Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots were supposed to add a glimpse of the company’s future to its We, Robot robotaxi event. Instead, the robots became the story after reports revealed that human operators assisted with many of their public interactions.
The demonstration at Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, California, on October 10, 2024, showed genuine progress in walking and balance—but it did not establish that Optimus can independently perform the household jobs Elon Musk has promised.

What Tesla showed at the Cybercab event
Optimus appeared during Tesla’s unveiling of the Cybercab robotaxi and Robovan. Elon Musk told the audience that the robots would “walk amongst you” and serve drinks. After the presentation, they moved through the crowd and interacted with guests at tables.
Reported demonstrations included:
- Waving to attendees
- Handing out small gift bags
- Playing rock-paper-scissors
- Dancing inside an enclosed gazebo
- Holding cups and interacting with people at the event
Video and eyewitness accounts made the presentation look like a public test of a capable consumer robot. However, one important detail was not obvious from the stage demonstration: several of the robots’ conversations and task-based interactions were supported by people working remotely.

How much of Optimus was autonomous?
The answer is more complicated than either “the robots did everything themselves” or “the robots were entirely remote-controlled.” Tesla Optimus engineer Milan Kovac said around 20 robots were active and that they could walk, balance and dance without direct human control for roughly four hours.
Kovac also said the robots were “human assisted to some extent” for activities such as taking selfies, pouring drinks and handing out snacks. The Los Angeles Times separately reported that employees elsewhere monitored and helped with many interactions. An Optimus acting as a bartender was even recorded acknowledging that it was being assisted by a human.
That distinction matters. Walking across a prepared event area is a different technical challenge from recognizing an unfamiliar person, understanding a spoken request, safely grasping an object and completing a useful task without help. The event appears to have demonstrated autonomous locomotion and balance more clearly than autonomous conversation or manipulation.
There were also signs of the physical limitations still involved. Kovac said one robot fell after a spectator’s handbag caught its hand. That is not necessarily a failure—humanoid robots must operate around people and unpredictable objects—but it illustrates why a polished stage demonstration is not the same as a reliable home appliance.

Why the robots were reportedly human-assisted
The Los Angeles Times reported that Musk asked for Optimus to be included in the event approximately three weeks before it took place. That short preparation window reportedly left Tesla without enough time to develop and validate the software needed for all of the planned interactions.
Remote assistance can be useful during development. Human operators can help a robot interpret unusual requests, correct mistakes and collect data for improving future versions. The problem arises when a demonstration does not clearly distinguish between what the robot is doing independently and what a person is doing behind the scenes.
For Tesla, the disclosure is particularly significant because Optimus has been presented as more than a laboratory project. Musk has described possible uses including walking dogs, babysitting, mowing lawns and fetching groceries. He has also suggested a future price of $20,000 to $30,000 and described the robot as potentially becoming Tesla’s biggest product.

What this means for Tesla’s car business
Optimus is separate from the Cybercab, but the presentation ties both projects to Tesla’s broader promise of large-scale autonomy. The robotaxi depends on a vehicle reliably handling roads, traffic and passengers without a human driver. Optimus depends on a machine reliably handling people, objects and changing environments.
In both cases, the difficult part is not making a machine perform well in a controlled demonstration. It is handling the edge cases that occur millions of times in the real world. For a car, that could mean an unusual road layout or an unpredictable pedestrian. For a humanoid robot, it could mean a slippery floor, a child asking an unclear question or an object that is heavier or more fragile than expected.
The event therefore offered a mixed result. Optimus’ ability to walk, balance and dance for extended periods is meaningful engineering progress. But the need for human assistance with speech and complex interactions shows that Tesla’s consumer-robot ambitions remain under development.

| Claim or demonstration | What the reporting supports |
|---|---|
| Optimus could move around the event | Yes. Tesla said the robots could walk and balance on their own. |
| Optimus could dance | Yes, although the level of autonomy varied by activity. |
| Optimus independently served drinks | Not established. Some drink-related actions involved human assistance, and one robot was seen holding a cup of ice. |
| Optimus handled guest interactions independently | Not consistently. Remote or human-assisted interaction was reported. |
| Optimus will cost $20,000–$30,000 | This was Elon Musk’s projected future price, not a confirmed price. |
| Optimus will walk dogs, babysit and mow lawns | These were proposed uses, not demonstrated production capabilities. |
The fairest reading is that Tesla showed a humanoid platform capable of autonomous movement in a controlled public setting, while people helped with some of the more demanding interactions. That is still a notable demonstration, but it falls short of proving a fully autonomous robot ready for homes or commercial deployment.

FAQ
Were Tesla’s Optimus robots fully autonomous at the robotaxi event?
No. Tesla said the robots could walk, balance and dance on their own, but reporting and comments from Tesla’s engineering team indicated that humans assisted with some conversations, selfies, drink pouring, snack distribution and other complex interactions.
What did the Optimus robots do at Tesla’s We, Robot event?
They interacted with guests by waving, handing out small gift bags, playing rock-paper-scissors and dancing in an enclosed gazebo. Reports do not establish that an Optimus robot independently poured drinks for attendees.
How much will Tesla Optimus cost?
Elon Musk projected a future price of $20,000 to $30,000. Tesla has not presented that figure as a confirmed production price, and it does not come with a firm consumer delivery date.

Why did Tesla use human assistance for Optimus?
The event reportedly added Optimus roughly three weeks before it took place. That may have left Tesla insufficient time to develop and test the software needed for reliable autonomous interaction. Remote assistance can also help engineers gather data while the system is still being developed.
The Bottom Line
Tesla’s Optimus demonstration showed real progress in humanoid movement, but it was not proof of a fully autonomous household robot. The robots could walk and balance independently, while human operators assisted with several of the interactions that made the event visually impressive. Musk’s promised uses and $20,000–$30,000 price remain future projections—not specifications buyers can rely on today.
