It starts when the original warranty expires and charges a $500 deductible per service visit with one or more covered repairs. So “10-year warranty” is shorthand for two separate coverage periods—not ten years of uniform, unrestricted coverage.
What Tesla’s “10-year” Model Y coverage actually means
A new Battery ESA may add up to two years after the original battery and drive-unit limited warranty ends. The original warranty lasts eight years, so the combined calendar span can reach ten years. The extension is capped at 30,000 miles and ends when either its 24-month term or mileage limit is reached, whichever comes first. A driver who reaches the mileage cap sooner will not receive a full two additional years. Tesla’s Battery ESA terms describe the extension; the Vehicle Warranty page lists the original coverage.
Original Model Y battery warranty by version
Tesla’s current US-facing warranty page lists these original battery and drive-unit limits. It also specifies at least 70% battery-capacity retention during the original warranty period.
| Model Y version | Original battery and drive-unit warranty |
|---|---|
| RWD and AWD | 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first |
| Premium RWD, Premium AWD, Performance AWD, and L Premium Launch Series | 8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first |
These are the original warranty limits, not additional ESA mileage. Tesla cautions that the warranty supplied with the specific vehicle is the authoritative document, so confirm the coverage for your vehicle and region.

What the Battery ESA covers—and what it does not
The agreement covers repair or replacement of eligible Tesla-made or Tesla-supplied high-voltage battery and drive-unit components when they fail during the ESA term, subject to the contract’s conditions and exclusions. Tesla says parts external to the battery and drive unit are not covered. The public summary is not a substitute for the full agreement: check the exclusions and terms shown for your vehicle before buying.
How the $500 deductible works
Tesla applies a $500 deductible per service visit at which one or more eligible covered repairs or a replacement is performed. It is not described as a separate $500 charge for every covered component repaired during the same visit. The deductible applies to ESA service; it does not change the terms of the original warranty.

Eligibility, price, and purchase
Model Y owners must buy the ESA while the vehicle is still within its original Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty. Once that warranty expires, Tesla says the vehicle is no longer eligible. Tesla may notify owners in the app as expiration approaches.
- Open the Tesla app and go to Upgrades > Service Plans.
- Review the Battery ESA offer for your vehicle, including the displayed price and coverage terms.
- Complete the purchase as a separate one-time transaction if you decide to proceed.
Tesla does not publish one universal ESA price on its public page; the app displays the vehicle-specific price and terms. The ESA cannot be added to the vehicle’s purchase price or financing. Check the VIN, regional availability, and governing agreement in the app and contract.

How to decide whether it fits your situation
The official coverage details establish what the ESA offers, but do not establish the likelihood of a covered failure or expected savings. To assess the offer, compare its app-quoted price and contract terms with your ownership plans, expected mileage, and tolerance for repair costs. The 30,000-mile cap matters especially if you expect to drive enough to reach it well before 24 months. Without your vehicle-specific price and circumstances, there is no universal answer to whether the ESA is worthwhile.
