A 2024 video report appeared to show a Tesla Cybertruck owner injuring a finger in the vehicle’s powered front trunk, or frunk—not the rear cargo-bed tailgate. The video and reporting do not independently confirm a fracture, but Tesla’s owner’s manual is explicit: keep hands and other objects clear before closing the frunk.
What happened in the Cybertruck frunk video?
In a report published May 7, 2024, Gizmodo reporter Matt Novak described a video by YouTube user Joe Fay. Fay said he would put a finger flat against the Cybertruck’s closing frunk after viewers questioned an earlier demonstration. The report says he first tried a stick, which broke, and then directs readers to the video showing his next attempt. Novak described the clip as appearing to show Fay breaking his finger.
That is a video-described injury, not a medically verified fracture. The report does not provide independent medical documentation, an official Tesla investigation, a regulator finding, or vehicle-specific software or configuration details for the incident. Read Gizmodo’s May 7, 2024 report.
What does Tesla say about keeping hands clear?
Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual, displaying software version 2026.32 when checked, warns: “Ensure that all hands and other objects are free of the powered frunk before closing it.” It also says: “Use caution around the panel edges on Cybertruck, including the doors, powered frunk, tailgate, and surrounding panels.”

The manual instructs users to check the area around the hood for people and objects before opening or closing it, warning that failure to do so may result in damage or serious injury. Keep fingers and other objects clear, monitor the powered panel, and follow the current manual for the specific vehicle and market. Is the reported closing mechanism confirmed?
No. The Gizmodo article separately relays Jeremy Judkins’s account that a Tesla engineer told him resistance could cause the frunk to apply increasing pressure on repeated closing attempts. That is a secondhand account, not an official Tesla statement or an independently verified explanation of what happened to Fay. The report does not establish the mechanism behind the video-described injury.
