In GeekWire’s August 1, 2023 test ride, BellHop was a free, on-demand electric shuttle around downtown Bellevue, but its shared pickups made trip times far less predictable than a direct drive. The account describes how the service worked at launch—not whether it is available today.
What BellHop was at launch
Visit Bellevue and transportation operator Circuit introduced BellHop as a free, on-demand shuttle for downtown Bellevue. Riders could request a pickup through Circuit’s iOS or Android app, or flag down a vehicle on the street; designated stations were not required. GeekWire described the service area as roughly four miles across, including Bellevue Square, Old Main Street, Bellevue Botanical Gardens, Bellevue Downtown Park and the Spring District. GeekWire’s August 1, 2023 report is the source for these launch-era details.
How the shared rides affected travel time
BellHop worked as a carpool-style service: drivers could accept other passengers during a trip. That meant the shuttle could serve multiple riders, but a passenger’s route and arrival time could shift as pickups and stops were added.
| GeekWire test ride | Reported trip time | Google Maps direct-drive estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Main Street to the Spring District; pickup at 12:42 p.m., arrival at 1:04 p.m.; included an added pickup | 22 minutes | About 8 minutes |
| Trip toward Bellevue Square; pickup at 1:38 p.m., drop-off at 2:15 p.m.; included other passengers | 37 minutes | About 8 minutes |
These were two individual rides and corresponding Google Maps estimates reported in 2023, not a controlled comparison or a typical travel-time guarantee. The reporter found the rides better suited to occasions without an urgent deadline than to a time-sensitive meeting or show.

What the vehicle and launch schedule were like
GeekWire described the six-door shuttle as resembling an oversized golf cart and reported a maximum speed of 25 mph. Five vehicles were on the road on launch day. The reporter said the slower pace felt uncomfortable on streets where surrounding traffic might be moving at 30 to 40 mph. These are details from the 2023 report, not confirmed current fleet specifications.
| Day | Hours reported at launch |
|---|---|
| Sunday through Thursday | 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Friday and Saturday | 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
The report said rides were free during the launch period. It described selling advertising on the vehicles as a possible way Visit Bellevue might fund the service after its pilot; it did not establish that this plan was later adopted.

App and rider experience
The reporter found the app easy to set up, but arrival estimates changed and were inaccurate on both reported rides. One passenger also said it was difficult to figure out how to move the pickup pin. Combined with the extra stops inherent in shared rides, those issues made the quoted arrival time less dependable than a direct route might suggest.
Circuit Bellevue market supervisor and BellHop driver Conrad Hoernke characterized the role as “Now I do last-mile transit versus global transit.” Visit Bellevue’s Jane Kantor praised the vehicle as “quiet” and “clean”; GeekWire explicitly noted her favorable view was admittedly biased. Passenger Mike Lai said it could be useful “especially in winter when the weather is bad” and “for seniors.” That is one rider’s opinion, not an assessment of accessibility: the 2023 account does not establish wheelchair access or other accessibility features.

What the 2023 account does—and does not—establish
The article documents a launch-era service, schedule, fare, vehicle count and two firsthand rides. It does not establish whether BellHop remains available in 2026, nor does it provide a ridership total, emissions savings, safety rate or service-wide performance statistic. The two test rides should not be used to infer typical travel times.
