Tesla said a new Model Y drove itself from Gigafactory Texas to a customer’s home on June 28, 2025. Futurism later reported that the car appeared to stop beside a curb marked “NO PARKING FIRE LANE.” The available reporting does not establish whether Tesla had permission to stop there or whether any violation occurred.
What Tesla said happened
Tesla announced the delivery on June 28, 2025. The company described the Model Y’s route as crossing parking lots, highways and city streets on its way from Gigafactory Texas to the new owner’s home. In its Q2 2025 update, Tesla called it the “world’s first autonomous delivery to a customer” and said the new-production car drove about 30 minutes across town, including on highways. That duration is Tesla’s description of this particular trip, not an independently measured performance or safety result. Tesla Q2 2025 Quarterly Update Deck
Why the fire-lane curb became the story
In a June 30 report, Futurism said the apparent stopping point was beside a red curb painted “NO PARKING FIRE LANE.” The report also noted Tesla might have received special permission. The available sources do not resolve whether permission was granted, whether the vehicle was legally stopped, or whether a safety incident occurred. It is therefore accurate to describe the location as an apparent fire-lane stop—not to declare that Tesla parked illegally.
Futurism quoted Dan O’Dowd, CEO and founder of the Dawn Project, criticizing the demonstration as a “PR stunt” that prioritized showmanship over public safety. He also asked whether a fine for blocking a fire lane was included in the purchase price. Those remarks express O’Dowd’s view; they are not a legal finding. Futurism’s June 30, 2025 report

This was not the same claim as consumer FSD (Supervised)
Tesla’s promotional description of this customer delivery should not be read as a description of the consumer Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature. Tesla’s support page says FSD (Supervised) “requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous.” Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) support page
The reporting and Tesla’s update do not specify the delivery car’s software version, remote-support arrangements, route constraints or operating design domain. The sources therefore establish what Tesla claimed about the delivery and what Futurism observed in its report, but not the complete technical controls behind the drive.

How to read Tesla’s “first” claim
Futurism also reported Elon Musk describing the trip as the first fully autonomous drive on a public highway with no one in the car or remotely operating it. The same article challenged the broader priority claim by pointing to Waymo highway testing in Phoenix. Because “first” depends on the definition being used—and the reviewed material does not establish a complete comparison—the claim is best treated as Tesla’s and Musk’s characterization, not a settled industry-wide milestone.
