Reporting linked the slump to backlash over Elon Musk’s political activity, but also cited the end of the U.S. federal EV tax credit and aging vehicle designs. The available reporting does not measure how much each factor contributed.
Deliveries later rose: Tesla reported 480,126 in Q2 2026 and 486,532 in Q3. Those quarterly figures show a recovery in volume, not that backlash ended or that Tesla’s financial performance improved by the same amount.
What Tesla’s delivery figures show
Tesla’s 2025 total was 1,636,129 vehicles, down 8.6% from the prior year, Axios reported. The company’s Q4 2025 total was 418,227; Axios characterized it as Tesla’s worst fourth-quarter result since 2022. That historical comparison refers specifically to fourth-quarter deliveries, not to a two-year low across every period.
These are delivery counts: vehicles handed over to customers during a period. They are not production figures, orders, revenue, or profit.

Was Musk backlash responsible for the decline?
Backlash connected to Musk’s political activity was one factor cited in reporting about Tesla’s 2025 decline. Axios also pointed to the expiration of the U.S. federal EV tax credit later that year and aging vehicle designs. The sources do not provide a numerical estimate of deliveries lost to backlash or a breakdown of the effect of each factor, so it is not possible to attribute the decline to Musk alone.
The reported context is also not limited to consumer reaction to Musk: policy changes and Tesla’s product lineup were part of the explanation offered for the sales weakness.

How deliveries changed after 2025

The Q2 and Q3 figures indicate higher quarterly delivery volume than the late-2025 result. They should not be compared directly with the full-year 2025 total as though the periods were equivalent. Tesla also produced 464,391 vehicles in Q3 2026; production and deliveries are separate measures.
What may have supported the Q2 increase
AP’s July 2026 report discussed lower-priced Model Y and Model 3 variants, European sales incentives, and a continent-wide rise in EV buying as possible contributors to the Q2 improvement. It suggested the increase might mean the worst of the backlash had passed, but that was an interpretation—not evidence that backlash had ended or that any one factor drove the increase.

Tesla and BYD in 2025
BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles in 2025, compared with Tesla’s 1.64 million deliveries, AP reported. AP said Tesla lost the annual EV sales lead. The figures give the reported 2025 comparison, but the cited coverage does not provide a like-for-like breakdown here by vehicle category or market.

Delivery volume alone cannot establish Tesla’s revenue, profit, or cash flow. In its October 2, 2026 release, Tesla cautioned that deliveries and storage deployments “represent only two measures” of financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results. The company said financial results depend on factors including average selling price, cost of sales, and foreign exchange movements.
