The two measures target cable theft in different ways: one makes cutting more conspicuous; the other is intended to make stolen copper harder to resell. Tesla described the wrap as “just a trial.” The available sources do not establish how widely either measure was deployed or whether it reduced theft.
Why are people cutting Tesla Supercharger cables?
Tesla’s February 17, 2025 filing to the California Energy Commission described vandalism as a long-running problem that had grown over time, but unevenly distributed. Tesla said most incidents were one-off events, while a small but increasing number involved repeat incidents at the same site or in concentrated areas. It identified Seattle and Houston as notable hot spots, and said California had the largest incident count, likely because it had more chargers. Tesla also said incidents had affected Superchargers in at least 18 states over several years. These are statements in a dated company filing, not a current count of affected locations.
At operating sites, Tesla said connectors—including cut cables and stolen adapters—were the most common targets. At construction sites, breakers and other electrical equipment were more often targeted. The company said cable cutting might be motivated by copper resale or simply by a desire to cause damage, and that motives were difficult to establish case by case.
Tesla said vandalism had not broadly affected network reliability at the time of its filing. It cited 24/7 station monitoring and rapid service response, while noting that it did not separately track average repair time for vandalism. The filing stated that Tesla made police reports in suspected cases and could provide available camera footage; the company said, to its knowledge, those reports had not successfully identified California vandals.

What is Tesla doing to stop Supercharger cable theft?
Blue dye wrap: make cutting more conspicuous
Futurism reported on February 14, 2025, that Tesla appeared to be trialing CatStrap’s DyeDefender wrap at a new Supercharger site in Seattle. The wrap is described as a pressurized stainless-steel sleeve that releases blue dye when cut. The intended deterrent is visibility: dye could make a theft attempt more obvious and potentially help identify a suspect. The report did not establish how many sites received the wrap or document its long-term effectiveness.
“Property of Tesla” engraving: discourage copper resale
Tesla charging executive Max de Zegher told Futurism that Supercharger cables would also have “Property of Tesla” engraved on them at Tesla’s Buffalo, New York, factory. Engraving is distinct from the dye wrap: it marks the conductor material to signal ownership and encourage recycling companies to reject it and notify Tesla. The report did not independently verify how recyclers respond to the marking.

The product will work with the original adapter included in your Tesla vehicle and other after market adapters such as the Lectron Tesla to J1772 adapter.
- Installation - The charger lock can be easily installed by inserting to the adapter until it snaps into place and you hear a "click". It is now ready to charge! Easily remove the lock from your adapter or store as attached for easy use on your next charge.
- Application - Use the J1772 charger adapter lock at your favorite charging station such as ChargePoint, SemaConnect, and others. Charge your Tesla with the peace of mind, knowing that it cannot be disconnected from your vehicle.
- Technology: The Tesla ring lock safely secures the charging adapter by preventing the extraction mechanism of the charger until you have unlocked your charging port. Further the lock includes features to adapt to different charging port styles and prevent any manipulation of the lock, as well as to prevent disconnecting the charger.
Is the countermeasure installed across the network?
No confirmed network-wide rollout is established by the available reporting. De Zegher called the wrap “just a trial,” and Futurism said it was unclear whether it had been installed at other sites or whether Tesla had made an extended deal with CatStrap. The sources also do not establish a current deployment footprint or a measured reduction in cable theft. Tesla’s stated goal in its CEC filing was to address the problem with solutions that are “driver-centric, cost-effective, practical, and scalable.”
Do the blue dye wrap and cable engraving work?
The available sources explain the intended mechanisms, not a measured result. Dye is meant to make cutting conspicuous; engraving is intended to make copper easier to identify as stolen property and less attractive to resellers. No cited source provides an independent effectiveness comparison or a Tesla-specific post-trial theft-reduction figure, so neither measure can be ranked against the other on demonstrated results.

CatStrap also sells an EV Cable Shield for charging infrastructure, with DyeDefender listed as an optional add-on. The company describes the shield as a steel-based physical barrier with fastening hardware. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independently validated performance findings, and the sources do not show that Tesla adopted CatStrap’s retail EV Cable Shield as a network-wide solution. It is infrastructure security equipment for charging operators, not an accessory for drivers.
How widespread is charging-cable theft beyond Tesla?
Cable theft has affected more than one charging network, but figures from other operators should not be mistaken for Tesla statistics. The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Electrify America had recorded 129 cable cuts through May that year—four more than in all of 2023. Its reporting described incidents in multiple places, including Seattle and Houston, and noted that losing cords can leave drivers without usable charging stalls. The article also reported that replacement and downtime costs to operators can substantially exceed the scrap value sought by thieves.

How do I report a broken Tesla Supercharger?
- Use another stall at the site if one is available and appears to be working.
- Open the Tesla app and select the charging location.
- Tap “Report an Issue,” choose a category, and include a photo if you can do so safely. Tesla’s support page reviewed for this article says the feature requires app version 4.39.0 or later; check the live support page for current instructions.
Do not touch, open, inspect internally, or modify damaged charging equipment. Tesla’s support terms prohibit vandalism and opening or modifying charging equipment. Tesla says Supercharger stations are monitored and serviced by its technicians.
