Elon Musk reportedly said Tesla was close to allowing drivers to text while using Full Self-Driving, but that remark is not the same as a released feature, Tesla authorization, or legal permission. Tesla’s current guidance says FSD is supervised, the driver must stay attentive, and its Model S manual says not to use handheld devices while Self-Driving features are engaged.
What did Elon Musk say about texting with FSD?
At Tesla’s November 6, 2025, shareholders meeting, Musk reportedly said the company was “almost” ready to allow “texting and driving” with FSD and expected it within “a month or two.” The report also said he would review safety data before allowing it. Those comments describe a reported intention and timeline, not confirmation that Tesla subsequently released the feature. Electrek’s November 6 report
On December 4, 2025, when asked whether FSD v14.2.1 allowed texting, Musk reportedly replied: “Depending on context of surrounding traffic, yes.” That is his reported response—not an official Tesla feature specification, a finding that texting is safe, or a legal ruling. What does Tesla’s current guidance say?
Tesla calls the consumer system Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Its support page says the system does not make the vehicle autonomous, requires active driver supervision, and leaves the driver responsible for speed and control at all times. Tesla Autopilot and Full Self-Driving support

Tesla’s Model S Owner’s Manual is more explicit about handheld devices: “Do not use handheld devices while using Self-Driving features.” It says the driver must pay attention to the road, surroundings, and other road users; the cabin camera monitors attentiveness and can issue reminders when the driver repeatedly looks away. The manual also says a detected handheld device can prompt an attention reminder. Circumventing attentiveness monitoring violates the terms of use and may result in permanent feature disablement. That manual is for Model S, so its specific wording and monitoring details should not automatically be assumed to apply identically to every Tesla model, configuration, or software version. Check the manual and in-car instructions for the vehicle you drive.

Does FSD let you text and drive?
Musk’s reported comments suggest he was considering or describing texting in some traffic contexts. Tesla’s written guidance, however, still describes a supervised driver-assistance system and the Model S manual expressly says not to use handheld devices during Self-Driving features. The available statements do not establish that a generally available texting feature has been formally approved or released.
Software behavior, Tesla’s instructions, and the law are separate questions. Even if a particular software build permits some interaction or does not issue an alert, that does not establish that Tesla authorizes handheld texting or that it is lawful where you are driving. Laws vary by jurisdiction, and the statements above do not resolve local rules or any exception for supervised driver assistance. Check the law in your location rather than treating Musk’s reported response as permission.

Why the distinction matters
FSD’s name can sound more autonomous than Tesla’s own current description. In a May 14, 2024, letter, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation said some Tesla social-media posts might encourage viewers to interpret FSD-Supervised as a chauffeur or “Robotaxi,” rather than a partial-automation or driver-assistance system that requires persistent attention and intermittent driver intervention. The sources cited here do not provide an independently verified safety statistic establishing that texting while using FSD is safe. Musk’s reported reference to reviewing safety data should not be mistaken for a published safety finding.

What to do if you use FSD
- Keep your attention on driving and remain ready to control the vehicle.
- Follow the instructions for your specific vehicle and software version; Tesla’s Model S manual says not to use handheld devices during Self-Driving features.
- Check the handheld-device law where you drive. A reported statement from Musk does not change local law.
