A lawsuit alleges that a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck’s rear-door controls stopped working after a November 27, 2024 crash in Piedmont, California, leaving passenger Jack Nelson unable to escape a burning vehicle. The plaintiffs call the door design a “fatal trap”; that is an allegation, not a court finding. Tesla has denied wrongdoing, according to March 2026 reporting.
What the lawsuit alleges happened
The Nelson family’s damages complaint, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, names Tesla, the estates of driver Soren Mangseth Dixon and registered owner Charles Patterson, and Doe defendants. It pleads negligent design and manufacture, strict products liability, negligent failure to recall or retrofit, and negligence. Those are claims made by the plaintiffs; the complaint itself does not establish liability.
According to the complaint, 20-year-old Jack Nelson was riding in the left rear seat when Dixon’s Cybertruck crashed and caught fire. The pleading says Nelson survived the impact with minor injuries but could not escape before dying in the fire.
How the complaint says the rear door could not be opened
The plaintiffs’ account focuses on the right rear door. They allege that ordinary operation depended on low-voltage electronic buttons inside the cabin and on the exterior pillar, and that the controls stopped working after the crash. They also allege there was no exterior mechanical handle. The interior backup release, they say, was beneath the map-pocket liner and therefore difficult to find and use amid smoke, heat, and confusion.

- Special feature: Rustproof
- Surface recommendation: Metal
- Theme: Automobile
The complaint says the door was mechanically openable in theory. The dispute is whether the backup release’s location and operation offered a practical way out in the circumstances alleged—not whether a manual procedure exists in the abstract.
What the complaint says about Nelson’s death
The complaint says the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau determined Nelson died from asphyxia due to inhalation of combustion products, with burns contributing. This is the medical account as recited in the pleading; the underlying coroner record was not independently reviewed for this report.

What Tesla says about opening a Cybertruck without power
Tesla’s service documentation, “Opening Doors with No Power”, describes manual release procedures and notes that rear-door operation takes additional steps. Owners should read the instructions for their own vehicle and learn the procedure before an emergency.
The existence of Tesla’s instructions does not prove whether the release could have been found or used in the Piedmont crash. That question remains part of the plaintiffs’ allegations, rather than a conclusion established by the documentation.

What is known about the crash and other claims
The Los Angeles Times reported on March 19, 2026, that Jordan Miller, the sole survivor of the Piedmont crash, had also sued Tesla, alleging the electronic doors failed while he was trapped amid flames. The Times reported that California Highway Patrol investigators attributed the crash to speeding and driver impairment. Those details are attributed to the newspaper’s reporting; they do not resolve the door allegations.
A separate second amended complaint by Krysta Tsukahara’s family alleges related risks, including that rear occupants may be unable to escape or be rescued if electronic door systems fail because of power loss or other crash damage. That, too, is an allegation in a separate case.

Tesla’s response and the question of a design change
The Guardian reported in March 2026 that Tesla denied wrongdoing in court filings, said the Cybertruck complied with federal safety standards, and said it had met its duty to warn customers. The available reporting does not establish a court ruling on those positions.
The Guardian also quoted Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen discussing a combined electronic and manual release: “The idea of combining the electronic one and the manual one together into one button, I think, makes a lot of sense.” The report did not establish whether or when such a change would be implemented.

What this case raises about emergency door releases
The practical safety question is not only whether a manual release exists, but whether someone can identify and operate it under stress if normal controls fail. Relevant factors include how many steps the backup requires, where it is located, and how clearly an occupant can recognize it. Those are human-factors considerations raised by Tesla’s instructions and the plaintiffs’ account, not the result of a comparative test of vehicles.
