Tesla’s Cybercab has moved beyond its October 2024 unveiling: the company says production began at Gigafactory Texas in 2026, production vehicles started public-road engineering tests, and employee rides began on the factory campus. Tesla also now publishes a rider guide with cabin controls and safety procedures. But public Cybercab rides remain limited to parts of Austin, Texas, and the reviewed official materials do not provide a consumer price or general retail order page.
What changed since Tesla unveiled the Cybercab?
The title’s “one year after” framing needs a calendar qualification: Tesla unveiled the Cybercab in October 2024, so the October 8, 2026 information considered here comes shortly before the second anniversary. The more useful comparison is between the original unveiling and Tesla’s later production, service, and rider-facing disclosures.
| When | What Tesla disclosed |
|---|---|
| October 2024 | Tesla unveiled the Cybercab as a vehicle designed from the ground up for autonomy, without a steering wheel or pedals. Its Q3 2024 update estimated 5.5 mi/kWh for the next-generation powertrain; that was an estimate at the time, not a current range rating. Tesla Q3 2024 update |
| Q2 2026 | Tesla said Cybercab production had begun at Gigafactory Texas. It also reported public-road engineering test drives of production Cybercabs during the quarter and employee rides on the Texas factory campus beginning in July, describing both as precursors to fleet deployment. This establishes a production start, not mass-market production volume. Tesla Q2 2026 update |
| September 22, 2026 | Tesla published a North America Rider Guide with details about passenger controls, cabin features, and procedures. Tesla Cybercab Rider Guide |
| Checked October 8, 2026 | Tesla’s support FAQ described Cybercab rides in limited areas of Austin, Texas, and provided a commercial-purpose purchase inquiry route. Tesla Cybercab FAQ |
What is the Cybercab, and does it have a steering wheel or pedals?
Tesla describes Cybercab as a purpose-built, two-seat Robotaxi. It has no steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal. Tesla says it uses camera vision and sensors for driving; that is the company’s description, not independent verification of safety or capability. Its FAQ calls the vehicle a golden two-seater with butterfly doors and a large interactive touchscreen.
What riders find in the cabin
- A touchscreen for opening and closing the doors, starting the ride, adjusting the temperature and seats, and playing media.
- A cabin camera that helps track occupancy.
- USB-C charging ports.
- A Stop button that requests an immediate pull-over, ends the ride, and connects the passenger with Robotaxi Support. Tesla says to use it for emergencies.
- No front trunk; the hood cannot be opened by riders.
These cabin and control details are in Tesla’s North America Rider Guide.

Can you ride in a Cybercab, and where is service available?
Tesla’s Cybercab FAQ says rides are available in limited areas of Austin, Texas. The company’s broader Robotaxi program covers additional US markets, but those locations should not be taken as Cybercab service areas. Tesla’s Q2 2026 update listed San Francisco Bay Area service with a safety driver; Austin, Dallas, and Houston as ramping unsupervised; Miami, Orlando, and Tampa as ramping unsupervised; and Phoenix and Las Vegas as in preparation. Those are Robotaxi program-level statuses, not confirmation that Cybercabs operate in each city. Tesla says active driver supervision is required for its supervised category and that this does not make the vehicle autonomous. Its California service footnote cites permit TCP0046782. How a Cybercab ride works
- Match the vehicle’s license plate with the one shown in the app.
- Enter when the door opens and buckle the seat belt.
- Tap “Start Ride” in the app.
Tesla says a vehicle waits seven minutes at pickup; after that, fees may apply or the ride may be canceled. At launch, riders cannot choose between a Cybercab and a Model Y Robotaxi: Tesla says assignment depends on availability and party size. See the Cybercab FAQ for the company’s current rider instructions.

Age and accessibility information
Tesla says children under 13 cannot ride in a Cybercab. Riders aged 13–17 must be accompanied by an adult. The company describes bench-style seating at wheelchair height, trunk capacity for wheelchairs and assistive devices, cabin space for service animals, and Braille on doors and overhead buttons as accessibility features. Its FAQ allows service animals for disabled riders but not non-service animals. These are Tesla’s design and policy descriptions, not an independent accessibility assessment. Tesla Cybercab FAQ
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you buy a Tesla Cybercab?
Tesla provides an inquiry form for commercial-purpose Cybercab purchases. The official materials reviewed do not provide a consumer order page, price, or delivery schedule. That leaves a distinction between Tesla’s stated production start and an individual buyer being able to order one through a general retail channel. Tesla Cybercab FAQ

What Tesla has not disclosed
Tesla’s current Cybercab FAQ and rider guide do not give a current EPA range, charging duration, price, or delivery timing, nor do they establish broad service availability beyond limited areas of Austin. The 5.5 mi/kWh figure in Tesla’s 2024 update was an estimate for a next-generation powertrain; without a battery-capacity figure and a validated basis, it cannot be turned into a reliable range estimate. Tesla’s announcements establish what the company says about its program, not independent proof of autonomy, safety performance, or commercial scale.
