Tesla later said it had started producing 4680 packs for certain Model Ys, but that confirms limited deployment—not that Tesla met its original cost, range or manufacturing goals. Which battery a Model Y Juniper uses depends on its market, trim and production date.
What did CATL’s chairman say about Tesla’s 4680 battery?
In a November 18, 2024 report, Notebookcheck attributed criticism of Tesla’s 4680 plans to CATL chairman Robin Zeng. Zeng reportedly questioned whether Tesla could make cylindrical 4680 cells at half the cost of then-current cells and said the company’s timelines were too aggressive. Notebookcheck reported that Zeng had discussed the issue with Elon Musk. These are attributed remarks, not a direct transcript or independent engineering finding.
Notebookcheck quoted Zeng as saying: “Maybe something needs five years. But he says two years. I definitely asked him why. He told me he wanted to push people. He probably himself thinks it needs five years, but if you believe him when he says two years, you will be in big trouble. The direction is right.”
The same report attributed a sharper judgment to Zeng: he said Musk was good at chips, software, hardware and mechanical matters, but did not understand 4680 “electrochemistry,” which Zeng said “is going to fail and never be successful.” That is Zeng’s assessment as reported by Notebookcheck; it should not be read as proof that 4680 cells cannot work.

Does the Model Y Juniper use Tesla’s 4680 battery?
There is no single answer for every Juniper. Battery supplier and pack details vary by market, trim and date, and Tesla’s later announcement did not identify all the vehicles receiving its 4680 packs.
A January 2025 Notebookcheck report, based on leaked Chinese certification data, put usable capacity at 62.5 kWh for the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive Juniper and 78.4 kWh for the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version. The report described the China-market base RWD pack as using CATL LFP cells. These are reported figures for specific China-market configurations, not universal Juniper specifications.

In January 2026, Tesla said it had begun producing 4680-cell battery packs for “certain Model Ys.” Tesla described the packs as an additional supply source to help navigate trade barriers and tariff risks. Its statement did not specify the exact trims, factories, markets or number of vehicles, and it did not say that 4680 packs replaced CATL cells in the China-market base RWD Juniper. Electrek’s coverage reported the statement.
What is known about 4680 Model Y range?
Electrek’s May 2026 coverage compared a European Model Y Premium Long Range RWD configuration reported to use a 4680-based “8L” pack with the LG pack it replaced. The article reported WLTP range falling from 661 km to 609 km. This is a configuration-specific secondary-source comparison, not a result that can be applied to every Model Y or Juniper.

Electrek also said independent confirmation of improved charging performance for the 8L pack was not available. The figures therefore do not establish a general 4680 range or charging advantage—or disadvantage—across the Model Y lineup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did Tesla meet its original 4680 cost and manufacturing targets?
The available reporting does not settle that question. Tesla’s statement that it began producing 4680 packs for certain Model Ys establishes deployment, but it does not show the packs’ production cost or prove that Tesla achieved the cost and timing goals Zeng criticized. No independently verified, comparable production-cost figure is available here, so a dollar-per-kWh estimate or definitive claim that Tesla met or missed its target would go beyond the evidence.
