On March 11, 2025, about 94% of people participating in a non-representative T-Online poll chose “Auf gar keinen Fall” (“Absolutely not”) in response to “Würden Sie noch einen Tesla kaufen?” (“Would you still buy a Tesla?”). That result was not a representative measure of German opinion, and the poll’s results later shifted sharply before T-Online stopped it.
What did the T-Online poll actually find?
The 94% figure described the poll’s participating users on March 11, 2025—not 94% of Germans. T-Online explicitly identified the poll as non-representative, so its self-selected online votes cannot be treated as a population estimate.
At that point, about 94% had chosen “Auf gar keinen Fall,” while about 3% chose “Ja, kein Problem” (“Yes, no problem”). The results did not remain stable: by March 18, when the poll had recorded 467,500 votes, they had shifted to about 70% saying they would buy a Tesla and 29.2% saying they would not. T-Online reported the changing results and its decision to stop the poll.
Why did T-Online stop the poll?
T-Online said an internal review found 253,000 votes associated with two IP addresses in the United States. The poll link had also been shared widely on X and other social networks. The outlet said the origin of the votes was unclear and manipulation was possible; it stopped the poll and removed it from related articles.

Those details support describing the poll as affected by suspected manipulation or irregular voting. T-Online did not publicly identify who was behind the votes or establish their motive.
What does a later survey say about Tesla buying intentions?
A separate survey by the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW), conducted online in summer 2025 and reported in 2026, offers a more representative view of stated purchase intentions. Nearly 60% of respondents ruled out buying a Tesla entirely, another 16% were inclined against it, and around 13% said they could imagine buying one. In total, around three-quarters could not imagine buying a Tesla.

This was a different survey with a different method and question context; it does not validate T-Online’s earlier 94% result. The IW press release says 5,392 adults in Germany were surveyed online from June 25 to July 3, 2025, using the Bilendi & respondi access panel, with quotas for income, state of residence, and sex and age. The institute’s study page reports different sample counts: 5,425 respondents, a valid net sample of 5,293, and a random subsample of 1,781 used for much of the report. These counts come from separate IW descriptions and should not be combined as if they were one figure.
Are Tesla sales falling in Germany?
Yes. Registration data is separate from survey responses about what people might buy. IW reports, using German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) figures, that 19,390 new Teslas were registered in Germany in 2025, 48% fewer than in 2024. The Model Y, Germany’s top-selling electric-vehicle model in 2024, ranked 12th in 2025. T-Online’s 2026 account summarizes the registration figures.

Did Elon Musk’s politics cause the decline?
The IW analysis reports a strong association between political preferences and intentions to buy electric vehicles and Teslas. Its authors suggest that Musk’s political role may have alienated potential customers; Matthias Diermeier said, “Elon Musk hat sich auf dem europäischen Markt seine Zielgruppe verprellt” (“Elon Musk has alienated his target group in the European market”).
An association in a survey does not establish that Musk’s politics caused Tesla’s registration decline, let alone that it was the sole cause. The available findings describe purchase intentions and registrations, but do not isolate the effect of politics from other market or commercial factors. IW’s press release presents the survey’s interpretation.
