Calling Tesla’s Cybertruck an “absolute monstrosity” is an opinion, not an engineering finding. The case for that verdict is that its stark, angular stainless-steel form makes visual coherence and everyday care part of the same trade-off: Tesla says the material and manufacturing choices serve engineering goals, but its own guidance also asks owners to treat the bare metal with care.
Why the Cybertruck looks this way
Tesla presents the Cybertruck’s shape and surface as deliberate engineering choices, not styling applied after the fact. In its 2025 technology and architecture presentation, the company describes a “cold-rolled full hard stainless steel exoskeleton” that it says carries crash loads and increases torsional stiffness. Tesla also says it developed an air-bending process to form full-hard stainless steel without touching it, and lists dent and corrosion resistance among the benefits. Those are Tesla’s claims, not independent proof that the design succeeds aesthetically or that every claimed benefit has been independently confirmed. Tesla’s SEC-filed presentation lays out that rationale.

That explanation makes the styling easier to understand, but it does not settle whether the result works as a vehicle design. The useful question is whether the visible form and the material’s real-world demands justify the engineering rationale. On appearance, the Cybertruck is unmistakable; whether that kind of recognition reads as coherence or excess is a matter of taste, not a measured verdict established by the available evidence.
What the stainless-steel finish asks of owners
Tesla says the stainless exterior is more resistant to dents and dings than most other vehicles. The company also says the Cybertruck has no clear coat, so scratches appear in the stainless-steel panels themselves. That distinction matters: a material can have a claimed advantage against dents while still requiring care to avoid visible marks or discoloration. Tesla’s exterior-care instructions describe how it wants owners to maintain the surface.

Tesla recommends rinsing away grime and grit before washing, then using a soft sponge and mild pH-neutral soap. Rinse the vehicle clean and dry it with clean microfiber cloths. The company cautions against acidic, highly alkaline or caustic cleaners, as well as rough cloths, and does not recommend automatic car washes. It also advises prompt removal of corrosive substances. These are manufacturer care instructions, not evidence that the finish is uniquely difficult compared with every other vehicle; they do show that the bare-metal look comes with specific upkeep considerations.
What the cantrail recall does—and does not—show
Tesla’s cantrail replacement notice covers all model year 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. Tesla says a stainless-steel cantrail panel may delaminate at its adhesive joint and separate, potentially creating a road hazard. The company says it will replace the assembly at no charge, with the work taking approximately one hour, and asks owners to check eligibility by VIN. Tesla says affected owners may continue driving while it contacts them as parts become available in their region. Tesla’s recall notice gives the scope and remedy; owners can also check recalls through NHTSA.

This is evidence of a specific manufacturing and safety issue with a defined production-date range, not proof that every Cybertruck is affected or that the design as a whole is unsafe. It belongs in an assessment of the truck’s execution, but it cannot stand in for an aesthetic judgment.

It is fair as a clearly labeled reaction if the standard is a vehicle whose design feels visually coherent, whose material choices make ownership straightforward, and whose engineering rationale outweighs the care demands. By that standard, the Cybertruck’s hard-edged stainless exterior can reasonably strike a reader as excessive: its bare finish makes upkeep visible, while Tesla’s own explanation asks the owner to see the shape as a consequence of structural and manufacturing goals.

It would be less fair to present that verdict as a consensus or as a conclusion established by technical specifications. Tesla’s materials explain why the company chose this approach; they do not independently establish that the design is beautiful, practical overall, or superior to alternatives. “Monstrosity” is ultimately a judgment about the balance between the Cybertruck’s striking form and the compromises that accompany it—not a factual rating.
