The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas gets a substantial redesign, with fresher styling, a reworked cabin and more technology. But Car and Driver’s road test found a tradeoff: despite gaining 13 horsepower, its tested Atlas was slower to 60 mph than the 2026 model it had tested. The new SUV did post better measured grip, braking and highway fuel economy, making the changes more than a styling exercise.
What’s new on the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas?
Volkswagen describes the 2027 Atlas as a redesigned three-row SUV. The exterior receives new front and rear lighting, including available dual LED light bars and illuminated logos. Car and Driver describes the front end as having double-stacked headlights and two illuminated lines, with a cross-body rear light signature. The Atlas moves to the MQB Evo platform but retains its 117.3-inch wheelbase. Its body is about 2.4 inches longer than before, primarily through slightly longer front and rear overhangs; width is unchanged and height is nearly the same.
The cabin has a different control layout, upgraded materials and more available comfort and driver-assistance features. Volkswagen says soft-touch surfaces are standard and real-wood decor, massaging front seats, expanded IQ.DRIVE, Park Assist and a generative-AI voice assistant are available. Availability depends on trim and market; these should not be read as standard equipment across the lineup. Volkswagen also says the redesign adds a front-center airbag.
Car and Driver reports that seat positions remain unchanged, so the larger exterior dimensions do not come from a longer wheelbase or a repositioned seating layout. The Atlas remains a family-oriented three-row SUV, with access to all three rows preserved.

How the redesigned cabin works
In Car and Driver’s U.S. trim descriptions, the base SE has a 12.9-inch central touchscreen and other trims get a 15.0-inch screen. A 10.3-inch configurable Digital Cockpit Pro display sits ahead of the driver. Volkswagen Canada separately describes a 12.9-inch standard infotainment screen and an available 15-inch screen for its market.
The shifter moves to the steering column, freeing console space for dual wireless phone chargers. The layout also keeps a physical volume knob. Temperature sliders remain below the infotainment display and provide numerical feedback. Volkswagen says dual wireless charging is part of the redesigned cabin; equipment can vary by trim.
A Driver Experience Dial handles drive-mode selection and “Atmospheres,” Volkswagen’s ambient-lighting presets. Together, the relocated shifter and revised console give the front cabin a different arrangement rather than simply adding a larger screen.

Does the new Atlas drive better than the 2026?
The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is an evolution of the previous EA888, which Car and Driver identifies as the EA888 Evo5. The publication reports a variable-geometry turbocharger, higher-pressure direct injection, an intercooler integrated into the intake manifold, oil-cooled pistons, 10.5:1 compression, and stronger pistons and connecting rods. Output is 282 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,900 rpm, paired with an eight-speed automatic. That is 13 more horsepower but 15 fewer lb-ft than the outgoing engine.

Car and Driver’s 2027 Atlas SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion reached 60 mph in 7.6 seconds, 0.4 second slower than the 2026 Atlas the publication had previously tested. The result applies to those tested vehicles, not every trim or every driving condition.
Other instrumented comparisons favored the 2027 test vehicle. Car and Driver recorded 0.84 g on its 300-foot skidpad, versus 0.82 g for the prior-year Atlas it tested, and a 165-foot stop from 70 mph, compared with 172 feet previously. Its tester also described the ride as smoother and more composed, while noting a slightly hollow feel on the test vehicle’s 21-inch wheels and suggesting the extra sidewall of 20-inch wheels might suit the Atlas better.

Fuel economy: EPA estimate versus road-test result
For the tested SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion, Car and Driver lists EPA estimates of 20 mpg city, 27 highway and 23 combined. In its separate 75-mph highway test, the publication measured 30 mpg—three mpg above that vehicle’s EPA highway rating. Car and Driver also says the redesigned engine brings a 1–2 mpg increase in EPA combined estimate over the outgoing setup. EPA ratings and a publication’s highway-test result use different methods, so the 30-mpg figure is not a revised EPA rating.
Seating, all-wheel drive and towing vary by market
The Car and Driver test vehicle was a U.S.-market SEL Premium R-Line with 4Motion all-wheel drive and second-row captain’s chairs, making it a six-passenger configuration. Volkswagen Canada describes seven seats with optional captain’s chairs for six, standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive on Canadian trims, and a 5,000-pound towing capacity. Those are Canadian-market specifications; they should not be assumed to apply to U.S. trims.
U.S. trim prices and the unresolved starting-price difference

The publication’s tested SEL Premium R-Line came to $59,126 as equipped, including $695 for second-row captain’s chairs and $296 for heavy-duty floor and cargo mats. The options illustrate that the test car’s configuration and price were not identical to the listed base price for that trim.
Volkswagen’s U.S. preview page displays a $41,610 starting MSRP, while Car and Driver lists the SE at $43,135. The available pages do not reconcile the difference, so neither figure should be treated here as a verified current entry price. Car and Driver also says the base price rose by $2,350, but that comparison does not resolve the discrepancy between the displayed figures.

The road test supports a clear comparison with the 2026 Atlas Car and Driver previously measured: the tested 2027 model was slower to 60 mph, but it recorded better skidpad grip and a shorter 70-mph braking distance. The publication also reports a higher EPA combined estimate for the updated engine and measured 30 mpg in its 75-mph highway test. Those findings apply to its tested SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion and its methods; they do not establish how every trim will perform.

Volkswagen’s announced driver-assistance and airbag features are equipment claims, not independent safety results. The sources cited here do not establish an independent crash-test rating, long-term reliability record or complete ownership costs for the 2027 Atlas.
For buyers comparing it with other three-row SUVs, useful like-for-like checks include acceleration, standardized or observed highway economy, third-row access, passenger capacity, trim-level technology, drivetrain availability, towing and comparable trim pricing. Car and Driver notes that the Atlas lineup it reviewed does not offer a hybrid, while the Palisade and Telluride have hybrid versions; model-year availability and specifications should be checked for the specific alternatives being considered.
