Tesla Semi charging: Megacharger speed, pricing, compatibility and route planning

Tesla’s Megacharger headline is up to 1.2 MW and up to 60% charge in 30 minutes. Here is how real charging speed, site pricing, billing, compatibility and public-site availability work.

Tesla says a Megacharger can deliver up to 1.2 MW and add up to 60% of a Tesla Semi’s battery charge in 30 minutes. That is a maximum company claim, not a guaranteed result for every stop: charging power changes with battery level, battery temperature and whether another truck is using the same charger. Tesla does not publish one universal price; the truck touchscreen or Tesla app shows the applicable site rate before you plug in, and that rate is locked for the session.

What the 30-minute Megacharging claim actually means

The headline describes the best available charging capability, not a fixed promise for a particular state-of-charge window. A truck arriving with a different battery level, a cold or hot battery, or a shared Megacharger can see a different power curve. Tesla lists those three factors explicitly in its Semi Charging support guidance.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Megacharger power is also not constant from the first second to the last. Battery-management controls normally taper power as the pack fills, so the time to add a chosen percentage depends on where charging starts and where the driver stops. Tesla’s figure should therefore be used as an upper-bound planning reference rather than converted into a guaranteed minutes-per-percent formula.

The Semi touchscreen reports estimated minutes remaining during a session. Treat that estimate as the most useful live indicator because it reflects the truck’s current battery condition and charger status, whereas a brochure maximum does not.

Why two Semis can charge at different speeds

Battery level

Charging behavior changes across the battery’s state-of-charge range. A low battery may accept power differently from a nearly full one, and the vehicle can reduce power near the charge limit. If a route only requires a partial top-up, ending earlier can avoid the slowest portion of the curve.

Battery temperature

Temperature affects how aggressively the battery can accept energy. A pack that is very cold or very hot may charge more slowly while the truck protects the cells. Allowing the vehicle to condition the battery before arrival can help, but the exact process and timing depend on the truck’s software and operating conditions.

Shared Megacharger equipment

Tesla says the presence of another truck at the same Megacharger can affect the rate. Two vehicles should not be assumed to receive the site’s full advertised output simultaneously. Check the touchscreen estimate after plugging in instead of relying on an empty-site expectation.

Charge target and departure plan

The useful question is not “How long does a Semi take?” but “How much energy do I need for the next leg?” Set a practical charge limit for the route, account for weather and payload, and leave once the truck has the required buffer. Charging to the highest possible level can consume disproportionate time near the top of the battery.

How Megacharging is priced

Tesla does not state a single network-wide Megacharging tariff. Prices are site-specific and can vary by time of day or by demand. The current rate appears when you select a Megacharger on the Semi’s map or in the Tesla app. Tesla says the price is fixed when the vehicle plugs in, so it does not change halfway through an active session.

Pricing element What Tesla says What a driver should do
Site rate Varies by location; no universal published price Open the selected site in the truck map or Tesla app before departure
Time-of-use schedule Some locations charge more during peak hours than off-peak hours Compare the displayed schedule with your planned arrival
Demand-based pricing Some locations vary prices according to demand and stall availability Recheck the live site information if your timing changes
Session price Set at plug-in and unchanged during that session Confirm the rate before connecting
Idle charging fee Begins after charging finishes; the first five minutes are waived Move the truck promptly; Tesla’s reviewed support page does not state the fee amount

Because no standard rate or fee amount is published in the cited support material, a per-kilowatt-hour cost, per-mile figure or typical session total would be speculation. The only reliable price for a trip is the one shown for the selected site at the time you connect.

Who receives the bill?

Megacharging is designed around fleet accounts rather than payment at the stall. The driver does not pay directly at the charger. Tesla bills the fleet’s Tesla for Business account monthly; Tesla says that account can be paid by ACH or SEPA.

Fleet managers should make sure each truck is associated with the correct business account before dispatch. A driver who sees a charger but cannot start a session should have the fleet administrator verify account access, vehicle assignment and any internal spending controls.

How to check a site’s live price and availability

  1. On the Semi touchscreen, open the vehicle map and select a Megacharger pin. In the Tesla app, open the map and select the same type of site.
  2. Review the address, distance and available stalls shown in the site details.
  3. Read the displayed price and any peak, off-peak or demand-based conditions before routing the truck.
  4. Check the listed operating hours. Tesla says most sites are open 24 hours; any restricted hours appear in the site information.
  5. Plan the arrival and charge target, then confirm the rate again immediately before plugging in if conditions have changed.
  6. After connecting, watch the Semi’s estimated minutes remaining and revise the departure time if the live estimate differs materially from the plan.

Reservations are not supported, so a map showing an open stall is a current availability indication rather than a guaranteed booking. A busy site can change between route planning and arrival.

Can a Semi use a Supercharger or Wall Connector?

No. Tesla’s Semi charging support page says passenger-vehicle Superchargers and Wall Connectors are not compatible with the Semi. Tesla also states that Megacharger sites currently support Tesla Semi trucks only. Drivers should not assume that a cable, adapter or general-purpose charging accessory can make an incompatible site usable.

This restriction matters during contingency planning. A route that loses access to its intended Megacharger cannot automatically be rescued by diverting to an ordinary Tesla car-charging location. Dispatchers need a Semi-compatible site in the route plan and a practical reserve for unexpected detours.

Where public Megachargers are available

Pilot and Tesla announced the first public site at Pilot #1390 in Ellabell, Georgia, with six heavy-duty charging stalls. The same 2026 announcement said 12 additional heavy-duty locations were under construction and identified three as near completion: Tulare, California; Fort Stockton, Texas; and North Las Vegas, Nevada. Those were announcement-time construction statuses, not a guaranteed current count or opening schedule.

Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q separately said public Megacharger deployment had begun in preparation for Semi production. Tesla’s Semi product page says deliveries start in 2026; that is Tesla’s stated timing, not an independent forecast.

For a current route, use Tesla’s live map rather than relying on the announcement list. The map can show the latest site status, hours and stall availability, while the truck’s navigation can account for distance and the planned stop.

How to compare two Megacharging stops

A lower displayed price is not automatically the better stop. Compare the complete operating picture for the time your truck will arrive.

Decision factor Questions to answer
Displayed price What rate is shown for each site at the planned plug-in time?
Peak or demand conditions Will arrival fall in a high-price period, and can the schedule change before departure?
Stall availability How many compatible stalls are open now, and is another truck likely to share the equipment?
Route position Does the stop fit the next leg without an inefficient detour?
Hours Is the site open throughout the planned arrival window?
Truck condition What battery temperature, starting charge and target charge are expected?
Operational buffer What reserve is needed for traffic, weather, payload or a wait for a stall?

Record the displayed rate and estimated completion time in the dispatch plan. Since Tesla fixes the price at plug-in but does not support reservations, the operational risk is usually availability and timing rather than a mid-session tariff change.

What happens if charging is slower than expected?

The estimate increases immediately after plug-in

Allow a short period for the truck to establish its charging conditions, then check the battery temperature, starting charge and whether another truck is using the Megacharger. Those are the variables Tesla identifies as affecting rate. If the estimate remains too long, lower the intended charge target only if the route reserve remains safe, or select another compatible stop shown on the live map.

The site appears full

Because reservations are unavailable, a full site requires waiting or rerouting. Use the map’s stall information and the truck’s remaining range to decide whether to hold, divert or reduce the planned charge at a later stop. Do not divert to a Supercharger or Wall Connector; Tesla says those are incompatible with Semi.

The truck remains connected after completion

Tesla says idle fees accrue once charging finishes, with the first five minutes waived. Move the truck within that grace period when possible. The cited support material does not provide a universal fee amount, so consult the live account or site information for the applicable charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The displayed price differs from a dispatch estimate

Use the rate shown at the selected site and locked at plug-in as the authoritative session price. A planning spreadsheet based on another location, another time period or an old screenshot can be wrong, especially where demand-based pricing is used.

What this means for fleet planning

Megacharging economics cannot be reduced to a single energy price until a fleet selects actual sites and arrival windows. Build route plans around live site data, then capture the truck’s observed charge time and energy use in the fleet’s own records. That operational history can improve future schedules without treating Tesla’s maximum specification as a fleet-average result.

Depot operators should separately evaluate on-site charging needs, vehicle dwell time, electrical service and business-account administration. Tesla markets business-focused charging hardware and has begun public Megacharger deployments, but the cited sources do not establish a universal hardware purchase price, installation cost or independent operating-cost benchmark.

Bottom line for a Semi driver

Use Tesla’s maximum charging statement to understand what the Megacharger system is designed to deliver, not to promise an identical stop every time. Before departure, select a Semi-compatible site, read its live price and stall status, check hours, and set a charge target tied to the next leg. At the stall, follow the truck’s estimated minutes remaining, move promptly after charging completes, and let the fleet’s Tesla for Business account handle billing.
