Tesla’s 2025 affordable-EV timeline was a company forecast, not a confirmed customer-delivery date. The company first targeted production of new, more affordable vehicles in the first half of 2025, then reported first builds in June and said volume production was planned for the second half. Its later updates discuss more affordable Model 3 and Model Y trims, but do not establish whether those trims were the unnamed model first built in June 2025.
What Tesla said it would do—and what it later reported
The original plan appeared in Tesla’s Q3 2024 update, published October 23, 2024. Tesla said preparations were underway and that it planned to begin launching new vehicles, including more affordable models, in the first half of 2025. The wording described a planned start, not a guarantee of customer deliveries by a particular date.
Tesla also said the vehicles would combine elements of its next-generation and existing platforms and be built on current production lines. It cautioned that this approach would deliver less cost reduction than previously expected. The company did not name the planned vehicle in the retrieved update.
How the timeline changed
| Date | Tesla’s reported plan or update | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| October 23, 2024 | Q3 2024 update: new vehicles, including more affordable models, were planned to begin launching in the first half of 2025. | A forecast for a launch period; no named model or customer-delivery date. |
| January 29, 2025 | Q4 2024 update: Tesla said the plan remained on track for a first-half 2025 start of production. | The company still stated the original production target. |
| April 22, 2025 | Q1 2025 update: Tesla again said the plan remained on track for a first-half start of production. | A repeated forecast, not evidence that production or deliveries had begun. |
| June 2025, reported July 23, 2025 | Q2 2025 update: Tesla said first builds of a more affordable model took place in June and volume production was planned for the second half of 2025. | First builds were reported; volume production was still stated as a plan. The update did not say June customer deliveries began. |
| January 28, 2026 | Q4 2025 update: Tesla said it had completed a refresh of its vehicle lineup with the new Model Y and additional variants. | The retrieved update did not identify a separate new affordable model as the outcome of the 2024 forecast. |
| April 22, 2026 | Q1 2026 update: Tesla said it continued rolling out more affordable Model 3 and Model Y trims in markets outside China. | Lower-priced trims of existing models were being rolled out; the update does not establish that they were the unnamed model first built in June 2025. |
Did Tesla make an affordable EV in 2025?
Tesla’s Q2 2025 update supports a narrow answer: the company said it completed first builds of a more affordable model in June 2025 and planned volume production for the second half of that year. Those are separate manufacturing milestones. A first build does not prove that a vehicle was in volume production, available in showrooms, or delivered to customers.

The updates retrieved through Q1 2026 do not confirm the identity of that June-built model or establish a complete account of its subsequent production and deliveries. They also do not confirm a price for it.
Is the cheaper Tesla a new model, or a lower-priced Model 3 or Model Y?
The two descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable. Tesla’s 2024 forecast referred to unnamed new vehicles, while its Q1 2026 update referred to more affordable trims of the Model 3 and Model Y. The reporting does not prove those trims were the same vehicle as the model first built in June 2025.

Nor does the retrieved material support calling the forecast vehicle “Model 2,” assigning it a $25,000 price, or identifying it as Cybercab. Tesla described Cybercab as a purpose-built robotaxi with a separate manufacturing strategy; the available statements do not identify it as the forecast affordable consumer car.
