A Tesla driver in Ohio said his car moved toward a passing train while Full Self-Driving (FSD) was engaged, forcing him to steer and brake. The incident reportedly happened on May 8, 2024. Gizmodo published the account on May 21 and added an update the next day saying the driver provided Tesla Data Report information indicating FSD was active until he took control. The available reporting does not establish why the car behaved as described or independently determine what caused the incident.
What happened at the Ohio railroad crossing?
According to Gizmodo’s May 21, 2024 report, Tesla owner Craig Doty II said his vehicle approached a railroad crossing as a train was passing on May 8 in Ohio. He described it as the second time in six months that he had experienced the car allegedly moving toward a train while FSD was engaged.
Gizmodo said Doty posted four video angles and a photo showing damage to the car’s front end, which the outlet described as presumably resulting from contact with the crossing arm. That description is not an independent determination of how the damage occurred, and the footage and photo do not by themselves establish the system’s cause or responsibility.
Was Full Self-Driving active?
In a May 22 update, Gizmodo reported that Doty supplied information from a Tesla Data Report indicating FSD was active until he intervened. As quoted by Gizmodo, Doty said it showed the system was active “up until the point I took control of it and cranked the wheel to the right and slammed on the brake!” This is Doty’s interpretation of the supplied report information, as relayed by the outlet; it is not a published independent analysis of the vehicle’s data.

The reporting supports that Doty said FSD was engaged and that he took control. It does not provide an independent technical explanation of the vehicle’s behavior, a verified account of every event detail, or a final investigation finding tied to this incident. Accordingly, the headline allegation should not be treated as a proven account of system causation.
What does FSD-Supervised require of the driver?
In a May 14, 2024 email reproduced in published NHTSA materials, Gregory E. Magno, division chief of the agency’s Office of Defects Investigation, characterized FSD-Supervised as “a partial automation / driver assist system that requires persistent attention and intermittent intervention by the driver.” The designation matters: the system is not described by the agency as a substitute for an attentive driver. A driver must continue watching the road and be ready to intervene.

Have other train-crossing incidents been reported?
A September 29, 2025 letter from Senators Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal cited NBC News reporting that at least six Tesla owners had experienced near-collisions or crashes while FSD was engaged at or near train tracks. That number is the senators’ summary of NBC’s reporting, not an official NHTSA incident count, and it does not verify the details of Doty’s 2024 account.
