a more favorable total cost. An editorial ranking cannot establish the condition of an individual used vehicle.
