Tesla says the humanoid is intended for unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks. Its latest filing, for the first half of 2026, describes continued development and preparations and investment for large-scale production; it does not establish that large-scale production or broad autonomous deployment has been achieved.
Why Tesla is building a humanoid robot
Tesla’s rationale is that AI developed for vehicles and robots belongs to a wider effort to apply autonomy in the physical world. In its AI and Robotics overview, the company says it develops and deploys autonomy across vehicles and robots, using AI for vision and planning. It describes Optimus as a general-purpose, bipedal autonomous humanoid robot intended to perform unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks.

That is Tesla’s stated goal, not a demonstrated task record. The company says making a robot work in the physical world requires software for balance, navigation, perception and interaction with its surroundings. Those demands help explain why a humanoid robot is not simply a car’s self-driving system put on legs: it must stay upright, move through changing spaces and handle physical objects.

What Optimus has to do with Tesla’s cars
Tesla says it applies learnings from self-driving technology to Optimus. Its FY2025 Form 10-K also describes AI as part of its work on autonomous driving and robots. This is a company-described link in development strategy; it does not show that vehicle capability transfers directly to a robot or that either system has reached a particular level of autonomy.

The distinction matters when comparing the projects. A vehicle system operates in the context of a car and roads; Optimus must balance and interact with the physical world. Tesla’s FY2025 filing says drivers using its current advanced driver-assistance systems must remain fully engaged. The cited materials do not establish an equivalent, validated autonomy level or unsupervised-work record for Optimus.
In Master Plan Part IV, dated September 1, 2025, Tesla presents physical-world AI as a strategic focus. It describes autonomous vehicles as a way to improve transportation affordability, availability and safety, and positions Optimus for monotonous or dangerous jobs. These are the company’s expected benefits, not independently measured outcomes.

What Tesla’s latest filing says about development and production
Tesla’s H1 2026 Form 10-Q says the company was advancing Optimus development using its real-world AI data and making preparations and investments for large-scale production. It also flags uncertainty involved in establishing and ramping manufacturing operations. The filing supports the conclusion that development and production preparation are underway; it does not confirm volume output, a completed factory rollout or a specific production total.

TechCrunch reported on July 22 that Tesla’s Q2 shareholder letter omitted earlier wording that Optimus would reach “volume production” in 2026. The report said Tesla was still building out manufacturing lines and quoted Elon Musk describing the robot as Tesla’s hardest product to scale because every aspect was new. That report indicates uncertainty around the timing and difficulty of scaling; it does not show that Tesla has permanently abandoned production plans.

Is Optimus already working in Tesla factories?
The cited sources establish development and preparations for production, but they do not give a verified fleet count, a representative list of factory tasks performed autonomously, or independent task-performance results. Without those details, it is not possible to say from this evidence how many robots are operational or how reliably they perform work in factories. A development milestone, planned use or manufacturing-line build-out should not be treated as proof of broad factory deployment.

The cited materials do not establish a retail model, consumer launch date or official sales channel for Optimus. They also do not identify consumer accessories or replacement parts. Tesla’s production preparations concern a manufacturing plan; they are not evidence that a robot is available to order.
