Tesla is the buyer in LG Energy Solution’s reported $4.3 billion agreement for U.S.-made LFP prismatic battery cells. The cells are intended for Tesla Megapack 3 energy-storage systems produced in Houston—not Tesla passenger cars. The agreement’s reported supply window begins in August 2027, although LG says production has already started at its Lansing, Michigan, facility.
What Tesla and LG agreed to
The U.S. Department of the Interior identified Tesla as the customer in LG Energy Solution’s $4.3 billion deal, according to Yonhap’s March 17, 2026 report. LG’s original customer disclosure in July 2025 did not name the buyer, as reported by Reuters and Yonhap.
The agreement concerns LFP (lithium iron phosphate) prismatic cells associated with a manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan. It is a supply deal, not evidence that Tesla owns the plant or that the facility is a joint venture. LG describes Lansing as its facility.
These cells are for Megapack 3 energy storage
The stated destination is Tesla’s Megapack 3, a grid-scale energy-storage system produced in Houston. The Interior Department said: “American-made cells will power Tesla’s Megapack 3 energy storage systems produced in Houston, creating a robust domestic battery supply chain.” The deal is therefore about stationary energy storage, not batteries for Tesla cars.

Plant production and Tesla deliveries have different timelines
LG announced that production at its Lansing facility began on August 18, 2026; its announcement was published August 19. Yonhap reported the Tesla supply period as August 1, 2027, through July 31, 2030. A plant beginning production in 2026 does not mean Tesla’s contracted supply starts then.

What LG’s Lansing facility makes
LG says the Lansing facility produces LFP cells for energy-storage systems and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) cells for Toyota vehicles. Its Vertech division integrates storage cells into complete systems for utility, grid-scale, and commercial and industrial applications.

LG says the facility is designed to reach more than 35 GWh of annual battery-making capacity at full scale and expects 1,700 employees at full-scale production. Those are facility-wide targets, not Tesla-specific figures: LG has not disclosed how much capacity or staffing is allocated to this contract.

The reported $4.3 billion headline value and supply window do not reveal the deal’s operating terms. The cited reports do not state contracted cell volumes, unit prices, delivery milestones within the supply period, or the exact amount of Lansing capacity reserved for Tesla. The headline value cannot be used to reliably calculate a per-cell price or Tesla’s share of the plant’s output.

LG’s announcement that the plant is producing cells also does not establish that all LFP cells coming off the Lansing line are destined for Tesla; the company has not published a Tesla-specific allocation.
