An AirTag is a short-range Bluetooth item tracker. A conventional vehicle tracker may use GPS to determine the car’s position and cellular service to report it, so it may be completely invisible to your phone’s Bluetooth and unwanted-tracker scans.
Use your phone to check for AirTags and compatible Bluetooth trackers, then inspect the vehicle itself for a GPS/cellular unit. A missing phone alert does not prove that your car is free of tracking hardware.

iPhone: check Tracking Notifications
Apple’s unwanted-tracking alerts can identify AirTags and compatible third-party Bluetooth trackers that appear to be traveling with you. For AirTags and Find My accessories, you need iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. Compatible third-party trackers covered by the industry specification require iOS or iPadOS 17.5 or later.
Before relying on the feature, check these settings:

- 【Wide-Area Wireless Scan】Think your meeting is private? In larger meeting rooms or hotel spaces, scanning for hidden devices often takes time as you walk around until a signal becomes clear. As your camera detector spy camera finder, its extendable antenna helps steady RF pickup, giving a better sense of direction in wide areas. With adjustable sensitivity, you can avoid missing WiFi cameras. And for non-WiFi pin-hole cameras, the infrared scan reveals disguised tools like a prepared privacy pen.
- 【Infrared Scan】Ever wonder what’s watching you in a new hotel room? Tiny pin-hole cameras can hide in smoke detectors, clothing hooks, chargers, or fixtures you’d never notice. In a completely dark room, the infrared scan in this camera finder hidden camera detector makes hidden lenses reflect as a bright spot—revealing what the eye can’t see. Sweep mirrors, vents, picture frames, chargers, and wall fixtures; it also works as a hidden bug and camera detector to give you peace of mind before you settle in.
- 【Anti-Theft Alarm Mode】Don’t Let Danger Catch You Off Guard. While you’re asleep in a hotel room, hang this anti spy detector on the door handle—any attempt to open the door triggers an instant alert, waking you before someone gets close. And when you’re out and your luggage isn’t always in sight, attaching it to your suitcase adds protection; even slight movement sets off a loud alarm to alert you to theft. Paired with your hidden camera finder, it keeps you aware and protected wherever you go.
- 【Anti-GPS Tracking Scan】Is your car truly safe? GPS trackers can cling to your car with magnets and quietly send out your location. As your gps tracker detector, this device detects the magnetic fields where a tracker is attached and the signals its rf detector picks up when your location is shared. Sweep hiding spots—under seats, along bumpers, near the inside edge of tires. Before you drive, this spy camera detector helps you catch hidden trackers early and avoid someone following you.
- 【Pocket-Size & Long Battery Life】Every hotel room and office you enter should feel safe. With up to 25 hours of battery life and a true pocket-size build, this device stays ready all day—no hunting for outlets during trips or long workdays. Use it as your bug detector & camera finder, recording device detector, or privacy pen hidden camera detector. Slip it into your pocket for hidden camera detectors for travel, quick hotel scans, or fast checks of unfamiliar offices—giving you steady peace of mind wherever you go.
To review previous Android alerts, open Settings → Safety & emergency → Unknown tracker alerts, then tap the tracker-alert history button. Android deletes previous alerts after 48 hours.
2. Understand what a phone scan can—and cannot—find
| Phone result | What it means |
|---|---|
| An AirTag alert appears | An unknown compatible Bluetooth tracker has been detected near you and may have been traveling with you. |
| A manual scan finds a tracker | A compatible tracker is nearby and separated from its owner. It does not by itself prove that the tracker traveled with your car. |
| No tracker appears | No compatible Bluetooth tracker was detected at that time. A hardwired or cellular GPS tracker may still be present. |
| The tracker will not play a sound | It may be out of Bluetooth range, recently separated from its owner, no longer nearby, or using a changed device identifier. |
Android may not send an alert immediately. Its system considers whether the phone has physically moved with the tracker over time and is currently designed to send only one alert per tracker per day. A detected item could also belong to a passenger, be attached to a borrowed bag, or be temporarily misplaced nearby.
Turning off Bluetooth, Location Services, or Find My on your phone does not stop a tracker from reporting its location. The tracker itself must be disabled.
3. Physically inspect the car
Inspect the vehicle outdoors or in a well-lit, safe location. Look for anything that is newly attached, magnetic, taped on, wired into the vehicle, or inconsistent with the surrounding components.
A suspicious device may have an antenna, an LED, a protruding wire, or an unusual plastic enclosure. Compare components on opposite sides of the vehicle: an item without a matching part on the other side deserves a closer look.
Interior inspection points
- Under and between the seats
- Seat-back pockets
- Glove compartment
- Center console
- Door pockets
- Trunk and spare-tire well
- Cargo-area side panels
- The OBD-II port and nearby wiring
- Recently serviced or easily opened compartments
An OBD-II tracker can plug directly into the diagnostic port, usually below the dashboard near the driver’s knees. Do not assume every device connected there is unauthorized; fleet, insurance, financing, and vehicle-maintenance systems may use the same port. Photograph it before unplugging it if you do not recognize it.
Exterior and underbody inspection points
Use a flashlight and look behind rather than reaching blindly into moving or hot components. Pay particular attention to:
- The lower engine compartment
- The steering-system area
- Drivetrain components
- Wiring-harness points
- The exhaust-system area
- Wheel wells
- The undercarriage and vehicle frame
- Tires, wheels, hubcaps, and lug areas
Battery-powered magnetic trackers are often concealed where a person can reach the vehicle’s underside. However, do not crawl under a car supported only by a jack. Use proper jack stands on a suitable surface, or have a mechanic inspect the vehicle on a lift.

If you find nothing, ask a trusted mechanic or law-enforcement agency to check the underbody, wheel wells, wiring, and OBD-II area. A professional inspection is especially worthwhile when you have a credible safety concern but no phone alert.
4. Document an AirTag before disabling it
If you find an AirTag and suspect unlawful tracking, preserve information before removing the battery.
- Photograph the AirTag where you found it.
- Take screenshots of the phone alert and its map.
- Record the date, time, location, and condition of the vehicle.
- Hold the white side of the AirTag against the top of an NFC-capable phone.
- Tap the notification that appears.
- Save the webpage’s serial number and, if shown, the last four digits of the owner’s phone number.
On an iPhone, you can also check the serial number through Find My → Items → [AirTag] → tap the address. Save the AirTag itself if law enforcement may need it. Apple says law enforcement may request the device and its serial number during an investigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Disable an AirTag
From the iPhone alert, open the alert, tap Continue → Instructions to Disable, and follow the directions.
To remove the battery manually:
- Press down on the polished stainless-steel cover.
- Rotate the cover counterclockwise until it stops.
- Remove the cover and the battery.
Do not assume that disabling your phone’s Bluetooth or Location Services has stopped the tracking. The AirTag must be disabled by removing its battery or following Apple’s disable instructions.
6. Handle a conventional GPS tracker carefully
A conventional GPS/cellular tracker may be battery-powered, hardwired into the car, or connected through the OBD-II port. It may contain an internal battery and a cellular antenna, and it may not make any sound or appear in a Bluetooth scan.
If you find one:
- Photograph it in place, including its wiring and mounting location.
- Record any brand, model, serial number, SIM information, or other identifier.
- Do not reset, open, destroy, or discard it unless immediate safety requires removal.
- Ask law enforcement whether they want the device preserved as evidence.
- Have a qualified mechanic disconnect hardwired equipment if it is safe and legally appropriate to do so.
Some trackers are legitimately installed by a lender, fleet operator, employer, insurer, rental company, or previous owner. Confirm ownership before removing a device that may be part of an authorized vehicle system.

7. Prioritize personal safety
If you believe someone is stalking you or monitoring you without permission, avoid confronting that person alone. If removing the tracker could alert an abusive or dangerous person, consider leaving it in place temporarily while you make a safety plan.

The FTC recommends contacting a domestic-violence or stalking advocate and, where possible, using a different device to contact advocates or authorities. If you are in immediate danger, move to a safe public location and contact emergency services.
Keep a dated record of alerts, sightings, messages, suspicious vehicle activity, and discoveries. That record can be more useful than a single scan result.
FAQ
Can a phone detect every GPS tracker on a car?
No. iPhone and Android unwanted-tracker tools primarily detect AirTags and other compatible Bluetooth trackers. A conventional GPS/cellular tracker can be hardwired or battery-powered and may not appear in a Bluetooth scan.
Will an AirTag alert prove who placed it on my car?
No. The alert can help identify and document the AirTag, but it does not prove who attached it. Save the alert, map, serial number, photos, and the device, then let law enforcement investigate if appropriate.
Where is the most common place to look for a tracker?
Check the OBD-II port, under seats, the glove compartment, center console, trunk, spare-tire well, wheel wells, underbody, vehicle frame, and areas near wiring. A mechanic can inspect inaccessible underbody areas safely on a lift.
Should I remove a tracker as soon as I find it?
Not always. Photograph it first and preserve its serial number and location. If stalking or abuse is possible, removing it may alert the person monitoring you. Consider speaking with an advocate or law enforcement before disabling it, unless immediate safety requires removal.
The Bottom Line
Use an iPhone or Android scan to look for AirTags and compatible Bluetooth trackers, but do not treat a clean scan as proof that your car is untracked. Inspect the OBD-II port, cabin, trunk, wiring, wheel wells, and underbody, and use a trusted mechanic for areas that require a lift. Document any device before disabling it, and make a safety plan before acting if stalking or abuse may be involved.
