What was seen on the Bay Area highway?
Teslarati reported on August 24, 2024, that a camouflaged vehicle photographed on a Bay Area highway appeared to be a Model Y Juniper prototype. The car’s rear was covered. The report’s approximate speed—about 70 mph—and the idea that the driver seemed to be testing steering came from Reddit user u/sheffield712, who shared the image, rather than from an official Tesla account. Was it testing steering or handling?
The two descriptions are related, but neither establishes Tesla’s test objective. Teslarati relayed the observer’s interpretation that the driver seemed to be testing steering at about 70 mph. In a separate report the next day, Notebookcheck described quick back-and-forth movement within the lane and suggested that a high-speed handling test was a likely explanation. That handling explanation was the outlet’s inference, not a confirmed test plan. Notebookcheck’s August 25 report.
The underlying evidence described by both outlets was a social-media sighting and image. Neither report supplies an official test log, a statement from Tesla confirming the maneuver’s purpose, or an account from a named test engineer. The reported speed and vehicle identification should therefore be understood as details attributed to the sighting and its coverage, not independently verified test specifications.

What did the later Model Y Juniper reveal?
On January 10, 2025, Car and Driver reported that the updated Model Y had appeared on Tesla’s China consumer site. Its reveal coverage described front and rear light bars, available ventilated front seats, a redesigned steering wheel, a rear-seat display, and a traditional stalk-type turn-signal lever. That later reveal helps identify what the Juniper name came to refer to, but it does not show that the August 2024 highway maneuver tested the steering wheel, turn signals, suspension, or any other particular feature.
