The Mercedes-Benz S-Class leads Carbuyer’s UK-market luxury-car ranking for 2025, with the BMW i7 second. That order is one publisher’s editorial judgment—not a universal verdict: Autocar’s later 2025 list put the i7 first and the S-Class second. The right choice depends on whether you value driver engagement, passenger comfort, usable technology, electric range or SUV practicality most.
How to read this 2025 ranking
The ten cars below follow Carbuyer’s ranking, published on 10 December 2024, for the 2025 model-year editorial frame. It is UK-oriented and spans luxury saloons, SUVs and an electric SUV; it is not a like-for-like test of ten cars. Equipment, powertrains, range figures and prices vary by trim and market, and the source reviews do not establish a common test basis for every model.
There is no single agreed order. Autocar’s separate list, published on 25 July 2025, ranked the BMW i7 first, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class second, the BMW iX third and the Porsche Cayenne fourth. Its criteria included design, interior, performance, ride and handling, and costs. That different result reflects editorial priorities and body-style choices rather than a direct contradiction over one objective measure.

The trade-offs are a high purchase price and running costs, plus augmented-reality features that Carbuyer found laggy. The source gives inconsistent plug-in-hybrid electric-range figures—68 miles in its article and 62 miles in its pros list—so neither should be treated as a reliable trim-specific specification without checking the relevant market model.

2. BMW i7 — best for electric rear-seat luxury
The i7 pairs a quiet electric powertrain with generous rear-seat space and strong acceleration. Carbuyer highlights an optional 31-inch Theatre Screen and reports 449 bhp for the eDrive 50 and 651 bhp for the M70, as well as a 343–387-mile range band. Those figures depend on version and should not be assumed to describe every i7.
Autocar independently praised the cabin technology and ride and handling. It reported a 385-mile official range claim but achieved 264 miles in its own test; the test result belongs to Autocar’s conditions, not every trim, route or driver. The contrast is a useful reminder to consider the stated test basis when comparing EV range.

3. Range Rover — best for spacious, high-end SUV comfort
Carbuyer’s case for the Range Rover centers on its long-wheelbase rear-seat space, air suspension and broad engine range. Optional reclining massage seats strengthen its appeal for buyers who often travel as passengers or need a large, luxurious SUV.

Carbuyer noted that there was no electric version at launch and that purchase prices are high. Check the precise model, powertrain and equipment available in your market rather than assuming the launch range applies to every later configuration.

4. Mercedes-Benz EQS — best for an electric flagship saloon
The EQS is Carbuyer’s electric alternative to a conventional Mercedes flagship: an aerodynamic shape, a sumptuous cabin and extensive technology. The publication reports a 450-mile range, but that figure needs to be checked against the exact trim, market and test standard before being used as a current specification.
Its screen-heavy dashboard may not suit drivers who prefer physical controls, and Carbuyer describes its ride as firmer than the S-Class. Those differences matter if cabin calm and intuitive controls rank above feature count.

5. Range Rover Sport — best for a more agile luxury SUV
Carbuyer describes the Range Rover Sport as smaller, lighter and more agile than the full-size Range Rover, while retaining comfort and luxury. It is the more driver-focused direction for someone drawn to the Range Rover experience but wanting a less imposing vehicle.

For a sense of the performance range, Carbuyer describes the SV version with a twin-turbocharged V8 producing 616 bhp. That is a version-specific figure, not a specification for every Sport.

6. Lotus Eletre — best for an electric SUV with a performance edge
The fully electric Eletre combines a technology-forward cabin with quick, agile driving and good ride comfort, according to Carbuyer. The publisher notes that it is offered in five-seat and four-seat layouts, giving buyers a choice between a more conventional cabin arrangement and a more individual rear seating setup.
Carbuyer found the door-camera system awkward to use, and the four-seat layout reduces boot space. Before choosing that configuration, consider whether its rear-seat experience is worth the lost luggage capacity.

7. BMW X7 — best for seven-seat luxury
The X7’s strengths in Carbuyer’s review include seven seats, air suspension, composed road manners, electronic seat and tailgate functions, and dual 12.3-inch displays. It suits buyers who need the flexibility of a large three-row SUV without giving up a premium cabin.

Its size can be challenging on UK roads and in tight parking spaces. Carbuyer also cites a 395 bhp M50d and a 0–62 mph time of 5.4 seconds; because model-year and regional configurations matter, confirm that those figures apply to the specific X7 being considered.

8. Bentley Bentayga — best for craftsmanship and personalization
Carbuyer emphasizes the Bentayga’s handcrafted cabin, extensive personalization and powerful, engaging drive. It is aimed at buyers who place a premium on bespoke interior details as well as SUV performance.
Fuel consumption and purchase cost are notable compromises, and Carbuyer reports that the ride can shudder over some surfaces. If comfort is the priority, evaluate the exact wheel and suspension specification and the roads you regularly use.

9. Porsche Panamera — best for a luxury saloon that rewards the driver
The Panamera stands out for steering precision and grip. Carbuyer also notes hybrid choices, rear-seat screens and a hatchback layout that brings useful practicality. It is a strong fit if driving involvement and a flexible luggage opening matter as much as a traditional luxury-saloon feel.

Carbuyer says some rivals are more comfortable and refined, and the Panamera’s size can make maneuvering difficult. Porsche’s inclusion in the World Car Awards’ 2025 World Luxury Car category provides award context, not proof that it is the best choice for every buyer.

10. Rolls-Royce Cullinan — best for comfort-led ultra-luxury SUV travel
Carbuyer highlights the Cullinan’s V12 power, cabin and boot practicality, comfort and off-road ability. Its emphasis is on effortless, comfortable travel rather than outright speed, which makes it a distinct proposition from sportier luxury SUVs.
High running costs, costly options and the vehicle’s sheer size are the practical counterweights. It makes most sense when those compromises are acceptable and its particular approach to luxury is the priority.
Which ranking is more useful for your priorities?
Use the rankings as starting points, then match the car to the job it must do. A quiet rear cabin is not the same requirement as precise handling; a third row is not interchangeable with generous second-row space. Technology can make a cabin more capable, but controls that distract or feel awkward can detract from daily use.

- For chauffeured or rear-seat travel: compare the S-Class, i7 and long-wheelbase Range Rover in the exact rear-seat configuration you would buy.
- For a luxury SUV with sharper responses: consider the Range Rover Sport, Eletre or Panamera, while accounting for their different body styles and powertrains.
- For seven seats: the X7 is the entry in this ranking explicitly highlighted for seven-seat capacity; confirm usable space in the rearmost row for your passengers.
- For fully electric luxury: compare the i7, EQS and Eletre by the specific trim’s range basis, charging needs, seating layout and the routes you actually drive.
- For bespoke cabin craftsmanship: the Bentayga and Cullinan take different approaches, with the former emphasizing personalization and the latter prioritizing comfort-led travel.
Other publications may select different cars as well as reorder them. Cars.com named the 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70 its Best Luxury Car of 2025, citing 429 hp, 236 miles of estimated electric range and a $68,400–$75,200 starting-price range including destination. That is a U.S.-market award and price range, not an addition to Carbuyer’s UK top ten; the publications use different markets and selection methods.

What to check before choosing
- Test the seats you will use. If you regularly carry passengers, sit in the rear seats and assess entry, headroom, legroom and any screen or recliner equipment. A chauffeur-oriented cabin may not be the best use of money if you drive alone.
- Try the controls during a drive. Check whether the driver-assistance, camera and infotainment interfaces feel clear and responsive. A long feature list is less useful if key functions are distracting or unintuitive.
- Verify the precise trim and market specification. Confirm power output, seating, standard and optional equipment, and any cited range against the actual local model. Editorial reviews may refer to a different version or regional configuration.
- Evaluate EV range in context. Separate an official or publisher-quoted claim from an independent road-test result. Account for your usual journey, charging access and conditions instead of treating one range number as a guaranteed distance.
- Price ownership, not just purchase. Compare the local purchase price, running costs and option costs for the configurations you are considering. The ranking’s UK orientation does not supply current prices for every market.
- Check fit in daily use. Try parking, maneuvering and loading luggage, especially with the X7, Cullinan or other large SUVs. Seat count alone does not tell you whether the car’s footprint suits your roads and spaces.
