Tesla recorded 699 vehicle registrations in its first 12 months in India, according to Electrek’s calculation from ElecTree data. Its reported total rose to 993 from September 2025 through September 2026—but that span covers 13 calendar months, not one year. A separate report using Vahan data put the cumulative count at 1,017 through October 2, 2026. These are registration counts, not sales figures Tesla has disclosed for India.
How many cars did Tesla sell in its first year in India?
The closest reported figure for Tesla’s first 12 months in India is 699 registrations, calculated by Electrek from ElecTree data. Electrek also reported 993 registrations from September 2025 through September 2026. Because that second window spans 13 calendar months, it does not contradict the first-year figure.
After that period, the cumulative count passed 1,000: Autocar India reported 1,017 Model Y registrations through October 2, 2026, citing Vahan data. Neither number is a Tesla-reported country sales total. Electrek says registrations are the closest available proxy because Tesla does not report sales by country. Electrek’s October 6 report and Autocar India’s report use different data sources and cutoffs; their September counts differ, too.
What the monthly figures show
Electrek reported 69 registrations in September 2025 and 226 in calendar 2025. It counted 202 from January through May 2026, with February at a low of 29. For June, July, August and September 2026, its ElecTree-sourced figures were 38, 116, 117 and 294, respectively. Autocar India, citing Vahan data, reported 291 for September. Keep those September figures separate rather than treating them as one settled count.

Electrek’s September breakdown lists 238 Model Y L registrations and 56 entry Model Y registrations; the remaining registrations in its 294 total included final Model Y Long Range units. The report says Tesla registered 565 vehicles in the four months from June through September, versus 428 in the first nine months of deliveries.
Why did Tesla’s registrations rise?
The increase coincided with two changes to Tesla’s India lineup and pricing. The company launched the six-seat Model Y L on April 22, 2026, at a reported introductory price of ₹61.99 lakh, with deliveries beginning in June. In late May, Tesla cut the entry Model Y’s price from ₹59.89 lakh to ₹50.89 lakh, according to Electrek.

That timing offers a plausible explanation for stronger registrations, but the reported figures do not establish that either the price cut or the new model alone caused the increase. Other factors are not isolated in the available counts.
Which Tesla models and prices are listed in India?
Tesla’s India Design Studio, checked October 7, 2026, listed these variants. Prices and estimated delivery timing can change; Tesla says the final on-road price depends on registration location and individual circumstances.

How large is Tesla in India’s electric-car market?
Electrek described Tesla as accounting for 0.8% of India’s electric-car market in September 2026, while noting that the brand was stronger within the luxury EV segment. The same report cited 35,995 electric-car registrations in India that month, up 98% year over year, based on Vahan data as reported by Autocar Professional. These are reported registration figures, not independently audited Tesla sales. The comparison also concerns the overall EV market; it should not be read as Tesla’s share of the luxury segment.

What does the India launch mean for buyers?
Electrek reported that the Model Y remains imported and that India’s Minister of Heavy Industries confirmed in May 2026 that Tesla would not build a factory in the country. That context does not, by itself, establish how any particular import duty or policy affects a buyer’s final price.
Tesla’s India FAQ says its Supercharger and Destination Charger networks are expanding and will be available for customers soon. That is Tesla’s stated status, not confirmation that nationwide charging access is already complete. The FAQ names Acko, ICICI Lombard, Liberty General Insurance and Zurich Kotak as preferred insurance providers; check with providers directly for coverage and availability in your location. For owners considering accessories, Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual for 2025+ vehicles and software version 2026.32 says, “Use only genuine Tesla parts and accessories.” It also cautions that some accessories may not be available in every market and that non-approved parts or modifications can affect vehicle performance, occupant safety and warranty coverage.
