15 Most Unreliable Car Brands of 2023: What the Rankings Really Meant

The 2023 “15 most unreliable car brands” list was not a universal ranking. Here is what the Consumer Reports-based list measured, why other surveys disagreed, and how to evaluate a specific vehicle.

The 15 brands most often identified as unreliable in the 2023 Consumer Reports-based ranking were Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Volkswagen, GMC, Chevrolet, Tesla, Ford, Cadillac, Ram, Nissan, Volvo, Hyundai, Genesis, Buick, and Lincoln. But that list is not a universal or timeless ranking. It appears to reproduce an earlier Consumer Reports brand table used by TopSpeed’s 2023 article, while Consumer Reports’ official survey released on November 29, 2023 produced a different bottom group that included Chrysler and Rivian.

That distinction matters. “Unreliable” can mean anything from recurring infotainment glitches and faulty trim to engine, transmission, battery, or charging failures. A brand average is useful for screening, but it cannot tell you whether a specific model year, engine, transmission, hybrid system, or EV is a good purchase.

First, what does “of 2023” mean?

Lists with this title can be referring to four different things:

Interpretation What it describes Relevant evidence
Published in 2023 A ranking or buying article released during calendar year 2023. The publisher’s publication date.
2023 model year Vehicles sold as MY2023 cars, trucks, and SUVs. Model-year reliability and recall data.
2023 survey or report Data released in 2023, often concerning older vehicles or recent owner experiences. Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, and other survey methodologies.
Cars available to buy in 2023 A shopping guide intended for new vehicles on sale that year. Predicted reliability and owner-survey data.

These meanings are not interchangeable. For example, J.D. Power’s 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed owners of primarily 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It measured long-term dependability, not the reliability of brand-new 2023 vehicles.

By contrast, Consumer Reports’ November 2023 survey asked owners about problems experienced during the previous 12 months and used those results to predict how newer vehicles would perform. This article treats the 15-brand list as a historical Consumer Reports-based ranking associated with 2023, not as a definitive ranking for every 2023 model or a current 2026 buying list.

The 15 most unreliable brands in the cited 2023 ranking

The following ordering is the list reproduced in the TopSpeed-style coverage. The reported scores are on Consumer Reports’ 1-to-100 predicted-reliability scale, where a higher number is better. They should be attributed to that ranking rather than presented as an independently calculated master list.

Rank Brand Reported predicted-reliability score Main takeaway
1 Mercedes-Benz 24/100* The lowest-rated brand in this particular list; the GLE was cited as a weak model.
2 Jeep 30/100 Several models were below average, but the Compass was an exception in the later 2023 survey.
3 Volkswagen 31/100 The Taos was a major problem area in Consumer Reports’ later survey.
4 GMC 36/100 The Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, and redesigned Canyon pulled the brand down.
5 Chevrolet 40/100 The broad lineup makes the brand average difficult to apply to one vehicle.
6 Tesla 40/100 Quality, software, body, and electronics complaints are not the same as motor or battery failure.
7 Ford 41/100 Reliability varied sharply by model and powertrain.
8 Cadillac 42/100 Premium repair and electronics costs make recurring problems more consequential.
9 Ram 42/100 Truck usage, towing, engine choice, and equipment have a major effect on ownership risk.
10 Nissan 44/100 Model, transmission, engine, and maintenance differences matter more than the brand average.
11 Volvo 45/100 The XC60 and XC90 were below average in the later 2023 CR survey.
12 Hyundai 46/100 Engine family, model generation, hybrid system, and warranty terms need to be checked.
13 Genesis 52/100 The GV70 and GV80 were below average, while other Genesis models were average.
14 Buick 54/100 The Encore GX was cited as a weak model despite Buick’s strong J.D. Power result.
15 Lincoln 54/100 The Aviator was the primary negative example; the Corsair performed better.

*The Mercedes-Benz figure needs a qualification. TopSpeed-related references report 24/100, while a Kelley Blue Book reproduction of an earlier Consumer Reports table gives Mercedes-Benz 26/100. The difference may reflect a different release, revision, rounding, or transcription error.

How Consumer Reports measured reliability

Consumer Reports’ November 2023 Annual Auto Reliability Survey gathered owner reports concerning more than 330,000 vehicles. It included model years 2000 through 2023, plus some newly introduced 2024 vehicles, and examined 20 potential trouble areas. The survey covered problems involving engines, transmissions, electric motors, EV batteries, charging systems, in-car electronics, climate systems, body hardware, paint, trim, and other components. The full methodology is described in Consumer Reports’ reliability FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This was not a physical test of 330,000 cars. It was an owner survey, and participation was voluntary. Consumer Reports asks owners to report specific problems rather than simply give an overall impression. It also adjusts its analysis for factors such as mileage and gives more weight to serious, expensive, or disruptive failures than to minor annoyances. Its 20 trouble areas can include both a malfunctioning transmission and a faulty infotainment feature.

Consequently, a low score does not automatically mean that every vehicle from that brand is likely to leave its owner stranded. It does mean that the brand or its models generated more reported trouble than better-rated competitors in the particular survey being discussed.

Brand-by-brand analysis

1. Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz ranked last in the cited TopSpeed/Consumer Reports-based list, with a reported score of 24/100. The GLE was identified as the brand’s weakest model in the associated coverage, and Consumer Reports’ November 2023 release placed Mercedes-Benz last among European brands and 29th overall.

The important qualification is that Mercedes-Benz is not a single reliability proposition. A GLE, E-Class, compact crossover, and high-performance AMG derivative can use different engines, transmissions, electronics, and suspension systems. A model-specific history is more useful than assuming every Mercedes has the same failure rate. For example, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliability page should be examined separately from the GLE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Luxury vehicles also make moderate reliability problems more expensive. Air suspension, advanced driver-assistance systems, electronic modules, specialized diagnostic equipment, and premium labor rates can turn a repair that is merely inconvenient on a mainstream vehicle into a substantial ownership expense.

2. Jeep

Jeep’s low brand position is more meaningful when broken down by model. In Consumer Reports’ November 2023 release, the Compass was the only Jeep listed with average reliability. The Gladiator, Renegade, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L were below average.

The Wrangler and Gladiator deserve a usage-based evaluation. Off-road driving, water crossings, solid-axle hardware, suspension components, larger tires, and aftermarket modifications can create stresses that do not occur in ordinary commuting. The Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L introduce a different set of risks, including complex electronics, driveline components, and luxury equipment. A buyer who needs trail capability may reasonably accept more maintenance than a buyer seeking a quiet, trouble-free commuter.

The Compass is a useful exception: “Jeep is unreliable” is too broad when one model in the same survey performed around average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Volkswagen

Volkswagen’s reported 31/100 score placed it near the bottom of the cited ranking. In the later 2023 Consumer Reports survey, the Taos was one of the least reliable vehicles. Reported problem areas included brakes, electrical accessories, the transmission, engine, electric system, in-car electronics, and noises or leaks.

It is also an ideal travel emergency kit for women, men, adults and teens to handle any trouble on the road

That result should not be applied identically to every Volkswagen. Model generations, engines, transmissions, software versions, and production changes differ. A used-car buyer should look for the exact model year and powertrain, confirm that all software campaigns and recalls were completed, and obtain service records showing the required maintenance was performed.

4. GMC

Consumer Reports identified the Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, and redesigned Canyon as below average in its November 2023 survey. The Sierra 1500 was associated with reported lifter-related engine problems, paint and trim issues, and in-car electronics trouble. The Sierra 2500/3500HD and Terrain were described as average in that survey, illustrating the limits of the GMC brand average.

A full-size pickup used for towing or commercial work is also not directly comparable with a lightly used crossover. When evaluating a GMC, ask whether it has a gas or diesel engine, how much it has towed, whether it has air suspension or extensive electronic equipment, and whether it has spent most of its life in severe-duty service.

5. Chevrolet

Chevrolet’s reported 40/100 score should be treated as a screening flag, not a verdict on every Chevrolet. The brand sells trucks, crossovers, large SUVs, sports cars, sedans, hybrids, and EVs across multiple platforms and generations. A Silverado, Bolt, Tahoe, Equinox, Corvette, and Malibu do not share an identical reliability profile.

For that reason, the right question is not “Is Chevrolet reliable?” but “How did this exact Chevrolet model, engine, transmission, battery system, and model year perform?” Check for model-specific recalls, technical service information, owner complaints, warranty extensions, and service records before making a purchase decision.

6. Tesla

Tesla’s low position should not be simplified into “Tesla electric motors and batteries are unreliable.” Reliability surveys count many systems beyond the propulsion motor. Tesla-related complaints can involve body-panel fit and finish, paint and trim, electrical accessories, infotainment, software, charging equipment, service availability, and repair turnaround.

Consumer Reports’ November 2023 survey found that new EVs averaged 79% more reported problems than internal-combustion vehicles, while plug-in hybrids averaged 146% more. Conventional hybrids averaged 26% fewer reported problems than gasoline-only vehicles. These are averages of reported trouble areas, not a prediction that every EV will suffer a catastrophic battery failure.

For a Tesla or another EV, check battery and charging coverage, local service capacity, repair-part availability, software history, panel and glass condition, charging performance, and whether the vehicle has been repaired after a collision. A vehicle that is mechanically sound can still be a poor fit if its owner must wait weeks for service.

7. Ford

Ford is one of the clearest examples of why brand rankings should not decide a purchase by themselves. In the November 2023 Consumer Reports release, the Maverick and Edge were above average, while the F-150, F-150 Lightning, Escape, Bronco, Bronco Sport, and Explorer were below average.

The F-150 Hybrid was among the least reliable models in the survey. Owners reported problems involving the transmission, drive system, exhaust, and hybrid battery. F-150 Lightning owners reported EV or hybrid-battery issues. These concerns do not mean every F-150 or Ford electrified vehicle has the same risk, but they do make the exact powertrain and model year essential parts of the evaluation.

8. Cadillac

Cadillac’s reported 42/100 score reflects a lineup containing premium SUVs and technologically complex vehicles. Potential trouble areas in a luxury vehicle can include infotainment, electronic control modules, suspension and steering systems, and powertrain-specific components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reliability is separate from safety, driving dynamics, materials, and luxury quality. A Cadillac can be safe and enjoyable to drive while still having a higher probability of electronic or mechanical trouble than a top-ranked competitor. Parts and labor costs also tend to be higher, so buyers should price routine service, tires, brakes, and electronic repairs—not just the purchase price.

9. Ram

Ram’s reported 42/100 score needs to be interpreted in the context of pickup-truck ownership. Gas and diesel engines, half-ton and heavy-duty configurations, towing frequency, payload, commercial mileage, air suspension, and electronic equipment can all change the repair profile.

J.D. Power’s 2023 study found Ram owners reported 189 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with an industry average of 186. That is a separate measurement from Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability score, but it also placed Ram slightly worse than the study average. A lightly used gas-powered truck and a heavily worked diesel with extensive towing history should not be judged as equivalent vehicles.

10. Nissan

Nissan’s position in the cited list does not provide enough information to condemn every Nissan. Evaluate the exact transmission, engine, model generation, and maintenance history. Particular attention is warranted when comparing CVT-equipped models with vehicles using newer conventional automatic transmissions, but broad claims such as “all Nissan CVTs fail” ignore differences in model year, transmission design, maintenance, symptoms, and use.

For a used Nissan, inspect transmission operation when cold and hot, review fluid-service records where applicable, check for warranty extensions or service campaigns, and have an independent technician scan the vehicle and road-test it under normal conditions.

11. Volvo

Volvo’s reported 45/100 score may surprise shoppers who associate the brand primarily with safety. Safety and reliability are separate attributes: a vehicle can provide excellent occupant protection while experiencing frequent electronic, climate-control, or mechanical problems.

In Consumer Reports’ November 2023 release, the XC60 and XC90 were below average, while the XC40 and S60/V60 were average. XC60 owners reported issues involving brakes, in-car electronics, climate systems, and electrical accessories. XC60 plug-in-hybrid owners also reported additional EV-battery and charging-system problems.

When considering a Volvo, identify whether it is gasoline-powered, mild-hybrid, or plug-in hybrid, then check battery coverage, software updates, dealer capability, and repair costs in your area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Hyundai

Hyundai’s reported 46/100 score is not a complete description of the brand. Reliability can vary substantially by engine family, model generation, transmission, hybrid system, and electronics package.

Before buying a Hyundai, investigate the specific engine and model year for documented recalls, oil-consumption or engine-replacement programs, dual-clutch transmission concerns, infotainment problems, and electrical issues. Also verify warranty transferability and exclusions. A long original warranty can reduce financial exposure, but it does not necessarily eliminate downtime, diagnostic disputes, or transportation costs while a vehicle is being repaired.

13. Genesis

Genesis reported a stronger 52/100 score in the cited ranking than most of the brands above it, but the later Consumer Reports survey still showed a mixed lineup. The GV70 and GV80 were below average, while the GV60, G70, and G80 were average.

That spread is important for a young luxury brand. Sophisticated electronics, premium features, turbocharged powertrains, and relatively limited long-term data for some models can make a brand average less informative. Confirm that the selling dealer or local authorized service center can support the exact vehicle, and check the terms of any remaining comprehensive, powertrain, or battery warranty.

14. Buick

Buick’s reported 54/100 score placed it near the bottom of the cited TopSpeed-based list, and the Encore GX was identified as a weak model. Secondary coverage associated the Encore GX with reported concerns involving brakes, the engine, fuel-system components, and emissions equipment.

Yet Buick ranked second among mass-market brands in J.D. Power’s 2023 dependability study, with 159 problems per 100 vehicles. That is not a contradiction to hide. It shows that different studies can produce very different results because they measure different vehicle ages, owner experiences, problem categories, and scoring systems.

A Buick buyer should therefore evaluate the specific model and model year rather than reject the entire brand based on one list.

15. Lincoln

Lincoln’s reported 54/100 score also concealed a substantial model difference. The Aviator was below average in Consumer Reports’ November 2023 survey, while the Corsair was average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reported Aviator trouble areas included body hardware, noises and leaks, electronics, the drive system, suspension, steering, paint and trim, and seals. Because the Aviator is a premium SUV, repair costs, diagnostic time, and electronic-module issues can be more consequential than the same frequency of minor problems on a simpler mainstream vehicle.

Why other 2023 rankings disagree

Consumer Reports’ official November 29, 2023 release produced a materially different bottom group. Secondary coverage of that survey reported these lowest-scoring brands:

Brand Reported predicted-reliability score
Chrysler 18
Mercedes-Benz 23
Rivian 24
Jeep 26
Volkswagen 26
Volvo 28
GMC 36
Lincoln 38
Dodge 42
Chevrolet 43
Audi 43
Genesis 44
Nissan 45
Cadillac 45
Ram 46

Chrysler, Rivian, Dodge, and Audi appear in this official-survey bottom group but not in the TopSpeed-style 15. Buick, Ford, Hyundai, and Tesla appear in the TopSpeed-style list but not in the official bottom 15 shown above. The most defensible explanation is that the lists draw from different Consumer Reports presentations, survey releases, eligibility rules, or snapshots of the data.

Do not combine the two tables into one ranking. The key conclusion is not that one source is necessarily wrong; it is that “the 15 most unreliable brands of 2023” has no single universally accepted answer.

Consumer Reports versus J.D. Power

J.D. Power provides a useful long-term counterpoint, but its results cannot be placed directly beside Consumer Reports’ 1-to-100 scores.

Difference Consumer Reports reliability survey J.D. Power 2023 VDS
What it measures Problems reported during the previous 12 months and predicted reliability for newer vehicles. Dependability after approximately three years of ownership.
Vehicle population More than 330,000 vehicles, covering model years 2000–2023 plus some early 2024 vehicles. More than 30,000 original owners, primarily of 2020 model-year vehicles.
Scoring Predicted reliability on a 1–100 scale; higher is better. Problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100; lower is better.
Problem scope 20 trouble areas, with serious problems weighted more heavily. 184 problem areas across nine categories.

J.D. Power’s complete 2023 brand table reported the following results. The lower the PP100 number, the better the result. Tesla’s entry carries a footnote in the original table, so its eligibility and treatment should be read with the original PDF footnotes.

Brand Problems per 100 vehicles

This table explains several apparent contradictions. Buick appears near the bottom of the TopSpeed/CR-based list but performed strongly in J.D. Power’s three-year dependability study. Genesis was relatively strong by J.D. Power’s measure but mixed in Consumer Reports’ newer-vehicle prediction. Chevrolet and Cadillac also moved substantially depending on the study. Different methods are answering different questions.

What an unreliable score does—and does not—tell you

It does not mean every vehicle will break down

Brand scores are averages. A brand can be pulled down by one redesigned model, one engine family, one transmission, one hybrid or plug-in-hybrid system, or one low-volume luxury vehicle. Ford’s above-average Maverick and Edge alongside several below-average models demonstrate this pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not mean every problem is a breakdown

Reliability data can include infotainment glitches, climate-control faults, failed electrical accessories, body-hardware problems, noises, leaks, and paint or trim issues. Those problems can be irritating or expensive without immobilizing the vehicle. Major engine, transmission, drive-system, battery, and safety-related failures deserve a different level of concern.

It is not the same as safety

A vehicle’s crash protection and its dependability are separate measurements. Volvo’s safety reputation, for example, should not be treated as proof of reliability, but a below-average reliability result should not be misrepresented as evidence that the vehicle is unsafe.

It is not the same as recall frequency

A recall is a manufacturer or government-recognized safety or compliance action requiring a remedy. Reliability surveys capture owner-reported problems that may never result in a recall. A single large recall does not automatically establish that a brand has a high failure rate, and a vehicle can have many reliability complaints without a recall.

Check open safety recalls using the vehicle identification number through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup. A recall search is necessary, but it is not a substitute for reliability research or a mechanical inspection.

It is not a failure rate

Complaint totals are not failure rates. High-volume brands sell more vehicles and can naturally produce more complaints. Owner surveys also have selection limitations: Consumer Reports says its survey population comes from members and participation is voluntary. These sources are useful indicators, not a census of every vehicle on the road.

How powertrains change the reliability equation

Two vehicles wearing the same badge may have very different reliability risks. Compare the gasoline, conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric versions separately.

  • Gasoline vehicles: Evaluate the engine, transmission, turbocharger, cooling system, emissions equipment, and start-stop system.
  • Conventional hybrids: Check the hybrid battery warranty, inverter, electric motor, regenerative-braking system, and gasoline engine. In Consumer Reports’ 2023 survey, conventional hybrids averaged fewer reported problems than gasoline-only vehicles.
  • Plug-in hybrids: Assess both the gasoline and electric systems, plus charging hardware and software. The same CR survey found more reported problems for PHEVs than for conventional hybrids or gasoline vehicles.
  • EVs: Look beyond the absence of an internal-combustion engine. Battery thermal management, charging hardware, drive motors, software, infotainment, electrical accessories, body hardware, and service availability all matter.

Consumer Reports reported that new EVs averaged 79% more problems than internal-combustion vehicles and PHEVs averaged 146% more, while conventional hybrids averaged 26% fewer. Those are survey averages across reported trouble areas—not evidence that every EV is mechanically unreliable or that every hybrid is trouble-free.

A better way to evaluate one of these brands

Use the brand ranking as a warning to investigate, not as an automatic “do not buy” list. Apply this process to the exact vehicle:

  1. Identify the model and model year. Do not stop at the badge. A 2023 Jeep Compass and a 2023 Grand Cherokee are different purchase decisions.
  2. Identify the powertrain. Record the engine, transmission, hybrid system, battery size, drivetrain, and important options.
  3. Research model-specific reliability. Look for repeated problems across the same generation, not just isolated online anecdotes.
  4. Check the VIN for recalls. Use the NHTSA lookup and confirm that completed recall repairs are documented.
  5. Ask about technical service bulletins and warranty programs. A technical service bulletin is not automatically a recall, but it may reveal a known issue and the manufacturer’s repair procedure. Dealers and manufacturer customer-service departments can confirm whether a specific vehicle has coverage or a warranty extension.
  6. Obtain maintenance records. Look for correct oil, transmission-fluid, coolant, brake, and hybrid or EV service, as applicable. Missing records increase uncertainty.
  7. Verify warranty terms. Check whether the warranty transfers to a second owner, whether battery and hybrid components have separate coverage, and what exclusions apply.
  8. Get an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have the technician scan for stored fault codes, inspect leaks and suspension components, evaluate the transmission, and check for evidence of collision or flood damage.
  9. Assess local support. Confirm that parts, qualified independent shops, dealer service appointments, and EV or luxury-brand expertise are available nearby.
  10. Price total ownership cost. Include insurance, tires, brakes, routine service, diagnostic fees, towing, rental transportation, and likely repair labor—not merely the purchase price.

A practical decision framework

Before rejecting or buying a brand, ask seven questions:

  1. How good is the evidence? Is it a primary survey? How many owners and vehicles were included? What ages and model years were studied?
  2. How severe are the reported problems? Repeated infotainment resets are not equivalent to engine or battery failures, even though both may affect a score.
  3. How frequent are they? Look for patterns across multiple model years rather than relying on one viral complaint.
  4. How expensive are repairs? Consider parts, labor, software access, special tools, dealer dependency, and warranty coverage.
  5. Is the problem concentrated? Determine whether one model, engine, transmission, redesigned generation, or electrified variant is responsible for much of the brand’s result.
  6. How will you use the vehicle? Towing, off-roading, commercial mileage, cold-weather operation, and short urban trips can create different stresses.
  7. How strong is the support network? A vehicle with known minor problems may be acceptable if it has strong warranty coverage and easy access to affordable repairs. A vehicle with a moderate score may be a poor choice if parts and qualified service are difficult to obtain.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a 2023 ranking as a current 2026 ranking. Reliability surveys are updated annually, and brand performance changes as models are redesigned.
  • Mixing survey years. Do not combine the TopSpeed-style table with the official November 2023 CR bottom group as though they were one dataset.
  • Confusing predicted reliability with dependability. Consumer Reports’ score and J.D. Power’s PP100 are not interchangeable.
  • Assuming a high-rated brand guarantees a good used car. A highly rated brand can still have a poorly maintained example, a first-year redesign, a serious recall, or a problematic powertrain.
  • Assuming a recall proves unreliability. Recalls and owner-reported reliability problems overlap sometimes, but they measure different things.
  • Repeating broad powertrain claims without details. Claims about Nissan CVTs, Hyundai engines, EV batteries, or diesel trucks must be tied to a specific model, transmission, engine family, model year, and maintenance history.
  • Ignoring new-model uncertainty. First-year redesigns may have limited direct reliability data, so predictions may rely partly on brand history, shared components, or related models.
  • Choosing solely by brand reputation. The vehicle’s actual condition and service history usually matter more than a logo on the grille.

Bottom line for shoppers

The cited 15-brand list is useful as a historical warning, but it is not proof that every Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Volkswagen, GMC, Chevrolet, Tesla, Ford, Cadillac, Ram, Nissan, Volvo, Hyundai, Genesis, Buick, or Lincoln is a bad purchase. The later official Consumer Reports survey produced a different bottom five, and J.D. Power’s three-year dependability results differed again.

The reliable buying decision is model-, powertrain-, model-year-, and condition-specific. Use rankings to identify what deserves closer inspection, then verify the VIN, recalls, service history, warranty coverage, local repair support, and independent inspection before committing your money.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the least reliable car brand in 2023?

Mercedes-Benz ranked last in the cited TopSpeed/Consumer Reports-based list, with a reported score of 24/100. However, Consumer Reports’ official November 2023 survey ranked Chrysler lowest, followed by Mercedes-Benz and Rivian. The answer depends on which 2023 list is being used.

Does a low brand reliability score mean every model should be avoided?

No. Brand averages can conceal large differences between models, engines, transmissions, and model years. For example, the 2023 Consumer Reports survey found the Jeep Compass around average while several other Jeep models were below average, and Ford’s Maverick and Edge performed better than several other Ford models.

Are Consumer Reports and J.D. Power reliability scores comparable?

No. Consumer Reports uses a 1-to-100 predicted-reliability score, where higher is better. J.D. Power’s 2023 study used problems per 100 vehicles and surveyed owners of primarily 2020 vehicles after three years. Its score is better when lower.

Are recalls proof that a car brand is unreliable?

No. A recall is a safety or compliance action for a known defect. Reliability surveys include a broader range of owner-reported problems, including issues that never lead to a recall. Check recalls by VIN, but also review model-specific reliability data and maintenance records.

What should I check before buying a used vehicle from one of these brands?

Identify the exact model year and powertrain, check the VIN for open recalls, review service and repair records, verify warranty transfer rules, inspect known trouble areas, confirm local parts and service support, and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection.

The Bottom Line

These 15 brands were warning signs in one 2023 Consumer Reports-based ranking—not automatic no-buy choices. The best decision comes from checking the exact model, powertrain, model year, VIN, recall history, warranty, maintenance records, and condition.
