On October 10, 2024, Tesla staged the We, Robot product unveiling at Warner Bros. Studios in California, showing the Cybercab, Robovan and updated Optimus robots. On June 22, 2025, Tesla began carrying paying passengers in a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
The first event presented future products and a long-term autonomy strategy. The second was an early commercial deployment using modified Model Y vehicles. Treating them as one launch creates a misleading picture of what Tesla actually demonstrated, sold and operated.

What Tesla showed at the October 2024 “We, Robot” event
The October event was not the opening of a public robotaxi network. It was a product presentation built around Tesla’s vision of autonomous transport and a future fleet in which privately owned vehicles could earn money while their owners were not using them.

Cybercab: Tesla’s dedicated robotaxi
The Cybercab was presented as a two-seat autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals. Elon Musk said Tesla expected the vehicle to cost less than $30,000 and enter production before 2027. Later Tesla filings identified 2026 as the scheduled start of volume production.
Those dates and prices were targets, not evidence of a production-ready vehicle. Tesla did not announce customer deliveries, final specifications or completed regulatory approval at the event. The prototype was also shown with inductive charging rather than a conventional plug.
The Cybercab’s importance is that it is designed around autonomous operation from the start. Unlike a Model Y adapted for a robotaxi pilot, it does not retain the normal controls a human driver would use. That makes it a different product from Tesla’s current consumer vehicles running FSD (Supervised).
Robovan: a larger autonomous shuttle
Tesla also unexpectedly revealed the Robovan, a larger electric vehicle designed to carry up to 20 passengers. The concept was aimed at higher-capacity transport rather than one or two-person taxi trips.
Tesla did not provide a production date, price, final technical specification or commercial launch program for the Robovan. It remains important as an indication of the types of autonomous vehicles Tesla says it may build, but the event did not establish when customers could buy or ride one.
Optimus demonstrations
Updated Optimus humanoid robots danced and interacted with people at the event. Musk estimated a future price of approximately $20,000 to $30,000, but Tesla did not give the robot a retail launch date.
The demonstrations also should not be treated as proof that every interaction was independently autonomous. Subsequent reporting indicated that some interactions appeared to have been remotely assisted. The Optimus presentation was therefore a demonstration of Tesla’s ambitions, not a commercial product launch.

What actually launched in Austin in June 2025
Tesla’s first paid robotaxi service began in Austin on June 22, 2025. The initial program was deliberately narrow:
| Feature | Initial Austin launch |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | Modified Tesla Model Y |
| Rider access | Invite-only |
| Operating area | Limited, geofenced parts of Austin |
| Launch fare | Flat $4.20 per ride |
| Published operating hours | 6:00 a.m. to midnight |
| Human presence | Safety monitor in the front passenger seat |
| Weather limitation | Service could be restricted or unavailable during inclement weather |
The first riders included selected Tesla investors, owners and social-media personalities. This was not a citywide, open-to-everyone service, and it did not use the Cybercab shown in 2024.
Model Y vehicles, not Cybercabs
The Austin fleet consisted of Model Y vehicles. Tesla’s Q2 2025 update described the launch as operating with a safety rider, and reports said a Tesla employee sat in the front passenger seat as a safety monitor.
There was no person sitting in the driver’s seat, and reports said the monitor did not have access to a steering wheel or pedals. That distinction matters: saying the cars had no driver is fair in the narrow sense that nobody was driving from the driver’s seat, but saying there was no human involvement is not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTesla also used remote monitoring as part of the rollout. The launch was therefore a constrained operational test with paying passengers, rather than proof that Tesla had deployed an entirely unstaffed and unrestricted autonomous taxi network.
How the Robotaxi app worked
Tesla introduced a separate Robotaxi mobile app for requesting rides. Tesla’s support documentation says users must create a Tesla Account before signing in. The app displays the ride price estimate before the rider confirms the booking.
Tesla’s terms say charges are shown in U.S. dollars and may include tolls, airport fees, regulatory charges and similar costs. That means the initial $4.20 fare should not be treated as a permanent nationwide price. It was the launch-period flat fare, while current charges are presented through the app.

Safety questions followed the Austin launch
The service attracted attention from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration almost immediately. Videos appeared to show robotaxis braking abruptly and possibly making traffic-law or lane-positioning errors. NHTSA contacted Tesla for information.
NHTSA had already asked Tesla questions before the launch about how the system would operate in reduced visibility and poor weather, including details about the Austin deployment and its technology.
Later NHTSA data and reporting documented additional Austin robotaxi crashes and incidents. Raw incident totals need careful handling. A meaningful comparison would require, at minimum, the same reporting period, vehicle miles, incident definitions, severity categories and determination of fault. NHTSA’s reporting system operates under federal reporting rules; it is not automatically a standardized safety ranking of every robotaxi operator.
The initial restrictions were consequently significant. Geofencing, a small fleet, selected riders, remote oversight, weather limits and an onboard safety monitor all reduced the range of situations the service had to handle.
Expansion after the first launch
Tesla’s Q2 2025 update said it intended to expand the Austin fleet and coverage area and eventually remove the safety rider. The company also described Austin as a foundation for expansion into other U.S. cities.
In a January 2026 filing, Tesla said it began testing driverless Robotaxis in Austin in December 2025 and began removing the safety monitor from some customer rides in January 2026, initially on a limited basis.
The same filing listed planned coverage in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas. San Francisco was listed separately as requiring a safety driver.

Tesla’s public Robotaxi webpage, as of August 8, 2026, says autonomous rides are being offered in Miami, Florida, and Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas. Tesla Support gives a more detailed description, referring to limited areas of Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida, and Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas.
Those descriptions are not identical. The safest interpretation is that availability varies by city and that neither wording proves full-city coverage. Tesla says operating hours also vary by area, and the app shows the relevant service-area map when a rider enters a destination.

Rider rules, accessibility and privacy
Tesla’s support documentation says riders can book rides only for themselves. Customers who need wheelchair-accessible transportation are directed to third-party wheelchair-accessible vehicle providers in each service city. Tesla does not claim that every Robotaxi is wheelchair accessible.
For privacy, Tesla’s Robotaxi notice says vehicle data is generally anonymized, encrypted or inaccessible unless a safety-critical event occurs, the rider consents or another legal basis applies.
Riders can manage optional cabin-camera analytics in the app:
- Open the Robotaxi app.
- Tap Profile.
- Open Data Sharing.
- Select Cabin Camera Analytics.
The notice says riders can opt in to share cabin-camera analytics with Tesla. That setting is separate from the basic ability to request a ride.

What Tesla’s robotaxi event really accomplished
The October 2024 presentation put Tesla’s autonomous-transport ambitions on display, but it did not deliver a production Cybercab or a public taxi network. The June 2025 Austin launch was more tangible: customers paid for rides in Model Y vehicles operating inside a restricted area under human and remote oversight.

Since then, Tesla has moved toward limited driverless operation and has identified additional cities for expansion. The central question is no longer whether Tesla has shown an autonomous-vehicle concept. It is whether the company can scale a reliable, legally compliant and commercially useful service beyond carefully controlled launch conditions.

The Bottom Line
Tesla’s robotaxi story has two chapters: the October 2024 unveiling of future vehicles and the June 2025 launch of a restricted Austin service. The latter initially used Model Ys, not Cybercabs, and included a front-seat safety monitor. Tesla has since reported limited driverless testing and expansion plans, but service availability, operating hours and vehicle autonomy remain location-specific.
