Tesla ended its Model S and Model X production programs at its Fremont, California, factory and is converting their former production space for Optimus humanoid robots. The change does not mean Tesla is stopping car production at Fremont: the city says Model 3 and Model Y production will continue there.
What Tesla announced—and what “ending” means
On January 28, 2026, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would bring the Model S and Model X programs to an end and use their Fremont production space for Optimus. He described the decision as part of a shift toward autonomy, saying it was time to give the two programs “an honorable discharge.” The Q4 2025 earnings-call transcript records the announcement.
This is a decision about manufacturing and product programs, not evidence that existing Model S or Model X vehicles have disappeared. Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings-call transcript later said production had ended earlier than midyear, but did not give the date the last vehicle came off the line. The transcript is the source for that timing.
What will replace the Model S and Model X on the line?
Tesla plans to convert the former S/X production area into an Optimus factory. Musk set a long-term goal of making one million Optimus robots a year in that space. That figure is a target, not a reported production rate or proof that the factory can already produce robots at that scale.

Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q described Optimus as a general-purpose autonomous humanoid robot and said the company was preparing and investing for large-scale production. It does not establish that the one-million-per-year goal has been reached. Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q provides that update.
In August 2026, Tesla’s Q2 earnings-call transcript described the Optimus line as replacing the former S/X space and acknowledged the difficulty of scaling manufacturing. The transcript was published by The Motley Fool. The available statements describe a production transition and preparation for scale, not a verified current annual output.

Is Tesla ending car production at Fremont?
No. The City of Fremont said refreshed Model 3 and Model Y mass production would continue at the factory alongside Optimus and potential future vehicle programs. The conversion applies to the space used for Model S and Model X, not the entire Fremont factory. The city’s January 28, 2026 statement describes the continuing vehicle production.

What owners and prospective buyers should not assume
The production-program announcement alone does not establish whether Model S or Model X vehicles remain available from inventory, nor does it set out the duration or terms of parts and service support for current owners. The cited Q1 2026 call also does not identify the exact date of the last vehicle’s production. Those details require separate confirmation from Tesla.

The available sources likewise do not establish comparative sales, margins, or demand for the two vehicle programs versus Optimus. The stated rationale is Musk’s strategic shift toward autonomy and the factory-space conversion—not a published financial comparison.
