For routine cleaning, Tesla’s guidance is to rinse away grit, hand wash with mild pH-neutral soap and a soft sponge, rinse again, and dry with clean microfiber cloths. If an automatic wash is unavoidable, use Car Wash Mode and follow the additional instructions for a moving conveyor wash.
Why Tesla cautions against automatic car washes
Tesla’s Cybertruck exterior-cleaning guidance says: “Tesla does not recommend taking Cybertruck through an automatic car wash.” The warning matters because wash equipment can interact with vehicle features or surfaces if the truck is not prepared correctly. Tesla’s owner’s manual warns that failing to enable Car Wash Mode may result in damage, including damage to the charge port or windshield wipers, and says damage caused by a car wash is not covered by warranty.
How to wash a Cybertruck by hand
- Rinse off grit first. Flush grime and grit from the body, including mud in wheel wells and panel seams. If roads have been salted, rinse the underside, wheel wells, and brakes as well.
- Wash gently. Mix mild, pH-neutral soap with water and hand wash using a soft sponge.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse with clean water and dry using clean microfiber cloths. Avoid tight-napped or rough cloths.
Choose cleaning products for their properties, not merely because they are marketed for cars. Tesla cautions against highly alkaline or caustic cleaners, acidic products, and chemicals above pH 13. Avoid hot water and washing in direct sunlight. Do not direct a hose at seals or exposed electronics, and do not aim high-pressure water too close to the truck; if using a pressure washer, keep its nozzle at least 12 inches (30 cm) from the surface.
If you must use an automatic wash
Tesla does not endorse an automatic-wash type in the cited guidance. If using one is necessary, prepare the vehicle as directed rather than assuming a wash is safe simply because it is touchless or uses a conveyor.

- Enable Car Wash Mode. This mode closes the windows, locks the charge port, and disables the windshield wipers, Sentry Mode, and walk-away door locking.
- For a moving conveyor wash, enable Free Roll. Tesla says this keeps the vehicle in Neutral for the wash and helps prevent the parking brake from applying if the driver leaves the seat.
- Watch for the mode to end. Car Wash Mode disables if vehicle speed exceeds 9 mph (15 km/h), or when you touch Exit.
These settings reduce certain avoidable risks; they do not change Tesla’s recommendation against automatic washes or its warranty warning about wash-related damage.
Keep corrosive contaminants off the stainless-steel exterior
Tesla says the Cybertruck’s stainless-steel exterior has no clear coat, and scratches are in the stainless-steel panels themselves. Its care guidance also says to remove corrosive or non-pH-neutral substances promptly because they can cause corrosion. Examples include road salt, grease, oil, tree resin, dead insects, tar, acidic materials, and industrial fallout.

If you see orange or brown spots, do not automatically assume the steel itself is rusting. Tesla’s separate surface-contamination instructions treat these spots as surface contamination and provide a spot-cleaning process.

Whatever the phrase may suggest, it does not mean the truck can be treated as impervious to ordinary cleaning risks: Tesla’s actual care instructions call for gentle hand washing, prompt removal of contaminants, and caution around automatic washes.
