No—not across the board. In April 2026, Tesla registrations rose sharply in several European countries but fell in others, while battery-electric registrations increased across the EU. The picture depends on which countries and time period you count; one month’s figures do not establish a lasting recovery or continued slump.
What happened to Tesla registrations in April 2026?
Reuters reported year-over-year changes in Tesla registrations that varied considerably by country. Registrations more than doubled in Sweden, France, and Denmark, increased in the Netherlands, and declined in Norway, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

These are country-level percentage changes, not a single Europe-wide Tesla total. The figures show a split rather than a uniform decline or a continent-wide rebound. Reuters describes registrations as a proxy for sales, but they are not a direct measure of consumer demand.
How did April’s Tesla figures compare with the wider EV market?
Across the EU, new battery-electric passenger-car registrations reached 200,117 in April 2026, up 37.7% from April 2025, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). That is an EU-wide BEV figure—not a Tesla figure and not a total for all of Europe.

For January through April 2026, the EU registered 746,899 new BEVs. They accounted for 19.7% of new-car registrations, up from 15.3% in the same period of 2025. Total EU new-car registrations grew 4.2% year over year in that four-month period, ACEA reported.
A separate summary citing ACEA data put April passenger-car registrations across the EU, EFTA, and the UK at 1,152,315, up 7%, and the year-to-date BEV share for that wider region at 20.9%. Those numbers use a different geographic scope from ACEA’s EU-only totals and should not be compared as though their denominators were identical.

Why do the country results differ?
Norway’s tax threshold
Reuters noted a Norway-specific change: on January 1, 2026, the VAT-free purchase-price threshold for vehicles fell from 500,000 to 300,000 Norwegian crowns. Reuters said the new threshold was below the listed starting prices of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. This is relevant context for Norway’s decline, not an explanation for Tesla’s results across Europe.

Deliveries and year-on-year comparisons
Monthly registrations can move with the timing of deliveries. Reuters cautioned that vehicles arriving from production sites, including by ocean freight, can make country figures volatile from one month to the next. It also noted Tesla’s loss of European market share in 2025, which affects the year-on-year comparison.

Analysts cited by Reuters pointed to new models, improved performance, and higher gasoline prices as possible support for European EV sales this year. SC Insights co-founder Andy Leyland told Reuters: “European EV sales figures are likely to rebound this year owing to a combination of new models, improved performance, and higher gasoline prices.” That is a forecast about the broader EV market, not proof of what caused Tesla’s April results.

April shows improvement in some national markets and further declines in others; it does not settle the broader trend. The EU’s BEV growth is a separate market-wide measure, and registrations in one month cannot establish that Tesla’s gains will persist. The figures covered here concern April 2026 registrations, reported in May; they do not establish what happened in subsequent months.
