Tesla registered 9,945 new cars in the European Union in January 2025, down 45.2% from 18,161 a year earlier. The sharp drop came as EU battery-electric car registrations rose, making the figures a notable setback for Tesla—but not proof of why its registrations fell.
What happened to Tesla in January 2025?
The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) counted 9,945 new Tesla registrations in the EU in January 2025, compared with 18,161 in January 2024. That is a 45.2% year-over-year decline. Tesla’s share of new EU car registrations fell from 1.8% to 1.0% over the same comparison. ACEA’s January 2025 release and manufacturer table report registrations, not Tesla’s company-reported deliveries.
The scope matters: these figures are for the European Union, not all of Europe. They should not be read as including the United Kingdom or EFTA markets.
Was the broader electric-car market also shrinking?
No. The overall EU new-car market weakened slightly, while battery-electric registrations increased. ACEA reported that total new-car registrations fell 2.6% in January 2025, but new battery-electric registrations rose 34% to 124,341 and made up 15% of the market. ACEA’s January figures put the two trends side by side.

Electric cars had already gained ground in the EU before January 2025: battery-electric models accounted for 10.9% of new-car registrations in January 2024, according to ACEA’s January 2024 release. Across full-year 2024, the EU market grew 0.8%, and battery-electric cars held a 13.6% share, per ACEA’s 2024 year-end figures. These different periods provide context, but they do not explain Tesla’s one-month result.
Do the numbers show that politics or competition caused the decline?
No. The registration data establish the size of Tesla’s decline and the market conditions in January; they do not identify its cause. Frank Landymore’s February 25, 2025 Futurism report raised Elon Musk’s political activity and public behavior, possible brand backlash, and competition as explanations. Those are interpretations or hypotheses, not conclusions demonstrated by ACEA’s figures.

The contrast with rising EU battery-electric registrations makes Tesla’s result stand out from the broader electric-car trend. It still cannot tell us how much, if any, of the change came from consumer sentiment, competition, supply, model timing, or other factors. The cited figures do not quantify those contributions.

The February 25, 2025 headline referred to January registrations described as European, but the primary figures discussed here are EU-only. A comparison that includes the UK or EFTA countries would use a wider geography and could produce different totals. For the claim that Tesla’s registrations fell 45.2%, the defensible description is: Tesla’s EU registrations in January 2025 versus January 2024.
