But the ranking is specific to that period and to insurance quote data. In LendingTree’s later report, based on 2025 data, Tesla ranked third—not first. Neither result establishes how often Teslas crash per mile, who was at fault, or what caused the accidents.
What the headline means
The “Teslas crash more than any other brand” wording refers to a historical LendingTree comparison reported in December 2023. LendingTree analyzed QuoteWizard insurance inquiry data for 30 car brands and recorded 23.54 accidents per 1,000 Tesla drivers from Nov. 14, 2022, through Nov. 14, 2023. Ram ranked second at 22.76 per 1,000 in that comparison. LendingTree’s report of the historical finding describes the result as a rate within its dataset—not a count of every crash involving each brand.
The ranking changed in a subsequent LendingTree report. For QuoteWizard data from Jan. 1 through Dec. 16, 2025, Tesla ranked third at 23.1 accidents per 1,000 drivers. Ram ranked first at 23.9, followed by Subaru at 23.2. LendingTree says Tesla led the preceding year’s ranking. The later results are available in LendingTree’s latest brand report, updated Feb. 2, 2026.
How to read the accident rate
These figures are accidents per 1,000 drivers represented in insurance quote or inquiry records. They are not a population-wide census and do not adjust for how many miles drivers travel. They also do not measure crash severity or distinguish fault from involvement. The rate answers a narrower question: how frequently accidents appeared per 1,000 drivers in the records LendingTree analyzed.

- Not a per-mile risk: The reports do not provide miles driven as the denominator, so they cannot show which brand has the highest crash rate for a given distance traveled.
- Not a finding of fault: The brand-level rate does not establish that Tesla drivers caused the accidents.
- Not a measure of severity: The figures do not say whether accidents involved minor damage, injuries, or fatalities.
- Not proof of a vehicle or technology cause: The rates alone do not show that vehicle design, performance, or Autopilot caused the accidents.
Why another LendingTree study has a different ranking
LendingTree also examined quote data in the 50 largest U.S. cities for July 30, 2023, through July 30, 2024. Tesla ranked fifth, at 4.87 accidents per 1,000 drivers, among the 30 makes with the highest number of quotes in that study. The city study covers a different geography, period, and set of records than the national comparisons. Its rate should not be compared directly with the national figures as if the populations and denominators were identical.
Rankings can differ when the time window, location, included makes, or source population changes. A useful comparison needs those details alongside the rate—and should distinguish insurance-recorded accidents from police-reported crashes, fatal crashes, or events per mile. The LendingTree figures cited here do not make those other measurements.

Does this show Teslas are dangerous or Autopilot is responsible?
No. The ranking is an association between vehicle make and accidents in quote data, not a causal analysis. LendingTree’s 2023 coverage notes that the data does not identify the exact cause of accidents or establish who was at fault. It therefore cannot support a conclusion that Teslas are inherently unsafe, that Tesla drivers cause more crashes, or that Autopilot explains the result.
In that coverage, LendingTree insurance expert Rob Bhatt offered a possible explanation for differences between vehicle groups, saying, “Most people who drive minivans seem more interested in getting their kids around town safely than they are in zipping around in a high-horsepower vehicle.” That is commentary about possible differences among drivers, not a demonstrated explanation for Tesla’s ranking.

The takeaway for readers
The original headline is accurate only when tied to its 2022–2023 LendingTree dataset: Tesla ranked first among the 30 brands in that analysis. LendingTree’s later report using 2025 data placed Tesla third. These quote-based rankings offer a limited comparison, not a verdict on crash risk per mile, fault, severity, vehicle safety, or Autopilot.
