Tesla’s Semi is the longer-range proposition on published U.S. figures, while Volvo’s VNR Electric is offered in more route-specific configurations for local and regional distribution. Tesla lists estimated ranges of 325 miles (Standard Range) and 500 miles (Long Range), both at 1.7 kWh per mile under specified test conditions. Volvo lists up to 275 miles for enhanced six-battery tractor configurations, plus shorter-range tractor and straight-truck versions. The right choice depends on the route, payload after tare weight, charging access, delivery timing and a quote-based total-cost calculation.
What the published specifications actually show
This is a U.S.-market comparison based on current manufacturer pages and a dated deployment report. Tesla’s current Semi page says deliveries start in 2026, so its advertised range and charging performance should be treated as estimates and product claims rather than proof of broad fleet availability or independently validated real-world results. Volvo’s VNR Electric range covers several tractor and straight-truck configurations, and Volvo explicitly positions the family for local and regional distribution.

| Truck and configuration | Published range | Battery or energy figure | Published weight rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Semi Standard Range | 325 miles estimated | 1.7 kWh/mile | 82,000 lb gross combination weight (GCW); curb weight below 20,000 lb |
| Tesla Semi Long Range | 500 miles estimated | 1.7 kWh/mile | 82,000 lb GCW; 23,000 lb curb weight |
| Volvo VNR Electric 6×2 or 6×4 tractor, six batteries | Up to 275 miles | 565 kWh total; 452 kWh usable | Up to 82,000 lb GCW for specified applications |
| Volvo VNR Electric 4×2 tractor | Up to 175 miles | Four-battery system listed at 375 kWh | 66,000 lb GCW |
| Volvo VNR Electric 4×2 straight truck | Up to 230 miles | Configuration-dependent | GVW varies by specification |
| Volvo VNR Electric 6×4 straight truck | Up to 190 miles | Configuration-dependent | GVW varies by specification |
These are not like-for-like range tests. Tesla’s numbers are tied to a stated highway test setup; Volvo’s figures vary by axle layout, body style and battery count. A 230-mile straight-truck figure should not be compared with a 275-mile tractor figure as though the vehicles perform the same job.

Tesla Semi range and energy use
Standard Range and Long Range figures
Tesla lists 325 miles for the Standard Range Semi and 500 miles for the Long Range Semi. Both are listed at 1.7 kWh per mile. On those figures, the Long Range version offers 175 additional advertised miles, but the number is an estimate rather than a guaranteed route distance.
#1 Best Overall
Conditions behind Tesla’s estimate
Tesla states that its range and energy estimates use an 82,000-pound gross combination weight, 55-mph speed, 20°C ambient temperature, flat ground, a tandem-axle aerodynamic kit and a CARB-compliant dry-van trailer. A fleet operating in winter, on grades, at higher speeds, with a different trailer or at a different gross weight should expect a different result. The 1.7-kWh-per-mile figure should therefore be used as a planning input, not a promise.
What the range means operationally
The 500-mile estimate could reduce charging stops on a long regional or line-haul schedule if the truck, trailer, payload and charging network match Tesla’s assumptions. It does not by itself establish that a truck can complete a specific 500-mile route with a mandated reserve, adverse weather allowance, detours and legally required rest or charging windows. Fleets should model a usable operating buffer rather than dispatching to the published maximum.
Volvo VNR Electric range and configurations
Six-battery tractors
Volvo lists up to 275 miles for six-battery 6×2 and 6×4 tractor configurations. The enhanced system has 565 kWh of total battery capacity and 452 kWh of usable energy. Volvo’s product guide lists charging at up to 250 kW and an 80-percent charge in 90 minutes for this setup.
Four-battery tractor
The 4×2 tractor is listed at up to 175 miles and 66,000 pounds GCW. Its four-battery system is listed at 375 kWh, and Volvo lists 60 minutes to 80 percent with a 250-kW charger. This configuration may fit shorter distribution loops where lower weight, lower infrastructure demand or a lower combination rating matters more than maximum range.
Straight-truck versions
Volvo lists up to 230 miles for a 4×2 straight truck and up to 190 miles for a 6×4 straight truck. These figures belong to different vehicle forms and should be matched to the actual body, payload and route. A straight truck’s range cannot be used to infer the range of a tractor pulling a loaded semitrailer.

Volvo says its enhanced VNR Electric models provide “up to 85% improvement in range, faster charging, and a wider range of configurations.” The percentage is Volvo’s corporate product statement; it is not an independent comparison with the Tesla Semi.
Payload: why GCW does not answer “how much can it carry?”
Gross combination weight is the legal or engineered total for the tractor, trailer, cargo, fluids, occupants and equipment. It is not net cargo payload. Subtracting a published curb weight from GCW also does not produce a final payload number unless the trailer tare, operating equipment, axle limits and route rules are known.

Tesla lists 82,000 pounds GCW for both Semi trims, a curb weight below 20,000 pounds for Standard Range and 23,000 pounds for Long Range. The Long Range truck’s higher listed curb weight consumes more of the combination allowance before cargo is loaded. Tesla’s page does not turn those figures into a guaranteed payload because trailer tare, fifth-wheel equipment, driver, accessories and axle distribution still matter.
Volvo’s ratings
Volvo lists up to 82,000 pounds GCW for specified six-battery 6×2 and 6×4 tractor applications and 66,000 pounds GCW for the 4×2 tractor. It gives different GVW ratings for straight trucks. The retrieved Volvo specifications do not provide matching curb weights for the same tractor configurations, so a side-by-side payload winner cannot be established.
The fleet calculation to request
- Obtain the exact tractor build sheet, including battery count, axle layout, wheelbase, fifth-wheel position and options.
- Record certified tractor tare weight as delivered, not a generic model estimate.
- Add the trailer’s actual tare, refrigeration or liftgate equipment, driver allowance and normal operating gear.
- Check steer, drive and trailer-axle limits for the jurisdictions and routes served.
- Subtract those weights from the applicable GCW or GVW and test the result against the cargo density and cube your business actually hauls.
Both manufacturers publish an 82,000-pound combination rating for some tractor variants. That establishes a common rating, not equal cargo capacity.

Why the headline times are not directly comparable
Tesla describes a percentage of range recovered in 30 minutes. Volvo describes time to reach 80 percent state of charge. They use different starting points, endpoints, battery sizes and operating assumptions. A 30-minute Tesla stop is not equivalent to a 90-minute Volvo 80-percent charge, and neither number tells you the dwell time at your depot without a site-specific power study.

A fleet considering the Semi should confirm where Megachargers will be available when trucks enter service, whether the route allows access without a detour, and whether the utility can deliver the required power. A 1.2-MW peak capability can affect transformer sizing, interconnection lead time, demand charges, switchgear, permitting and on-site energy management. Tesla’s current page says deliveries start in 2026; commissioning dates and access rules for each charging location should be confirmed in writing.
Planning a Volvo CCS1 depot
A 250-kW CCS1 installation still requires a utility assessment, charger placement for the tractor and trailer, cable reach, traffic flow, switchgear, software, maintenance access and a charging schedule. The six-battery truck’s 90-minute 80-percent interval can fit a planned break or loading window, but only if the truck arrives with the expected state of charge and the site supplies its rated power. Volvo’s four-battery 60-minute figure applies to that configuration, not to every VNR Electric.
Availability, service and uptime
Tesla delivery status
Tesla’s current U.S. product page says Semi deliveries start in 2026. That is a future-start statement, not evidence that a fleet can immediately order, receive and deploy any desired volume. Procurement teams should obtain a written delivery schedule, configuration availability, warranty terms, parts support and charging responsibilities before treating the Semi as an executable replacement plan.
Volvo support model
Volvo’s product guide says the VNR Electric includes a Gold Contract covering maintenance, towing, uptime services and major components including batteries, powertrain and driveline. The retrieved material does not state the contract price, exclusions, response-time guarantees or how its cost compares with Tesla’s support terms. Compare the included scope, labor limits, consumables, roadside coverage, battery warranty and planned downtime rather than using “low maintenance” as a complete cost conclusion.

Operating costs: what can and cannot be claimed
No current, matched purchase prices or independently validated Tesla-versus-Volvo operating cost per mile are established here. Tesla says electricity typically costs less than diesel and that the Semi needs less maintenance, but it does not publish a region-specific electricity tariff, diesel price, purchase price, maintenance schedule or matched total-cost calculation on the cited page. Those statements are manufacturer claims, not a numeric savings guarantee.
Volvo’s Gold Contract may make maintenance spending more predictable, but the contract’s price and exclusions must be included in the quote. A truck with a lower energy bill can still have a higher total cost if charging infrastructure, demand charges, financing, payload loss, dwell time or insurance outweigh the fuel savings.
Use a route-specific total-cost model
A September 2021 NREL total-cost-of-ownership study summarized by the U.S. Department of Energy included vehicle purchase price, fuel, operating and maintenance costs, driver wages and benefits, insurance, tires, permits, tolls, charging or refueling dwell time and lost payload capacity. Its conclusion that battery-electric trucks may fit shorter ranges or routes where dwell time is less important is a framework for selecting inputs, not a current Tesla Semi-versus-VNR quotation.
For each candidate truck, calculate the following with prices dated and tied to your operating region:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Electricity consumed on the actual route, including time-of-use rates, demand charges, taxes and losses between the utility meter and vehicle.
- Diesel consumption and the baseline diesel price for the same duty cycle.
- Annual miles, payload, terrain, temperature, traffic, stop frequency and reserve policy.
- Charger, transformer, switchgear, civil work, software, maintenance and utility-connection costs.
- Purchase price, financing, grants or tax incentives, and any battery or charging equipment included in the quote.
- Planned charging dwell and its effect on driver utilization, appointment windows, overtime and spare-vehicle requirements.
- Maintenance, tires, insurance, permits, tolls, roadside support and service-contract coverage.
- Residual value, battery warranty, expected availability and the cost of a truck being unavailable.
- Any cargo reduction caused by tractor or battery weight, expressed as lost revenue or an extra trip rather than ignored.
Illustrative break-even method
- Measure energy use from comparable routes or a conservative engineering estimate; do not assume Tesla’s 1.7 kWh per mile applies to Volvo or to a different trailer and speed.
- Multiply energy use by the delivered electricity cost, including demand and infrastructure allocation.
- Calculate the diesel truck’s fuel cost from measured miles per gallon and the same route’s diesel price.
- Add annualized capital, maintenance, insurance, tires, labor, charging dwell and payload effects.
- Divide total annual cost by productive miles or loaded miles, and show sensitivity for electricity price, diesel price, annual mileage and dwell time.
The output should be a range of outcomes, not a single universal “cheapest” truck.

Which truck fits which duty cycle?
Longer routes with dependable high-power charging
The Tesla Semi’s 500-mile advertised Long Range figure and 1.2-MW charging claim make it the stronger published proposition for fleets seeking fewer en-route stops. That advantage matters only when the truck is available on the required schedule, the route can reach Megacharger sites, payload remains acceptable and actual conditions do not erode the reserve.
Local and regional distribution with planned depot returns
The VNR Electric’s multiple configurations can be matched to shorter loops, frequent stops and return-to-base charging. A six-battery tractor offers up to 275 miles, while the 4×2 tractor is listed at up to 175 miles and 66,000 pounds GCW. Straight-truck options may fit delivery bodies that do not require a semitrailer. Volvo’s own positioning is local and regional distribution with planned routes and frequent stops.
Port drayage and predictable charging windows
A route that returns to a depot or port at known times can make a 60- or 90-minute charging window manageable, especially when trucks can charge to 80 percent during the day and finish overnight. The six-battery VNR’s 275-mile maximum is still a configuration-specific figure; port queues, trailer weight, weather and idle time must be included in dispatch planning.
What the Amazon deployment demonstrates—and what it does not
Axios reported on May 7, 2024, that Amazon was deploying nearly 50 Volvo VNR Electric trucks across Southern California. The report described operations at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach for drayage and movements between Amazon sites. It said Forum Mobility handled port charging, Amazon installed more than 45 DC fast chargers at 11 area sites for its heavy-duty electric fleet, and Adam Baker, Amazon’s vice president of North America and Europe transportation and global mile, said the trucks were expected to charge to 80 percent during the day and top up to 100 percent overnight.
Axios also reported an expectation of more than 1 million emissions-free miles annually and quoted Baker saying, “When we were looking through different providers, Volvo came to the top for us.” He described the truck as having “phenomenal” ergonomics and being easier on drivers’ knees. Those comments are operator statements about Amazon’s Southern California deployment, not an independent efficiency test or proof that every regional route suits the VNR Electric. The report describes 2024 expectations and should not be read as a statement of 2026 fleet status.
A practical selection process for a fleet
- Define the route. Record loaded and empty miles, grades, speed, stops, temperatures, trailer type, legal weight, appointment windows and overnight parking.
- Define the payload. Use actual tractor and trailer tare weights, axle limits and cargo density. Reject any comparison based only on GCW.
- Choose the configuration. Compare Tesla Standard Range and Long Range with the specific Volvo 4×2, 6×2, 6×4 or straight-truck build that can perform the work.
- Map charging. Identify depot and en-route sites, connector compatibility, access hours, detours, queue risk, power capacity and utility-interconnection dates.
- Model a reserve. Include weather, traffic, degradation, detours and a minimum state-of-charge policy instead of dispatching to the advertised maximum.
- Request comparable quotes. Require vehicle price, delivery timing, warranty, service scope, charger scope, software fees, financing and residual assumptions in the same currency and date.
- Test the schedule. Simulate charging dwell, loading delays, driver hours, spare trucks and missed appointments under normal and bad-day conditions.
- Run sensitivity cases. Change electricity and diesel prices, annual mileage, payload, demand charges and downtime to find what actually drives the decision.
- Pilot before scaling. Validate energy use, charging reliability, route completion, payload and driver workflow on representative routes before ordering a large fleet.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling Tesla’s 325- or 500-mile figures guaranteed range instead of estimates under a defined test setup.
- Comparing Volvo’s 275-mile tractor figure with a straight-truck range without identifying the body style.
- Subtracting Tesla curb weight from 82,000 pounds and calling the result payload while ignoring trailer tare and axle limits.
- Treating Tesla’s 60-percent-in-30-minutes statement as equivalent to Volvo’s 80-percent charge time.
- Assuming a 1.2-MW or 250-kW charger will deliver full power continuously without checking the site, battery state and utility connection.
- Using a generic electricity or diesel price without stating geography, date, demand charges and taxes.
- Turning manufacturer claims about lower energy or maintenance costs into an unsupported cost-per-mile winner.
- Assuming Amazon’s Southern California deployment proves performance on a different climate, payload or route.
- Ignoring delivery timing, service-contract exclusions, charger downtime and residual value.
Bottom-line decision
Choose the Tesla Semi when its published long-range capability, high-power charging plan and 2026 delivery path align with a route that needs fewer stops and can support the required infrastructure. Choose a Volvo VNR Electric configuration when a defined local or regional route, return-to-base charging, body style and service package fit the operation. Before signing either order, obtain matched tare weights and quotes, verify charging access and utility capacity, and calculate total cost using the fleet’s actual miles, payload, dwell time and energy prices.
