In the week of Tesla’s first-quarter 2024 earnings report, the company was cutting U.S., Chinese and German Model 3 and Model Y prices by as much as $2,000 while CEO Elon Musk emphasized autonomy as a major future opportunity. The juxtaposition captured Tesla’s challenge: vehicle demand and margins were under pressure, while its longer-term autonomy ambitions still depended on execution. The figures and prices below describe April 2024, not current offers or guidance.
Why Tesla cut prices before earnings
TechCrunch reported on April 23, 2024, that Tesla had reduced Model 3 and Model Y prices by as much as $2,000 in the U.S., China and Germany during the week before its earnings release. Those were reported price reductions, not a single global price change; the article did not establish that every trim or buyer received the same adjustment. TechCrunch’s April 23 report framed the cuts against soft vehicle demand and pressure on margins.

Price cuts can help support sales, but they also mean less revenue per vehicle if other factors do not offset the lower selling price. The earnings-week story therefore raised a business question beyond whether a model became cheaper: could Tesla sustain demand without further weakening vehicle economics? Deliveries alone cannot answer that. Tesla cautions that deliveries and energy storage deployments are only two performance measures and should not be relied on as indicators of quarterly financial results.

How many vehicles did Tesla deliver in Q1 2024?
Tesla delivered 386,810 vehicles in the first quarter of 2024, down from 484,507 in the fourth quarter of 2023. It produced 433,371 vehicles in Q1. Tesla’s April 2 release attributed the lower volume partly to the updated Model 3 production ramp and factory shutdowns associated with Red Sea shipping diversions and an arson attack at Gigafactory Berlin. The same release reported 4,053 MWh of energy storage deployments, which Tesla described as its highest quarterly deployment at that time. Tesla’s Q1 2024 delivery and deployment release also said the company was scheduled to report earnings after market close on April 23.

The gap between production and deliveries is useful context, not a complete explanation of Tesla’s financial performance. To assess the quarter, delivery volume needs to be read alongside reported revenue, profit, gross margin and cash generation. Tesla explicitly warned against treating delivery and energy deployment totals as a proxy for quarterly financial results.
What did Musk’s autonomy push mean?
TechCrunch described Musk’s push as “balls to the wall for autonomy.” The phrase captured the intensity of the strategic emphasis, not an operational milestone: it did not mean Tesla had solved autonomous driving or that customer cars could operate without supervision. The distinction matters because vehicle sales and autonomy are different parts of the investment story. Price reductions addressed near-term demand; autonomy represented a bet on future software and service opportunities.

In the same April 23 article, TechCrunch reported that Tesla had reduced Full Self-Driving (FSD) to $8,000 upfront or $99 per month, from $12,000 and $199 monthly. Those are historical prices reported in April 2024 and should not be taken as current pricing or as a schedule that applied uniformly across markets.

Is Tesla Full Self-Driving actually autonomous?
No. Tesla’s later Q2 2026 results label the product FSD (Supervised) and state: “Active driver supervision required; does not make the vehicle autonomous”. The driver must remain engaged and ready to take over; the product name does not change that requirement. Tesla’s Q2 2026 results also reported that Cybercab production had begun and Robotaxi had rolled out in seven major U.S. metro areas by that quarter. Those company-reported program developments are distinct from establishing that a consumer FSD-equipped car is autonomous.

Robotaxi operations should likewise be judged separately from supervised driver assistance. Relevant measures include where rides operate, how they are supervised, whether service is paid, and whether usage is growing. In July 2026, TechCrunch interpreted Tesla’s chart as showing paid Robotaxi miles declining from about 1.1 million in Q1 to about 700,000 in Q2. Those figures are the publication’s reading of Tesla’s chart, not a separately stated official Tesla KPI. TechCrunch’s July 2026 analysis provides that interpretation.
