Tesla announced a company-wide reduction of more than 10% of its global workforce on April 15, 2024. Around the same time, Drew Baglino resigned after 18 years at Tesla and Rohan Patel left the company. However, the public record does not establish that either executive was a layoff victim.
Tesla’s filing describes Baglino’s departure as a resignation effective April 14. Patel confirmed that he had left amid “big overall changes,” but Tesla did not publish a comparable executive-departure filing for him. The departures were part of the same broader restructuring story, but timing alone does not prove that Tesla fired either man.
What Tesla actually announced
Tesla described the move as a company-wide restructuring, not a precisely quantified final layoff. In an internal email attributed to Elon Musk and in a subsequent Form 8-K filing, the company said it would reduce its global headcount by more than 10%.
Tesla said the restructuring was intended to:
- eliminate duplicated roles and job functions;
- reduce costs; and
- increase productivity as the company focused on automotive, energy and artificial-intelligence opportunities.
The wording matters. “More than 10%” establishes a floor, not a final total of exactly 10%. Tesla also did not provide a definitive final global number in the cited announcement.

How many jobs did that represent?
Tesla reported 140,473 employees worldwide as of December 31, 2023 in its 2023 Form 10-K. Ten percent of that year-end headcount is approximately 14,047 employees.
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| 140,473 | Tesla’s worldwide headcount at the end of 2023 |
| More than 10% | The workforce-reduction threshold Tesla announced |
| About 14,047 | The approximate number represented by 10% of the year-end 2023 headcount |
That calculation is useful for understanding the scale, but it is not a confirmed final layoff count. Tesla’s December 31 headcount was not necessarily the same as its workforce on April 15, and cuts could have been phased across countries, departments and employment categories.
Were Drew Baglino and Rohan Patel laid off?
That has not been established by the public evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

His own public statement also characterized the decision as his move to leave after 18 years.
Patel also left Tesla. He told TechCrunch that he decided to depart amid “big overall changes,” without giving a more specific explanation. Unlike Baglino, Patel was not identified in the cited SEC filing through a comparable principal-officer resignation notice.
That difference in documentation does not prove that Patel’s exit was voluntary, involuntary or less significant. It means only that the public record is clearer about Baglino’s formal status. Nor does the absence of a filing prove that Patel was part of the mass layoffs.
Contemporary reporting described the job cuts as reaching senior levels, and Elon Musk publicly thanked departing executives. Those facts explain why the departures were reported together, but they still do not establish that either executive was selected for, or terminated through, Tesla’s general layoff process.

Drew Baglino was one of Tesla’s most senior technical leaders. He joined the company in March 2006 and had served as senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering since October 2019, according to Tesla’s 2023 proxy statement and April 2024 SEC filing.
His remit was substantially broader than batteries alone. Powertrain and energy engineering encompassed areas including:
- battery systems;
- electric motors and power electronics;
- vehicle powertrain engineering; and
- energy-storage products and related engineering work.
Tesla’s 2023 proxy identified Baglino as one of the company’s named executive officers. He had also been a recognizable technical representative for Tesla, appearing with Musk at company events and on earnings calls.
Why Baglino’s departure mattered
Baglino’s 18-year tenure gave him institutional knowledge stretching from Tesla’s early Roadster period through the company’s mass-market expansion. His departure therefore removed a senior internal engineering leader while Tesla was trying to lower costs and advance new vehicle, battery, energy and AI programs.
That does not prove Tesla’s engineering programs were compromised. It does create a potential continuity and knowledge-transfer risk: a company can reduce layers and duplicated work, but it can also lose experience, accountability and context when long-serving leaders leave during multiple product and factory transitions.

There is no reliable public evidence that Baglino left because of a specific disagreement over a lower-cost vehicle, a robotaxi strategy or another product decision. The SEC filing confirms the resignation and its effective date, not the private reason behind it.
Who was Rohan Patel?
Rohan Patel was Tesla’s vice president of global public policy and business development. His responsibilities included public policy, regulatory relationships, site selection and business development. A later Overture biography describes him as a member of Tesla’s executive leadership team who reported to the CEO.
Patel was sometimes highly visible on X and responsive to questions about Tesla, but describing him as Tesla’s public-relations chief would be misleading. His formal role was centered on policy and business development.

- government incentives and industrial-policy programs;
- factory sites, permits and local-government partnerships;
- regulatory relationships;
- charging and energy-policy negotiations; and
- relationships with policymakers in the markets where Tesla operates or plans to expand.
Patel’s departure therefore represented a loss of policy and government-relations continuity, even though the public record does not disclose whether his exit was voluntary, negotiated or connected to a specific organizational change.
Timeline of the departures and workforce reduction
- April 2, 2024: Tesla reported first-quarter production of 433,371 vehicles and deliveries of 386,810. The company cited the Model 3 production ramp, shipping diversions related to the Red Sea conflict and an arson attack at Gigafactory Berlin as factors affecting production and deliveries. See Tesla’s production and delivery release.
- April 14, 2024: Baglino’s resignation became effective, according to Tesla’s SEC filing.
- April 15, 2024: Tesla announced the global workforce reduction of more than 10%. Baglino publicly confirmed his departure, Patel said he had left, and Musk thanked departing executives publicly. Contemporaneous reports described layoffs affecting multiple functions and extending into senior ranks.
- April 16, 2024: Tesla filed the Form 8-K disclosing Baglino’s resignation and the company-wide restructuring. The filing date was two days after Baglino’s effective departure and one day after the workforce announcement.
- April 23, 2024: Tesla released its first-quarter financial results and held its earnings webcast.
Why was Tesla cutting jobs?
Tesla’s official explanation was organizational: duplicated roles, cost reduction and higher productivity. The business backdrop was also difficult, although the financial pressure should be treated as context rather than proof of the precise reason any individual left.
First-quarter operating pressure
Tesla’s official Q1 2024 financial update reported:

| Measure | Q1 2024 result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Deliveries | 386,810 vehicles | — |
| Production | 433,371 vehicles | — |
| Revenue | $21.301 billion | Down 9% |
| Total gross profit | $3.696 billion | Down 18% |
| Operating income | $1.171 billion | Down 56% |
| Operating margin | 5.5% | 11.4% a year earlier |
| Net income attributable to common stockholders | $1.129 billion | Down 55% |
Tesla also said global battery-electric-vehicle adoption remained under pressure, particularly outside China. The combination of slower vehicle growth, price competition and lower profitability made a cost and organizational review understandable from a business perspective, even though it does not by itself explain the circumstances of Baglino’s or Patel’s departure.
Margin pressure from price reductions
Tesla’s 2023 annual report showed how aggressive pricing had affected profitability. Total automotive gross margin fell from 28.5% in 2022 to 19.4% in 2023. Total company gross margin fell from 25.6% to 18.2% over the same period.
Tesla attributed the automotive-margin decline primarily to lower average selling prices, partly offset by lower unit costs and manufacturing credits. That is why describing the restructuring simply as a response to “bad sales” is incomplete: Tesla was dealing with demand and growth concerns, a global EV price war, increased competition, product transitions and pressure to improve efficiency.
Product and strategy uncertainty
At the time, some coverage connected the layoffs with uncertainty around a lower-cost Tesla vehicle and a possible shift toward a robotaxi-focused strategy. Reporting differed over whether the lower-cost vehicle had been canceled, delayed or reworked. Those strategy questions should not be presented as settled explanations for either executive’s departure.

The departures can reasonably be interpreted in two ways, and the available evidence does not conclusively select one.

The efficiency case
Tesla could argue that a flatter organization with fewer duplicated roles would reduce costs and speed decisions. In that interpretation, the executive exits were part of a deliberate effort to match the company’s structure to a new phase focused on automotive efficiency, energy and AI.
Large companies often eliminate overlapping responsibilities during a restructuring. A departure announced alongside that process is not automatically evidence of dysfunction or a forced firing.

The counterargument is that Tesla was removing experienced leadership while managing several complicated transitions at once. Baglino had deep technical knowledge of powertrain and energy systems. Patel had experience with governments, regulators, site selection and business development. Losing both could make knowledge transfer and external coordination more difficult.
That is an analytical risk, not proof that Tesla’s programs would fail. The effect would depend on who inherited their responsibilities, how much of the organization was retained and whether the company’s new structure improved accountability.
Leadership-depth concerns
Baglino had been one of Tesla’s most visible senior technical executives, which naturally raised questions about leadership depth and succession. But there is no evidence in the cited sources that he had been formally designated as Elon Musk’s successor. His departure should not be described as the loss of a confirmed successor.
For investors, the same events could signal either disciplined restructuring or leadership instability. The facts support both interpretations as possibilities; they do not prove either one.
How large did Tesla’s workforce reduction ultimately become?
Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K reported 125,665 employees worldwide at December 31, 2024, compared with 140,473 at the end of 2023.
| Year-end comparison | Employees |
|---|---|
| December 31, 2023 | 140,473 |
| December 31, 2024 | 125,665 |
| Difference | 14,808 fewer employees |
| Percentage change | Approximately 10.5% lower |
This is a useful later checkpoint, but it is not an audit of the April layoffs. The year-end comparison includes hiring, attrition and other workforce changes throughout 2024. It does not prove that exactly 14,808 people were terminated in April, or that every reduction came from the announced restructuring.
In June 2024, CNBC reported an estimate that Tesla’s workforce had fallen by at least 14% based on an internal email-distribution list. That was an independently reported estimate, not precise or audited payroll data.
Bloomberg reporting reproduced by Bloomberg Law also reported that some divisions could face cuts approaching 20%. That higher figure applied to reported departmental exposure, not Tesla’s confirmed global reduction, and should not be substituted for the company-wide “more than 10%” figure.
What remains unknown
- The exact final number of employees affected by the April 2024 global restructuring.
- Whether Patel’s departure was voluntary, negotiated or part of a targeted executive restructuring.
- Baglino’s private reasons for resigning beyond the formal description in Tesla’s filing and his public statement.
- Whether either departure was connected to a disagreement over a specific product or strategy.
- How every function overseen by Baglino and Patel was reassigned.
- Whether the restructuring ultimately improved productivity enough to offset the loss of senior experience.
Those gaps are important because a resignation during a restructuring can occur in many circumstances, including a straightforward personal decision, a role change, a negotiated exit or a disagreement over the future direction of the organization. The filing’s legal description alone cannot distinguish among them.
Where Baglino and Patel are now
A later update separates the original April 2024 news from the executives’ subsequent careers. Heron Power identifies Drew Baglino as its founder and CEO. Overture identifies Rohan Patel as a venture partner.
Those roles confirm what the April events did not: both executives moved on to new professional chapters. They do not, by themselves, reveal whether their Tesla departures were voluntary, negotiated or connected to the company’s workforce reduction.
The Bottom Line
The accurate takeaway is that Baglino and Patel left Tesla amid a company-wide workforce reduction of more than 10%—not that Tesla publicly confirmed firing or laying off both executives. Baglino resigned effective April 14, 2024; Patel left amid what he described as broad changes. The departures removed senior technical and policy leadership as Tesla faced slowing vehicle growth, falling margins and an organizational push to cut costs, but the public record does not establish a specific motive for either exit or a final April layoff total.
