Tesla has canceled its planned Cybertruck Range Extender and told customers who paid a deposit that the money would be refunded in full to the original payment method. The reported cancellation email does not give a refund timetable, and the reports reviewed do not establish that every customer has already received their money.
What Tesla told deposit holders
Drive Tesla reported on May 7, 2025, that Tesla emailed customers who had placed deposits. The email said: “We are no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck. As a result, we will be refunding your deposit in full. The amount will be returned to the original payment method used for the transaction.” Drive Tesla reproduced the message; Tesla Oracle published the same wording in a separate May 19, 2025 report.

The cancellation email is available in contemporaneous media reports, not as a public Tesla announcement in the sources reviewed. It promises a full refund to the payment method used for the deposit, but neither report specifies when the refund should arrive.
What the Range Extender was supposed to do
The planned accessory was a battery pack mounted in the Cybertruck’s bed to increase driving range. Drive Tesla described it as roughly toolbox-sized and reported that it would take up about one-third of the bed, trading cargo space for additional range.
#1 Best Overall
The same report recounted changing pre-cancellation estimates: an earlier figure of more than 470 miles (756 km) and a later estimate of more than 445 miles (716 km) for a Cybertruck equipped with the pack. These were reported projections for a product that did not reach sale, not verified performance figures. Drive Tesla also reported an estimated price of US$16,000 or C$22,000; neither figure was a confirmed final retail price.
Why did Tesla cancel it?
The email reproduced in the reports does not explain Tesla’s decision. Tesla Oracle speculated that order volume could have played a role, but did not establish that as Tesla’s reason. The apparent range-versus-bed-space compromise describes the proposed design, not a stated explanation for the cancellation.

What to do if your deposit has not been returned
The reported promise is to return the deposit in full to the original payment method. Because the reports provide no processing window, there is no supported date by which a customer should expect the funds. If you are still waiting, check the Tesla account associated with the order or contact Tesla customer support. Tesla’s general upgrades refund policy concerns other purchases and does not set a specific deadline or process for this canceled deposit.

Tesla’s current Cybertruck FAQ covers vehicle features, Powershare and accessories but does not list the Range Extender as an available item. The page describes Powershare outlets and charging accessories, but these are not bed-mounted range-extension batteries. The sources reviewed establish no compatible replacement product.
