Organizers said they repeated the drive-by trial eight times. The result is a serious warning about what the demonstration showed—but it is not a regulator-run certification or proof of how every Tesla or every FSD version performs.
What happened in the Tesla school-bus demonstration?
The Dawn Project organized the Austin event with Tesla Takedown and ResistAustin. Engadget reported on June 15, 2025, that a Tesla passed a stopped school bus displaying flashing lights and stop signs, then struck child-sized mannequins. Engadget said organizers repeated the drive-by trial eight times. Engadget’s report describes the event and its organizers.
The Register’s May 30 account identified the vehicle’s software as Full Self-Driving (Supervised) version 13.2.9. It reported that the vehicle identified the pedestrian mannequin but did not stop after impact. That is the publication’s description of the staged video, not an independently audited system log. The Register’s report calls the demonstration staged.
What does the test show—and what can’t it prove?
The demonstration documented a reported failure in a specific setup: a Model Y using FSD (Supervised) encountered a stopped, marked school bus and mannequins, and the vehicle struck the dummies. Repeating the trial eight times, as Engadget reported, makes the organizers’ result more than a single-run account; it does not turn the event into a representative safety rate.

- Hot Wheels Tesla Model Y, HW Green Speed 1/10 [Gray] 37/250
The available reporting does not establish the full protocol, including setup distances, vehicle speeds, driver interventions, complete run records, or raw telemetry. Nor does it report independent regulator validation. Without that information, the demonstration cannot establish how often the behavior occurs in everyday driving, whether it generalizes to other vehicles or software versions, or what a regulator would conclude.
Why “Supervised” matters
Tesla calls the feature “Full Self-Driving (Supervised).” Engadget notes that it requires a fully attentive driver and uses escalating warnings that require driver response. The Austin event therefore concerned a driver-assistance system under supervision, not a fully driverless Robotaxi trial. The reported mannequin impact remains consequential, but the test should not be described as a test of an unattended car.

Keep the other Dawn Project tests separate
The Dawn Project issued findings about its Tesla FSD version 13 tests in February 2025. Those are the advocacy group’s claims about a separate set of tests, not the same Austin demonstration covered in May and June. Its release headline makes claims about school buses and children; those claims should be attributed to the organization rather than treated as an independent finding. The February release identifies the group’s version 13 testing.
The Dawn Project also has a page about earlier California tests involving child mannequins and stopped-school-bus scenarios. Its displayed date is August 29, 2022, while its body refers to tests conducted in October 2022, so that page does not provide a reliable basis for resolving the chronology. It describes a different campaign from the Austin event. The Dawn Project’s page covers those earlier tests.

How to read the organizers’ claims
The Dawn Project is openly critical of Tesla’s driver-assistance software and organized the Austin demonstration with Tesla Takedown and ResistAustin. That context is relevant when weighing the organizers’ interpretation. It does not, by itself, establish that the visible collision did or did not occur; the strongest supported account is the specific event described by reporting, with its protocol and independent validation limits kept in view.
The Register reported that Tesla had no comment at the time of its May 30, 2025 article. The cited reports do not establish whether Tesla later issued a response specific to this demonstration.
