Tesla’s China launches address two different needs: the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 Long Range is a range-focused sedan, while the Model YL adds a longer wheelbase, three rows and six seats to the Model Y family. Early reports called the sedan “Model 3+” or “Model 3 Plus”; launch coverage used Model 3 Long Range. A later reported price cut for the sedan adds a concrete sign of price pressure, but does not by itself establish what is driving the wider EV market.
What Tesla launched in China
The two variants are not a single product strategy. The Model 3 Long Range is a rear-wheel-drive sedan emphasizing certified range. The Model YL is a larger Model Y derivative intended to offer more passenger space and seating capacity.

Specifications in the table are reported from Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filings, not independent road tests. Prices are dated reports, not live quotes.
Why early coverage called it Model 3 Plus
“Model 3+” and “Model 3 Plus” appeared in early reporting about the MIIT listing. When Tesla opened orders in China on Aug. 12, launch coverage identified the rear-wheel-drive variant as the Model 3 Long Range. That launch name is the clearest one to use; “Plus” helps explain the earlier headlines, but should not be mistaken for the name used in launch reporting. What the Model 3’s 830-km range means
The maximum 830-km figure is a China CLTC certification value attributed to the MIIT filing. The same reporting gives 800 km for an alternate configuration. Neither number is a promise of everyday driving distance: road speed, temperature, terrain, load and driving style affect range. These are not EPA or WLTP figures, so they should not be compared directly with ratings from those different test cycles without accounting for the test method. The launch report also gave a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 5.2 seconds. MIIT-attributed specifications list a 225-kW rear motor and a 78.4-kWh LG-supplied NMC battery. How the Model YL differs from the standard Model Y
The Model YL is a longer-wheelbase derivative, not simply a new name for the standard five-seat Model Y. Tesla’s Q3 2025 company update described it as “a longer wheelbase version of the Model Y with 6 seats and 3 rows,” and said it had launched in China. MIIT-attributed reporting lists the wheelbase at 3,040 mm, the range at 751 km CLTC and the battery at 82 kWh with NMC chemistry. [Tesla Q3 2025 company update; CarNewsChina; Electrive]
That layout points to buyers who need three rows and six individual seats rather than the Model 3’s sedan shape and range-oriented setup. Tesla’s update confirms the China launch and seating arrangement, but does not provide a complete technical specification or establish availability in other countries.

How the reported prices changed
At the Model 3 Long Range launch on Aug. 12, 2025, CarNewsChina reported a 269,500-yuan price. Reuters reported on Aug. 31 that Tesla had reduced the rear-wheel-drive Model 3’s price by 3.7% to 259,500 yuan. Does this prove China’s EV price war is intensifying?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Tesla introduced new China-market variants and subsequently cut the reported price of its rear-wheel-drive Model 3. The 3.7% reduction is a concrete price move and fits a competitive market context. Where these models are available
The sources confirm the Model YL launch and the Model 3 Long Range order opening in China. They do not establish sales or planned exports of either variant outside China.
