A July 2025 Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report found that Tesla had the highest share of negative views among 19 surveyed electric-vehicle brands: 39%. That makes “most hated” a punchy headline gloss, not a phrase the survey measured. The result describes the report’s 2025 findings; it does not establish Tesla’s ranking today.
What the survey found about Tesla
The Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report (EVIR) said it surveyed more than 8,000 U.S. consumers and weighted responses by education, race, gender, age, income, geography and political preference. Its July 2025 brand-perception table gave Tesla 39% negative views and 26% positive views, for a net positive view score of -13. The report does not disclose a conventional margin of sampling error or a full sampling-frame description in the cited material. Its figures should be read as survey results, not as a precise measurement of every U.S. consumer’s opinion.
How Tesla compared with other EV brands
The comparison below uses the report’s positive/negative perception measure. “Net positive” is the report’s score; it is not a separate measure of trust or hostility.

Negative views and distrust are different measures
The report also asked about trust. In that separate table, 40% said they trusted Tesla overall and 48% said they distrusted it; Tesla’s trust-intensity score was -19. EVIR defines trust intensity as the share who trust a brand “a lot” minus the share who distrust it “a lot.” These trust figures should not be combined with the positive- and negative-view percentages as if they were one “hate” score. Did views of Tesla change?
Asked about the prior six months, 37% of respondents said their view of Tesla EVs had become more negative, including 21% who said “much more negative”; 9% said their view had become more positive. These are respondents’ reports of how their opinions changed. They do not establish what caused that change. EVIR trend findings
Futurism framed the negative sentiment in a political context, but that interpretation is not a causal finding from EVIR’s survey. The survey figures alone do not show that Elon Musk, politics or any particular event caused respondents’ views. Futurism’s coverage

What the robotaxi responses do—and do not—show
EVIR reported that 65% of respondents had not heard about Tesla’s Austin robotaxi demonstration and 3% had heard “a lot.” After respondents were shown a Wall Street Journal description of the event, 50% said they were less interested in using a Tesla robotaxi and 8% said they were more interested. Those were prompted reactions after people read a description, not unprompted opinions or observations of people using the service. They describe responses to that specific survey exercise, not measured real-world demand or safety performance.

Does “most hated” accurately describe the finding?
Not literally. EVIR measured positive and negative views, alongside separate trust questions. Its July 2025 results support the narrower statement that Tesla had the highest negative-view share and the lowest net-positive score among the 19 brands in that report. “Most hated” compresses those distinct survey measures into a more emotional phrase.
The report’s executive dashboard said, “Tesla’s brand reputation slide continues.” That is the report’s characterization of the findings, not a statement that the survey proved why the brand’s reputation changed. EVIR executive dashboard

Is Tesla still the lowest-rated EV brand?
The July 2025 EVIR report establishes Tesla’s position in its own survey at that time. The available figures do not establish whether Tesla remained lowest on a comparable measure as of October 2026. A current ranking would require newer survey data using comparable questions and a comparable group of brands.
