The Tesla yoke and Peugeot Hypersquare are not direct equivalents. “Yoke” describes the shape of a driver’s control, while steer-by-wire describes the system that translates that control into front-wheel movement. Peugeot explicitly pairs Hypersquare with steer-by-wire. Lexus provides a current production example of a compact, yoke-like control using steer-by-wire. The available Tesla source does not establish the steering architecture of a Model S or Model X yoke, so it would be inaccurate to label Tesla’s system mechanical or steer-by-wire without a model-specific source.
The short answer
These systems differ on two separate levels:
- Control shape: Tesla’s “yoke” is a steering-control outline with the upper section removed. Peugeot’s Hypersquare is a square-like digital control with circular corner cells and thumb-operated inputs.
- Steering architecture: Peugeot says Hypersquare has no mechanical connection to the front wheels and operates through steer-by-wire. The Tesla documentation available for this comparison is a 2025-plus Model Y owner’s manual covering steering-wheel controls, not a Model S or Model X yoke specification.
That distinction matters. A yoke-shaped control can theoretically be connected mechanically or electronically; its outline alone does not reveal what is behind it. Conversely, steer-by-wire can be packaged with several different control shapes. Lexus demonstrates that point with a production steer-by-wire system and a compact wheel designed to reduce hand-over-hand steering.

Shape and mechanism are different questions
What “yoke” tells you
In automotive usage, “yoke” normally refers to a steering control with a flattened or open upper section rather than a conventional circular rim. The term describes what the driver holds. It does not, by itself, identify the sensors, actuators, steering ratio, backup strategy or physical connection to the road wheels.

What Hypersquare adds
Peugeot describes Hypersquare as a digital control with circular cells at its corners. The driver can maintain a grip while operating vehicle functions with the thumbs. Peugeot also says the control has no mechanical link to the wheels, so the steering command is interpreted electronically and sent to actuators.
Why the Lexus example helps
Lexus describes its production steer-by-wire system as a torque actuator that senses the driver’s input and relays information to a steering-control actuator at the front axle. Its compact control removes the upper and lower curved sections of a conventional wheel, giving it an aircraft-control-like appearance. This shows why “yoke-like” and “steer-by-wire” should not be treated as synonyms: the shape and the architecture are separate design decisions.
How steer-by-wire works
Electronic command instead of a fixed mechanical path
In a conventional steering system, turning the wheel moves a mechanical steering column, rack or related linkage. A steer-by-wire system instead measures the driver’s command and uses electronic signals and powered actuators to turn the front wheels. The steering control and the wheel angle can therefore be separated physically, allowing software to vary the relationship between driver movement and road-wheel movement.
Lexus says its system uses a steering torque actuator to sense the driver’s input and a steering-control actuator on the front axle to execute the command. Lexus also says a backup system intervenes if the steering system experiences an issue. Those are the manufacturer’s architecture and safety descriptions, not results from an independent teardown or comparative road test.
Variable steering ratio
Because software controls the relationship between input and wheel angle, the ratio can change with speed. Lexus says its system is more responsive during low-speed parking, nimble at medium speeds and less sensitive at higher speeds for stability. Peugeot likewise says Hypersquare adapts its steering ratio to vehicle speed.
A variable ratio can reduce the amount of control movement required in a parking maneuver while avoiding an overly nervous response on a motorway. It also means that the same physical movement at the control does not necessarily produce the same wheel angle at every speed. The practical result depends on calibration, vehicle dynamics and driver preference; the cited manufacturer releases do not provide a common test protocol or measured comparison with Tesla.

Backup and fault handling
Lexus specifically states that a backup system intervenes if there is a system issue. That statement indicates that fault tolerance is part of the production design, but it does not describe every failure mode, service procedure or regulatory test. Peugeot’s Hypersquare announcement explains the lack of a mechanical link and the variable ratio, but the announcement does not provide equivalent details about its production backup architecture.

Tesla yoke: what is established and what is not
The available Tesla document
The Tesla source available here is the 2025-plus Model Y Owner’s Manual. It describes Model Y steering-wheel controls. It is not a Model S or Model X yoke specification and does not establish whether a Tesla yoke is mechanically linked, steer-by-wire, or configured identically across model years.
For that reason, a precise article must stop short of assigning Tesla’s yoke a steering architecture based on the control’s appearance. Model, year and market would need to be confirmed before making a technical claim or purchase recommendation.
What you can still compare
You can compare the visible control concepts: a yoke-style outline versus Hypersquare’s square-like digital interface. You can also compare the figures that the respective manufacturers publish for their own systems. You cannot responsibly present Tesla and Peugeot as having been measured under the same conditions, because no common Tesla rotation figure, Tesla ratio specification or independent head-to-head test is established by the available sources.
Peugeot Hypersquare in detail
Interface design
Hypersquare uses a square-like control with circular cells in its corners. Peugeot says those cells let the driver hold the control while pressing thumb-operated vehicle functions. The design aims to keep the hands in a consistent position instead of requiring a driver to reach through the wheel to operate secondary controls.

Peugeot explicitly describes Hypersquare as steer-by-wire. The control has no mechanical connection to the wheels, its ratio changes with speed, and its October 2026 announcement gives a maximum rotation of 170 degrees in each direction.

The 170-degree figure is a manufacturer-stated system specification. It is not a result from a standardized comparison with Tesla’s yoke or Lexus’s control. It should therefore be read as the published maximum rotation for Hypersquare, not as proof that it requires less driver effort in every maneuver.
Production timing
In a Peugeot/Stellantis announcement dated 12 October 2026, Peugeot said a production vehicle would offer the technology from 2027. That announcement does not identify the first production model. Earlier concept announcements used earlier target dates, so the October 2026 statement is the relevant current timing in this comparison. Buyers will need to confirm the eventual model, market, trim and delivery schedule when Peugeot publishes those details.
Lexus’s production steer-by-wire reference point
Control and rotation
Lexus says its compact steer-by-wire control turns up to plus or minus 200 degrees lock-to-lock. The company says the reduced travel almost eliminates hand-over-hand steering. Lexus also says the steering ratio varies with vehicle speed.
This 200-degree figure and Peugeot’s 170-degrees-in-each-direction figure are expressed differently. Lexus reports total lock-to-lock travel as ±200 degrees; Peugeot reports maximum rotation in each direction. They are not measurements taken under a shared protocol and should not be converted into a ranking of maneuverability.
Vehicle availability
Lexus’s 16 February 2026 UK media release says steer-by-wire is standard on the new RZ 550e F Sport and RZ 550e F Sport Takumi. The release comes from Lexus’s UK media site. Trim content, local availability and delivery timing can differ outside the United Kingdom, so the UK announcement should not be treated as a universal specification for every market.

What the different controls could mean on the road
Grip and hand placement
A conventional circular wheel offers a continuous rim that can be caught at many positions during a sharp turn. A yoke or square control removes parts of that rim, which may make the driver’s hand position more deliberate. Hypersquare’s corner cells are intended to let the driver hold the control while using thumb inputs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those are design implications, not measured comfort results. Driver comfort can depend on seating position, steering calibration, road type, the amount of low-speed maneuvering and personal preference.
Parking and tight turns
Both Peugeot and Lexus describe speed-dependent steering ratios. In principle, a more responsive low-speed ratio can reduce the amount of control rotation needed for parking. Lexus specifically links its ±200-degree travel to almost eliminating hand-over-hand steering. Peugeot publishes a 170-degree maximum in each direction for Hypersquare.
There is no independent side-by-side maneuver test in the cited material, so these claims should not be presented as proof that either system completes a parking maneuver faster or more accurately than Tesla’s yoke.
High-speed sensitivity
Lexus says its ratio becomes less sensitive at higher speeds for stability. Peugeot says its ratio adapts to speed but does not provide the same detailed low-, medium- and high-speed description in the cited release. The available Tesla source does not establish a comparable ratio strategy.

Changing the physical connection between the control and the front wheels can change how steering effort and road forces are generated. A steer-by-wire system must create the driver’s steering feel through its actuators and software. The sources here explain architecture and stated benefits, but they do not include instrumented feedback measurements, independent road impressions or a Tesla-versus-Peugeot evaluation. Any claim that one system definitively feels better would go beyond the evidence.

Safety and fault response
Lexus’s stated backup intervention is the only explicitly described fault provision in the cited material. Hypersquare’s announcement establishes the absence of a mechanical link but does not give comparable production-failure detail. Tesla’s Model Y manual does not answer the Model S/X yoke architecture question. Safety conclusions therefore require model-specific technical and regulatory documentation rather than visual comparison.
Availability, dates and buying relevance
Tesla
The cited Tesla manual is for 2025-plus Model Y vehicles and covers steering-wheel controls. It does not establish current Model S or Model X yoke availability, nor does it provide a yoke rotation specification. Check the exact vehicle configuration and model-year documentation before assuming that a photographed Tesla control is available on a particular car.
Lexus
Lexus’s 16 February 2026 UK announcement identifies the RZ 550e F Sport and F Sport Takumi as having steer-by-wire as standard. Because the source is UK-specific, local trim names and equipment must be confirmed in another market.
Peugeot
Peugeot’s 12 October 2026 announcement says production availability starts from 2027, without naming the first production model. Until Peugeot identifies that model and market rollout, Hypersquare should be treated as an announced technology with a stated production target, not as equipment that can be ordered in every Peugeot vehicle.
How to evaluate a yoke or steer-by-wire system
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the brand, model, model year, market and trim. A manual for one vehicle cannot establish the architecture of another.
- Separate shape from architecture. Ask whether the source is describing a yoke, a compact wheel, a square control, steer-by-wire or a conventional mechanical linkage.
- Check the published rotation and ratio information. Note whether a number is total lock-to-lock travel or movement in one direction, and keep the manufacturer and date attached to it.
- Look for fault-handling details. Confirm whether the manufacturer describes redundancy, a backup actuator or another intervention strategy.
- Verify market timing. Concept announcements and production targets do not guarantee that a control is available in your country or on the trim you want.
- Separate claims from tests. A manufacturer’s statement about reduced hand-over-hand steering or improved stability is not an independent measurement.
- Arrange a vehicle-specific drive. If the control is unfamiliar, assess parking, lane changes, tight corners and emergency-like steering inputs in a safe, legal setting rather than relying on the outline alone.
What the evidence can and cannot answer
Questions answered by the cited sources
- Is Hypersquare described as steer-by-wire? Yes. Peugeot says the mechanical connection between the control and wheels is removed.
- Does Lexus offer a production steer-by-wire example? Yes. Lexus describes the system and identifies standard equipment on specified RZ 550e trims in its UK release.
- Are rotation figures published? Yes: Peugeot states 170 degrees in each direction; Lexus states up to ±200 degrees lock-to-lock.
- Does either manufacturer describe speed-dependent steering ratio? Yes. Both Peugeot and Lexus do.
Questions not answered by the cited sources
- Is a particular Tesla Model S or Model X yoke steer-by-wire?
- What is Tesla’s yoke rotation limit or steering ratio?
- Which control produces the best road feel, fastest parking performance or greatest emergency maneuverability?
- How will Hypersquare’s production backup system work in every failure condition?
The absence of those answers here is not proof that no documentation exists anywhere; it means the cited primary sources do not establish them. A technically responsible comparison keeps those boundaries visible.
A note on Peugeot’s earlier concept messaging
In Peugeot’s 5 January 2023 Inception concept announcement, Product Director Jérôme Micheron said: “Customers have high expectations of the electric car. Thanks to the new generation of our “BEV-by-design” platforms dedicated to electric vehicles, we will meet their expectations.” That statement is general concept positioning from 2023. It is not a test result and does not establish current production availability. The later 12 October 2026 announcement is the relevant source for Peugeot’s stated production timing.
Bottom line for shoppers and enthusiasts
Hypersquare is the clearer architectural proposition: Peugeot explicitly combines its square-like digital control with steer-by-wire, speed-adaptive ratio and a stated 170-degree rotation in each direction. Lexus supplies a separate production example showing how steer-by-wire can be paired with a compact, yoke-like control, a ±200-degree lock-to-lock figure and a stated backup system.
